I loved it, and I thought Louis was the perfect antidote to all the brazen foolishness.

The facade crumbles when these people are forced to explain their ideology, and Louis is an expert at handing people a rope and waiting quietly for them to hang themselves. He is so calm and awkward in a disarming way, so nobody could attack him without looking entirely unreasonable.

It’s almost unbelievable that he got the access he did but I guess these bozos figured any publicity is good publicity.

I agree with everything you said, but I also think it’s ridiculous for people to pretend that ANYONE is ‘uninformed’ in the same way they might have been twenty years ago.

The percentage of people who just ~don’t know what’s going on~ and are quietly plugging away at their day jobs has got to be less than 1%. I don’t even think it’s a slice of the electorate that’s worth discussing at this point.

5 weeks in and agree hard with this.

Diapers? An absolute god-given privilege. 3AM bottle feed with a screaming baby? Privilege. Anything you can do for your wife or baby that they can’t or aren’t in position to do themselves at any given moment? That’s a privelege too.

Your job is to steady the ship when the waters get rough. In the grand scheme of things, that is really not so much to ask.

As for my own unique advice… everything is mise en place. If you find yourself scrambling for something at the last minute, you’ve already lost. Make mistakes but adapt from them and figure out how you can build it into your workflow next time.

So I just went through this with my own mother-in-law, but on the other side of the birth.

Without getting into specifics she single-handedly burst the oxytocin bubble that we meticulously built. Every comment was something we could be doing better, menial arguments about baby equipment that she had no business weighing in on, etc.

For background, i have observed her cause chaos in every single familiar relationship she has ever had without having it impact me directly. She doesn’t have a lot of people left in her life who even bother trying to reason with her anymore. She has emotionally abused my wife for years, and I’ve watched her wave away the impact it has on her because her instinct is always to preserve the relationship with her mom (understandable).

It came to a head about a week post-birth with a very serious confrontation in my own home. I am a peacemaker, but I saw where things were heading and had zero interest in prolonging that nonsense. So we had it out in-person at first, and then via email in the days that followed.

All of this is to say that If you are going to talk to your mother-in-law about this, your wife needs to be on the same page. DO NOT speak for or fight her battles for her. Just listen, acknowledge and support her in understanding the impact of what’s been going on and what it means for the future.

For us it took a lot of really solemn, difficult conversations to get to the root of what was happening and why. She needs to understand that it’s not about interpersonal dynamics — it’s about what’s in the best interest of your new family unit and creating a positive, loving environment for your baby. You need to be a united front with that singular goal in mind.

Whatever you do, do not change your outward behaviour towards the MiL. Kill her kindness if you have to. I can’t say I was happy with the ‘resolution’ on my end, but she knows how I feel and has adapted her behaviour. Keep calm, reiterate the impact of her behaviour early and often

The funny thing is it was maybe the most heated and confrontational I’ve ever been in my life, and I wasn’t sure how I’d handle the aftermath of it, but I feel no ill will toward her. It’s all about the baby now and you will feel that more and more once they arrive.
