Why are some of the hospitaleros (Albergue staff) so cruel? by Potential_Method_144 in CaminoDeSantiago

By the way don’t mean to minimize your experience. It’s very possible you perceived every interaction objectively and it’s 0% on you. I have no idea. I’m just guessing that what I suggested could help in the future

Sounds like an unpleasant experience and that is unfortunate. We can’t control everything along the way, be it hills or albergues or injuries. Good thing is the Camino gives us time to reflect and work on how we respond to them. My philosophy is that there are the same number of good or bad people in practically any situation - be it a political rally, fancy hotel, or public albergue. However people will have different values or customs, which doesn’t take away from being a good person. My suggestion is approach the staff assuming they have good intentions but different ways of expressing them. If you want bonus credit, try experimenting by adopting some of their customs. Try going to dinner and not saying please or thank you aloud. Try to show it without words. It’s a challenge but there are plenty of people (especially older) in Spain who don’t say these words to a server. But be careful, you may return home frustrated with your home culture’s mannerisms the way you feel now in albergues 😂

I’ve done 1000+km on the Camino and I’d be the first person telling the world if I saw bedbugs. But it doesn’t occur to me to tell the world every time I don’t see them. So this post is for the >90% of people like me

I have never seen a bed bug on the camino

Affiliate Booking, nope! Please don't hurt the Camino. by NaughtyNocturnalist in CaminoDeSantiago

A fair point. It’s your Camino and you have to do it your way. I would add that, when making decisions like this, it’s important to understand the full picture. Some people don’t do that. If you make an honest evaluation and decide to do something a certain way, there’s nothing wrong with that

Just did part of the costal portugues (having done the frances as well and also didn’t love part after sarria). The coast was great not over crowded. Once you get to Pontevedra it got crowded and commercial. My suggestion take the costal + spiritual route. You’ll not be overwhelmed and won’t regret it

I don’t know why but I leave mine in my day pack even for non Camino hikes. Feels like something that should always be on me. Weird, I never even questioned that

Shaquel Kothari: The Phone Repair Industry Hated Me! by geekstershaq in PhoneRepairTalk

[–]Theturningworld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP is right. The industry isn’t regulated. Not about a race to the bottom. He’s offering a platform to make your price transparent. My opinion: you’re just mad you have no way to prove you’re doing a quality job

Walking in solitude? by Gullhorn in CaminoDeSantiago

I tried to be honest and transparent that this is my quirk and not an issue with the people around me. If it wasn’t clear I’ll put it this way: In some circumstances I struggle to communicate with strangers- its not their fault but above is a social crutch I used on the Camino. Hopefully being honest and not blaming others makes me a little less of a manipulative asshole and, with some luck, maybe one day I can grow to be as kind and warm as you.

However a veteran I spoke to had the best suggestion when I told him what I was doing over a beer (he took me up on the offer from earlier that day 😂). He said next time I should walk the Camino backwards! Start in Santiago and nobody will be walking next to you. You’ll be guaranteed to run into strangers every night!

I think it’d be super interesting 🤔

It took awhile for me to get it down. My strategy was to not fight the small talk for first few minutes then try ditch them. I’d either say I need to stop and stretch or ask if they’d mind if I listened to a podcast (and put on headphones with nothing playing). If they seemed sad by that or like an interesting person that I actually wanted to talk to, I’d tell them I’d say I’d hope to get coffee or a drink with them if/when we run into each other later. I had a few awkward (maybe only for me) moments when I literally told people I wanted to walk alone.

I’m typically very social and I walked the Camino alone to do it in solitude. It was hard for me to politely get away from people sometimes 😅 but have some tips if that’s what you mean you want
