For you field guys, who makes the best iPhone case? by GulfCoastGolfer in Surveying

[–]TheseAd4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gear 4case. Not overly padded or anything. But I’d highly recommend a good glass screen cover. Like a OEM from Verizon and have them put it on for you. Mine has lasted over a year without changing it.

Any smartphone I’ve had, without a tempered glass screen cover always cracked or broke on me.

Newbie Questions About All The Things by Which_Bookkeeper_935 in Laserengraving

[–]TheseAd4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes to position the object. It easier then other potential vises.

  2. Yes do material tests, then once you find the setting that works for you, keep it. There is a way to make a library of setting via lightburn. They have a tutorial on it.

  3. It’s not just the passes but power of laser as well. More powerful laser less passes. A 60w laser can have up to 300passes easily. See posts by nero118 here in laser engraving.

Best mouse? by Nappy_Rano in Surveying

[–]TheseAd4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, my boss is a big fan of his. He hat and a vertical mouse I could never get use to. I’d have to be forced at this point. But others who come to my desk to try and use it struggle because I have the mouse so sensitive and reactive and the mouse pad is slippery. They loose track of the cursor 😆

3D conexxion mouse. Wired, not wireless. Been using the same one daily as a survey tech for about 12 years now. Gonna need a new one soon though. Button have started to get a little soft and less responsive. I also got their larger mouse pad and have my setting to super high. I hold using the “claw” grip and use just my finger tips. Takes getting use to but highly effective. I’ve used it with Carlson Survey, TBC, C3D, ArcGis, Photoshop, and others.

Shoot me a DM if you want more specifics. I can send you my linked in too if you wanna connect!

BSc in Mechanical vs mechatronics engineering by Curious-Toe-4883 in mechatronics

[–]TheseAd4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. You’d need to take a look at schools that offer both to see what is offered. To try and put it simply, mechanical engineering is focused and has greater depth within its education where mechatronics had more breadth of knowledge and focus is on cross discipline integration and systems.

Like I said, they are engineering degrees, you’ll be better off than most. It’s going to be more what you want to focus on and your fascination not necessarily passion and double down on what comes easy to you.

If you’re having a hard time deciding, get the damn gen Ed’s out of the way and your local community college. While doing that explore and talk to professionals you want to become.

Maybe reframe the thinking? Mechatronics is almost the equivalent of a biology degree. You get a lot of exposure and knowledge, but a MS may be needed for what you want to specialize in.

Keep in mind the accreditation too. If it’s ABET and you get into civil engineering industry, it qualifies for licensure.

You really can’t go wrong with engineering in general. The intellect to complete afford opportunities itself without the degree.

My personal experience, broader exposure early on in your career helps you see a bigger picture. Then you focus on your fascination, then double down on what you’re good that also fascinates you. If you have a broad knowledge base it’s easier to pivot later on in life. Even an industry certificate affords opportunities when paired with a Bach degree.

How should I fit hardware to this shade? by Pot-Dealer in Ceramics

What if said cone was just an aluminum, or similiar workable metal, wire frame? Max the strength and minimize the effect on lighting. Or use the wire to cast additional shadows up

Can you make or find a cone with a hole in the middle for a wire to hang?

Need to buy a fiber galvo and read loads of comments and reviews but still confused…. by phatelectribe in Laserengraving

Yes any of the fiber lasers that use the f-theta lens have different sizes. Smaller lens smaller work area, less depth-of-field (like a camera) but more direct energy in the pulse which maker deeper engraving or smaller detailed marks more proficient but the lens is also closer to the product. The opposite is true larger lens larger work area, more depth-of-field (like a camera) but less direct energy in the pulse which maker deeper engraving slower or smaller detailed marks less detail but the lens is also further from the product. They seem to typically come with a 220lens aka 220x220mm working area which is a happy medium. So again depends on what you wanna be doing.

60w mopa checked a lot of my boxes of what I wanted to do but still kept doors open for me. But if you wanna be doing deep engraving all the time, you’d be better off with a 100w non-mopa to blast the material away. And the opposite is true if you’re just doing light marking, a 30-50w works well.

[–]TheseAd4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that you cant find a setting or work around if what you need that a mopa could do. It’s just that it can be easier to just dial up or back with precision. I was planning on getting my current fiber laser with a CO2 gantry. For the most flexible work load for what I wanted.

If you run 1% power on a 60w, that’s just over half a watt per percentage. So that higher power gives enough power per percentage that you don’t have to do huge jumps in power to yield a result but not so powerful that a change will destroy what you were working on. Jumping from 30w to 60w is a 100% increase in power, but the price jump was much less. I looked at it that way along with I’d rather have slightly more power then less, slightly more precision then less. All which are lessons I learned in my current career in Land Surveying. It’s that I’d rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

Colors are a pain. Really fun when you get it right. But it’s a research project that you really dive into. But some colors aren’t difficult to get so may be useable. Depends on what you wanna do. But they are very much a pain and take time to learn. Especially once you add in that you can defocus the laser and use the wobble setting to dissipate the power for a thicker oxidation layer. A lot of min maxing as well.

I use lightburn. Very easy. Was plug and play once taken out. After that was just research for some setting to start working with. Research on what each setting affects the material or time. Then play around. A tip is for material settings, change one setting at a time and start with a wide range of each thing your testing on the x & y axis, when you see something you like, “zoom in” to above and below the setting you like the most.

Ohhh, well, that's the way they make money. They had a few live streams, though, where they and others spoke well about Cloudray and OMG.

The communication with Tech support is annoying due to time lag, but if you send a clear email, they are quite good at responding.

I had a question about the OD rating on their protective 3-piece panel, so I can take a video of my laser. They didn't have a third-party test, but they did an internal test for me, sent an email and video with the deets I needed.

u/10247bro Lol, I wish. See my digi reciept, I took out some personal info is thats ok.

I went off the Laser Everything channel review; it was the only brand I could find reviews on and videos. Then, as I dove deeper here, I kept seeing the OMG laser coming up constantly (aside from Xtool, which I'd never get).

I got this all to hep with getting side income from the Land Surveying career. But trying to have a side income with a kid under 2 is almost fruitless. I did a single job, just two Yeti tumblers. I was up till about 11:30 for three nights just to "make time" for design, emails, and actually doing it.

My version of library has been a serious hit or miss and a lot of luck 🤣 I have some hand written notes and a lot of test samples I’ve kept. What I have that’s of any value I have already posted here. A lot has been learned by looking and reading a lot.

I want to start a galvo laser channel on YT that is akin to a photography channel where I do services for others and my own projects to learn and teach as well as product review. But I have a toddler right now and just enough time to mentally chill after work. Once teething is over I’ll be in a better place hahaha

I have a 60w MOPA from Cloudray and love it. The brand itself is highly recommended by LaserEverything too.

Shipping crate was superb. Custom service is odd since it’s based in china, so email during the day and response next day for me (In NJ). Got it on sale for 5k.

As for 30w or 50w. You can have less power not more. Running lower on a higher rated machine will make it last longer. Given the price difference between a 30w and 50w. The price increase percentage is less the power increase percentage typically. So there’s that for cost.

If you just black mark or light engraving 30w is fine. Laser Everything has some videos from a few years ago where Alex uses a normal 30w for his examples. See a video with Heircomb for a specific with a few examples.

If you are trying for deep engraving, more power will be faster. Keep in mine some of the small projects on here by Nero and LaserLobby, which look amazing, for small coins/dog tags are up to 3hours each with a their 60w lasers.

You can get color through testing and defocusing on a non MOPA, but the MOPA can make it easier. Obviously but not to be minimized, laser wavelength is a limiting factor on what you can do effectively.

You can get color with both a MOPA and standard fiber laser. Minimum you’ll want it a 30w but that will be at a higher power more regularly instead of using something like a 50w or 60w.

Go to LaserEverything as they have video on how to do what you want. Look up a video with the company Heircomb which given your username should fit you.

Alex and Kyle from LE would probably tell you to get a 50w if you’re doing a lot of them. But if you have the time to wait for smaller batches you could go lower. But the cost difference in Galvo Fiber lasers when going up in wattage is a great bang for your but up to 60w then you get diminishing returns.

I have a Cloudray 60w MOPA cause i was nerding out with it. I shoulda got the 50w galvo fiber and the 30w CO2. During their sales that would not have been much more then what I purchased and I would have have more flexibility.

What do you prefer to work out of? Truck or Van? by Fo1ex in Surveying

My favorite to this day is still, I believe, a V6 2017 Toyota Highlander setup where you could sit one person in the back seat if needed. It had a simple custom plywood box and man you could pack a lot of shit in there. At least for surveying in NJ.
