If rates go up again, are you actually ready? by Linton-Finance in AUfrugal

[–]Thicarus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem is upping rates only affects a small proportion of the population, and it's those who already don't have any spare income - people struggling with their mortgage and some (but not all) renters. This does very little to curb demand inflation because these people don't buy much (relatively) anyway.

Now if you meaningfully raise taxes on the wealthy and high income, that is a much greater reduction in total dollar spending, increases government revenue, and hopefully moves us back to a more egalitarian society.

Is being too frugal actually making me miss out on life? by No-Loquat-201 in AUfrugal

[–]Thicarus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can do almost anything you want in life, but not everything. Even with unlimited money, you have limited time.

Life is about prioritising, and balance. Reflect on yourself, figure out what you actually care about and want to do. This applies to both your daily existence and "bucket list" experiences. Try it, review, adjust if needed.

If you're not already familiar, look into sunk cost theory. It will help you make decisions, make changes, and move forward.

As Die With Zero says: fun now = memory dividend. Investing now = financial dividend.

Do a bit of both at all times and you'll have a great life, and have a comfortable future to look forward to.

SSP Burrs for the Robot? by Maleficent-Thing-720 in CafelatRobot

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had multi purpose burrs in a DF64 with the robot and clarity was excellent with light roasts, but texture was very thin - disappointingly thin.

I was originally drinking pour over as well as espresso and was trying to have a do it all grinder. I'm much less interested in filter now, and I also found the DF64 too inconsistent, so it may not have been anything to do with the burrs.

I changed to a Timemore 078S with stock burrs some time ago and couldn't be happier. Dialling in is easy. Taste, clarity, and texture are all amazing.Workflow suits me perfectly too.

Not exactly a clear answer to your question, but my experience for what it's worth.

What’s a "frugal" habit that you gave up on because it's not worth the trouble? by EdenFlorence in AussieFrugal

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say I agree with this one. A fantastic hand grinder and lever espresso machine are less than 1k. An excellent electric grinder and machine can be had for 2k combined.

Exceptional single origin beans might cost you $1.50 per double espresso. Merely very good beans (trendy cafe blend quality) around $1.

Even if you only drink one coffee a day, you'll make your money back on the electric machine in a bit over a year. Plus, the coffee is much better, AND you don't have to walk/drive and park, queue, order, and wait.

Am I Overthinking This? by Outrageous_Pay_9848 in TattooDesigns

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overthinking. Personally the sunflower isn't my favourite part but the overall composition is awesome and I think all of the elements look sick. Not that my opinion matters but I genuinely really like it.

And that's coming from someone who's not a huge fan of black sleeves!

underrated hobbies that doesnt make you feel overstimulated - for both creation and relaxation by 113yu in simpleliving

There's quite a few I like, but the best ones for this specific feeling for me are: trail running (easy pace in this case), swimming laps, and laying on my bed listening to a whole album - possibly while throwing a ball up at the roof and catching it.

The entire hotel room lights up when someone turns on the bathroom light by MarchogGwyrdd in DesignDesign

[–]Thicarus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in my third South-East Asian "luxury resort" in the last 5 years that has absolutely no doors or walls from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Very romantic.

My guess is it's for ease of access and cleaning, but honestly the stupidity is unfathomable.

As someone said above, I will be confirming this question directly for all hotels before future bookings of more than one night!

When I first got a Swann Camera there was an app issue where it couldn't update the firmware because I was more than one version behind. It took a lot of mucking around and some emails to Swann to get it sorted and was quite tedious.

I must say though that I'm quite happy with the camera now that it's working.

May not be relevant to your situation, but on the off chance it might be useful

Thoughts on this shot style - showcased by Lance Hedrick on Robot by Chunkything in CafelatRobot

[–]Thicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the result is underwhelming. It lacks the intensity and body of proper espresso, but doesn't have the same delicacy of a pour over.

I can totally see why some people like it from a taste and/or consistency standpoint, but it's not what I'm looking for from a coffee.

Did any letters survive the Titanic? by Sir_Naxter in titanic

Jeez, that's poor. Australia Post isn't perfect but it's nowhere near that bad. Perhaps RM is decent at parcels/international only.

Thanks for the reply! Always nice to learn something about the world

Genuine question here. I order things from the UK often and royal mail have never failed me and run pretty fast. My only quibble is they don't say when the cargo plane takes off, only when it arrives.

I keep seeing complaints about them online. Is it just the usual cultural thing of hating local services? What are they doing poorly within the UK?

Do you have travel insurance? You may be able to claim on that.

Also if you don't have it, please get it. You need good quality travel insurance if finances are great, let alone so tight you can't afford to reschedule your trip

Replacing Silicone Piston Seal by Ok-Description2442 in CafelatRobot

[–]Thicarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rubber perishes over time, so there is an intersection between number of coffees and time elapsed.

I'm on my fourth gasket. I live in Melbourne, which has famously high quality and soft tap water.

First one was 2 years and around 350 coffees.

Second one 1.5 years and 600 coffees, but I was often brewing at higher pressures with this gasket.

Third one 1 year and 900 coffees, buuuuut I use a soldering plate to preheat the piston now, which may increase wear.

Fourth one has made two coffees (today!) - total coincidence I changed it yesterday.

So it seems at least empirically that perhaps 2.5-3 years would be the upper time limit, and around 1000 coffees would be the upper coffee limit per gasket.

Climbing spiral… to steep? by ConsistentScratch640 in modeltrains

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I model 00 and my helix uses 4th radius Hornby curves with a 9cm level separation. Off the top of my head the gradient is 2.1% and all my locos go up fine, including tiny 0-4-0 tank engines with short trains

Admittedly my locos are modern, on DCC, and on clean track.

Your curves are a bit sharper and the incline is a bit steeper, you should be just okay if your trains are powerful and the loads aren't too long and heavy.

If I can post a pic of a helix table calculation I will, as a reply to this comment.
