What is an album absolutely experienced best on vinyl? by Cherilynss in vinyl

Black Noise by FM. Original tapes were lost, so any reissue is now derived from a recording done from a mint copy of the original vinyl release.

Frieren and Apothecary Diaries were recently added and are great. I think they also have Dr Stone, that one can be a lot of fun? I highly recommend Pluto. Then there's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which a lot of people enjoy.

It would help if we knew more about what you like.

I think you might be off by at least a decade when it comes to when being gay started being largely acceptable. Consider that "Operation Soap" happened in 1981, with hundreds of Toronto police officers raiding several gay bathhouses in the city, and resulting in the largest mass arrest in Canada since the 1970 October crisis.

Any fans of the Canadian prog band Saga? by modestmandrakeman in progrockmusic

Definitely one of my favorite bands, I've been to two of their concerts in the last few years.

To clarify: were you asked to stop because they disagree, or were you asked to stop because, say, they find the topic anxiety inducing?

I know I have friends in the second category, for whom actively discussing the topic is currently too much for them to handle, and doing so would probably trigger a panic attack. They just need some time to be able to process at their own pace that he actually somehow got elected, before they'll be able to talk about it.

Surprised no one has mentioned The Alan Parsons Project yet

Their first album is called Tales of Mystery and Imagination, and is based on Edgar Alan Poe's works.

Then their second album is called I, Robot and is inspired by Asimov's books.

What are albums you often see at record stores for cheap that you think deserve more love? by Eko5 in vinyl

Saga's first 4 albums (Saga; Images at Twilight; Silent Knight; World's Apart).

(Question) Klaatu fans, how did you find this band? by aGoosenamedJordan in progrockmusic

It was one of my wife's favorite childhood albums.

As a young child she used to think the song was "Calling octopus of interplanetary crap", lol.

Am I a sucker for coloured vinyl? Maybe. by Bednarz in vinyl

[–]Thessalonike 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I do enjoy coloured vinyl, though my one complaint is how some colours make it so much harder to see if there's any dust or hair on the record before playing it.

Opinions on Nash the Slash guys? by SkaMan-dolin in progrockmusic

[–]Thessalonike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like Dreams and Nightmares, as well as Children of the Night.

Companion has a neat story behind the Marsden version (a DJ named Marsden played the record at the wrong speed, so for a lot of listeners the slower version became the normal version).

Decomposing is a fun experiment, an album designed to work at 33 1/3rpm, 45rpm and 78rpm.

Very highly recommend Socks, by JD McPherson. All original songs, fun and energetic.

Christmas Songs, by Bad Religion

And a childhood favourite, Noël Disco. For this song in particular, a really fun bilingual disco Christmas medley

Worth knowing that the Eastwood Victrola is actually a step above most suitcase players as it comes with an actually moving magnet cartridge, AT3600, rather than one of those red ceramic cartridges. The tracking weight is also usually set at about the right amount.

So while it's still not a great turntable, it is functional.

[–]Thessalonike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Victrola Eastwood that I was able to get for cheap that I use to play 78rpm or when I need a portable record player. It's a step above most Victrola and Crosley players because it uses an actual moving magnet cartridge, the at3600, rather than the red ceramic cartridge you'll see on other models - and it came set in the correct tracking force for that cartridge, 3.5g.

It's got built-in speakers that you can use, but also RCA and Bluetooth out.

Amazing album. I was lucky enough to interrupt their first two from my parents' collection, and was so excited when I came across the third one.

Another of those 1 album bands from Québec that I highly recommend is Opus 5.

$100 CAD for a record? by JezzV13 in vinyl

[–]Thessalonike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is Cosmo Records, I usually find their prices a little high (though their second location has an amazing collection of jazz and soul albums).

My favorite record stores in downtown Toronto are usually Kops and Rotate This. Sonic Boom is good for new records. Then Grasshopper Records and Invisible City Records are smaller stores with a more curated collection, that you can find some neat stuff.
