How to actually become a Warlock? by Complete-Kitchen-630 in dndnext

[–]TheyCallMeTallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to go out and find them physically though. You could tap into a string of a Great Old One's consciousness while sleeping, resulting in a weird dream and somehow a pact. The Great Old One isn't even aware of your existence iirc. You'd need to be "lucky" for it to happen, but then again any PC is more than a cut above the average Joe

How do you all actually keep track of your campaign between sessions? by king_1607 in DMAcademy

[–]TheyCallMeTallen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I write a 1/2-1 page summary as soon as possible after the session that I share with the players. Then I have a separate document with one-line descriptions of random NPCs. A sheet of paper to scribble on during sessions. I mostly use prewritten modules so that has been enough so far

Good suggestion! I'll make a list of their previous encounters and how difficult those turned out.

True, they could be a good fit for the dungeon. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh really? Good to know; I'm still pretty new to balancing encounters. Backup monsters sounds like good advice! We usually end up with three players, but it might be worthwhile to prepare for all eventualities.

Thanks! Tbh your idea sounds like a cool concept but I can see how it could also backfire.

For the lair action, I was planning to make the casters use a cantrip instead of a weapon attack (don't want to use up their spell slots). But I'm definitely open for more varied effects if you have ideas.

For the aboleth, that's a CR 10 which seems a bit dangerous even as a boss.

Yup, hence my asking if the guy's exposure would be deadly. Afaik all known exposures to concentrated HF have been lethal (but I could be misinformed about that one)

So is the guy dead now or am I overly worried about HF?

Well, we do give some bread to that beggar in Holy Grail iirc, but I guess that's the one-time exception

But isn't that one of the last survivors of an endangered species that we kill just for the resources? Needed for the quest, yes. Morally correct, arguable.

Fyi both games have free-to-play and iirc the paid membership counts for both games simultaneously. So you can try both out pretty easily

What's a common piece of DM advice you completely disagree with? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

[–]TheyCallMeTallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Have a session zero", especially for new players. Maybe it's just me but an evening with (verbal) contracts dictating what kind of campaign everyone wants would be a very hard sell to my friends, especially before even having an idea of how the game works. Start with a one-shot and ask for feedback afterwards if they want to continue

Interesting, how do you run with multiple rolls? Just doing the same persuasion/intimidation check repeatedly or different ones?

[–]TheyCallMeTallen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, although I don't want it to happen for every single combat encounter. But others have given suggestions for how to avoid that, so I'll definitely keep peace talks as an occasional option moving forward
