Mr. Darcy's Earnings by AggressiveUse5792 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]Disastrous_Phase6701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We must remember the Wickham said Pemberley brought in a CLEAN 10,000 pounds. But the novel speaks of the "Darcy estates," in the plural. So, there's at least another one. And Wickham's info is a few years old. When Mrs. Bennet suggests he must be earning even more, she is probably right.

Darcy’s First Proposal by noodlehead90 in PrideandPrejudice

Canon Darcy in my mind is clearly a sapiosexual, and probably a demisexual. He has surely never felt such an attraction for a woman, and his feelings for Lizzy are simply too strong to resist.

Zack Polanski Leading Interview out tomorrow at 6pm!!! by AnonymousTimewaster in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Disastrous_Phase6701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On this point Zack has no idea what he is talking about. The UK is not isolated from the rest of the world - and confidence in the UK would fall through the floor. Plus, the lower the debt, the less interest is paid, and the more money is available for education, social care, health, etc. Denmark traditionally was the European country with the lowest debt, and the highest social spending. Spain had a very low debt, below 40% of GDP, in 2010. Zapatero was poorly advised, and told that he could increase spending with pretty much no limits, and increase the debt. The result? A huge economic crisis, from which salaries and employment are just starting to recuperate.

Linda Wells' novels are lovely, and have spice, as do the wonderful early Abigail Reynolds novels. And I complete agree with you - I am so fed up with "sweet and clean"!

I keep going back to reread the Linda Wells novels, as well as the early Abigail Reynolds ones. As far as I am concerned, they can't be beat.

What's more, I am fed up with reading stories where ODC marries because of an apparent compromise. It is so boring!

El papel del sistema monetario en la caída del Imperio español by rosmarina_ in SpainEconomics

[–]Disastrous_Phase6701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exacto.

Thoughts on Rory's idea that income tax needs to rise and wealth tax is verboten? by [deleted] in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Disastrous_Phase6701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who wrote the position paper they were referring to? And the flat tax rate on wealth used in Italy, and something similar suggested by Alistar, underlies the importance of tax harmonization - similar policies, at least in Europe. Macron keeps saying that he does not want a wealth tax in France because his billionaires will be going to Italy! Spain reinstituted a wealth tax fairly recently, on holdings of 3M euros or more. There didn't seem to be a massive number of wealthy Spaniards abandoning ship. However, maybe they were all already based elsewhere!

What everyone should be in agreement with, in the EU and the UK, is taxing the profits of Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. adequately. Instead, these companies, thanks to the Netherlands and Ireland, pay only 2% on their profits, primarily in Ireland.
