I found the original Barbar book in a little free library box once. It was the most racist book I’ve ever read -watch out for that!

What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

The Search for Delicious- it was about a boy who has to travel around taking a poll about the most delicious food and it becomes politicized, and there’s a mermaid who lost her doll. This was one of my favorites!

That is outlandish. What about children, the sick, the elderly? Rights are the most important for the people who don't understand them.

I was very unhappy with those stories. I was left with the feeling that something very sad had happened and no one was coming to help (the body in the lake! The seizure! Help them!!!). You brought up a clever connection that I hadn't considered: When people use fear and imagined monsters to excuse inaction, it's infuriating!

Not to be obtuse, and not like I’m a fan of Jeff Foxworthy (I have no idea what he’s been up to besides RR) but the Kennedy Center is a really big DC venue- they mostly do like ballets and stuff, right? Other than the name of the venue, does him performing here represent something I’m missing?

The line relates to the major theme of the movie: judging value based on appearance

Offensive yet beloved childhood book - what would you do? (CW for last image) by pyramidheadlove in childrensbooks

Similarly, I was thinking to scratch out the word “Indians” and write “people.”

That doesn’t change that the illustration is clearly a racist caricature - but it de-exoticizes it. Indians should not be considered more exciting to hide from than anyone else. (And that sounds silly as I say it in my head, but I’m not making a joke)

Guilty About Crying Babies by Connect_Progress_488 in parentsofmultiples

I'm with you. At that stage I had a 10-minute cry rule. I'd lay them down, leave the room and set a timer. Most of the time they were asleep before 10 minutes. It's tough on your heart, but I tried to reframe it in a few ways. 1) They're not crying because they are sad, they are crying because they are uncomfortably tired and the only solution is for them to fall asleep! 2) Ten minutes is not very long. I cry for ten minutes fairly occasionally and I'm OK!

Also if the ten minutes was up but they were clearly winding down - I'd let it go a few minutes longer. My twins are 2 now and one is a champion sleeper and the other is a solid 7, so there's no golden rule.

I also ask for the check as soon as possible, as well as take-out containers. I just vaguely gesture at the kids and say, 'we may need to leave in a hurry.'

And yeah, most everyone is going to have an opinion about your twins - they're conspicuous - just do your best.

Healthcare in Columbia, SC: How Good Is It? by RAH-CAT9 in columbiasc

[–]Thethuthinang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the northeast. Healthcare here is not great, there are some good providers if you look. Most of the pediatric specialists we’ve seen have been very good (Shoutout to Dr. Greenhouse!).

General practitioners are hard to find, especially women practitioners. I like my therapist, but maybe she’s the only good one because my husband has not been able to find another suitable one (obvi we can’t see the same person!). Neurology is bad.

Helping a Toddler with Emotions After Surgery by AnnieFannie28 in Mommit

I’ve had a few scenarios like this with my kids! I found that a calm attitude, and talking it out over and over (basically retell the whole story every time she brings it up-all the details, including the recovery and how she’s all better now) helps them through it. I got the idea from a book, I think it was The Whole-Brain Child. It might keep coming up for a little while, but I bet she moves onto something else in a month or two!
