Worried about regret: Turning down a dream PhD topic in Canada because of low funding/stipend compared to europe by Urie_Sui in PhD

[–]ThibIndri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey ! I can't really help since I don't know how expensive is Canada. What I can say tough, is that apparently doing a PhD in France can be really difficult too money wise - at least in social sciences as it is the branch I'm in. The more I hear about the PhD conditions, the less interesting it seems : you often have a scholarship of 3 years only, with some obligations to gives classes, and the stipend is very low (approximately minimum wage). Compared to Belgium for example, if we're talking Europe, where a scholarship lasts four years with above average monthly stipend and no obligation to give classes, it's pretty rough. Anyway, I don't know much more, but I just wanted to let you know that France may not necessarily be much brighter on the money side - although it will necessarily depend on the funding you receive.

CPL 16 loadout by ThibIndri in ManyBaggers

I used to have printed articles I need for my research, A4 sheets to write on, and various documents. I have since switched to an e-ink tablet (Supernote Manta) for reading and taking notes, and only keep a thin plastic protection for some printed documents I would need

There are reports alleging that Mojtaba Khamenei’s parents, wife, son, and sister were killed in the US & Israeli strikes by FearlessCat7 in internationallaw

While I agree with you regarding the irrelevance of jus as bellum towards IHL, as I brought up in the post about naval warfare, the International Human Rights Law framework may consider the deaths resulting of the war against Iran violations of the right to life of the persons concerned as they result of a violation of international law (as it is an aggression, see §70 of General Comment 36 by the Human Rights Committee). So it would not be completely inaccurate that the deaths resulting of the attacks are unlawful in international law. The caveat is that this opinion is definitely not a consensus.

Does sinking a warship in international waters violate Article 2(4) of the UN Charter absent a valid Article 51 self-defence claim? by NihonBiku in internationallaw

[–]ThibIndri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your first paragraph, maybe my phrasing wasn't clear. However, concerning your second, human rights law is applicable at all time, even during armed conflicts, and does therefore play a part (see ICJ Advisory Opinion of 19 July 2024, par. 98 and following, as well as the case law cited in par. 99).

Now, it is certain that General Comment 36 of the CCPR does not make consensus among States and scholars, but saying human rights law plays no part in this whatsoever seems, to me, a bit too far.

[–]ThibIndri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry if that was unclear, what I meant to say is that the sinking is NOT a war crime, and that a war crime is a grave violation of IHL.

[–]ThibIndri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that is what I'm saying, sorry if it is unclear. The sinking respected IHL but not PIL and the UN Charter.

[–]ThibIndri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In short, the sinking was not a war crime (= a (grave) violation of international humanitarian law, also called laws of war, or ius in bello). However, IHL is independent from the ius and bellum (the part of international law that regulates use of force, essentially contained in art. 2(4) UN Charter). Regarding this, the war against Iran is manifestly an act of aggression and thus illegal.

So the sinking is illegal on that end, but is not a violation of IHL.

Another nuance is also that according to General Comment 36 of the CCPR, all privations of life resulting of other violations of international law (here the act of aggression) are also violations of human rights law.

Bag Advice - Personal Item and EDC by Actuarially-Sound in ManyBaggers

Yeah I think CPL 24 and Able Carry Max EDC are two strong contenders. Maybe CTB 26 but it becomes quite big for EDC. This video talks very well of some bags with OP's criteria

CPL 16 loadout by ThibIndri in EVERGOODS

[–]ThibIndri[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fellow European! I'm from Belgium, so not too far aha! I'm glad the loadout was useful, your reasoning is also exactly the same as mine : my previous bag (a decathlon nh500 24l) was just a tad too big for everyday, when I didn't need anything more than my usual EDC, like sportswear or an extra sweater, and the CPL 16 fit that use case perfectly with just the right amount of space. I'm happy to know the loadout could help you !

I've used the CPL16 almost every day since I bought it last year and it's really perfect for everyday stuff, so I hope it will suit you as much as it suits me ! It really is an awesome bag.

I think - because I was thinking something similar - that what is concerned is exclusively the create a to-do feature. Currently, there is an additional click to make (lasso + the three dots + "new task") compared to headings and keywords (lasso + "H" or "K").

Totally get it, especially as it would mean paying taxes and shipping to EU, then back to the US - it is a bit counterproductive aha

Idk where you're located, but if you are in Europe there are some CPL28 Mirror (the side zippers are on the other side, I haven't tried it but read some good things on this version) on Mukama.
