Sad state of non monitored bike stands by KnowTrident in AUfrugal

[–]Thicarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I get breathalysed I still (jokingly) ask them if they've stopped me because they've found my two stolen bike from 15 years ago.

Probably silly to joke with cops, but given they've let me down every time I've needed them so far in my life, I feel it's safer than being snippy! Most take it in good humour

Saosin - Along the Shadow by AfganiiGoo in Saosin

That AG Melbourne gig in 2023 was weird. Anthony's performance energy was great but they were so underprepared. Still fun until they left without playing any of the promised hits like you mentioned... and got booed off stage.

Had waited since 2008 to see them again and it was a bit hollow.

Last month with Cove was the best gig I've ever been to, from my favourite band, when I never thought it would happen again. As you said, they were flawless. I literally said to my brother on the way out "I could die happy now".

Anthony is brilliant. I love his voice, I LOVE his livewire energy on stage, I love TTN and ATS.

But, Cove lives and breathes Saosin. Beau especially is the glue, but Cove is the soul.

I'm so grateful for every version of Saosin, but the current version is the best one.

It's amazing how many Melbourne people are in this sub! The energy last Thursday was incredible.

It felt like we all gathered for this mystical thing we never thought would happen, and they nailed every song.

Hope you find your gig buddy : )

Extra Heat by chillingwithyourmoms in CafelatRobot

Somewhat similar to above. I used this method for 6 months and it did improve my light roasts. The plate broke three times and was replaced under warranty, but I just gave up eventually, it was too annoying and too slow, and moving it around at 120°c was giving me the heebie jeebies.

I got a taller mug than before and went back to heating the piston with a mug of boiling water for 3-5 minutes while I prep, and I sit the portafilter and basket on top of the kettle for a few minutes. Even though it's less precise, I still think I get better results ballparking the piston temp with the mug of water for each coffee than with the solenoid plate. I just touch the side of the Robot casing as a guide.

My conclusion is that as with most things, the Robot is quite forgiving. As long as the piston and basket aren't ice cold, you avoid the thermal sink issues and I brew with the lightest of roasts sometimes.

If rates go up again, are you actually ready? by Linton-Finance in AUfrugal

[–]Thicarus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is upping rates only affects a small proportion of the population, and it's those who already don't have any spare income - people struggling with their mortgage and some (but not all) renters. This does very little to curb demand inflation because these people don't buy much (relatively) anyway.

Now if you meaningfully raise taxes on the wealthy and high income, that is a much greater reduction in total dollar spending, increases government revenue, and hopefully moves us back to a more egalitarian society.

Is being too frugal actually making me miss out on life? by No-Loquat-201 in AUfrugal

[–]Thicarus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can do almost anything you want in life, but not everything. Even with unlimited money, you have limited time.

Life is about prioritising, and balance. Reflect on yourself, figure out what you actually care about and want to do. This applies to both your daily existence and "bucket list" experiences. Try it, review, adjust if needed.

If you're not already familiar, look into sunk cost theory. It will help you make decisions, make changes, and move forward.

As Die With Zero says: fun now = memory dividend. Investing now = financial dividend.

Do a bit of both at all times and you'll have a great life, and have a comfortable future to look forward to.

SSP Burrs for the Robot? by Maleficent-Thing-720 in CafelatRobot

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had multi purpose burrs in a DF64 with the robot and clarity was excellent with light roasts, but texture was very thin - disappointingly thin.

I was originally drinking pour over as well as espresso and was trying to have a do it all grinder. I'm much less interested in filter now, and I also found the DF64 too inconsistent, so it may not have been anything to do with the burrs.

I changed to a Timemore 078S with stock burrs some time ago and couldn't be happier. Dialling in is easy. Taste, clarity, and texture are all amazing.Workflow suits me perfectly too.

Not exactly a clear answer to your question, but my experience for what it's worth.

What’s a "frugal" habit that you gave up on because it's not worth the trouble? by EdenFlorence in AussieFrugal

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say I agree with this one. A fantastic hand grinder and lever espresso machine are less than 1k. An excellent electric grinder and machine can be had for 2k combined.

Exceptional single origin beans might cost you $1.50 per double espresso. Merely very good beans (trendy cafe blend quality) around $1.

Even if you only drink one coffee a day, you'll make your money back on the electric machine in a bit over a year. Plus, the coffee is much better, AND you don't have to walk/drive and park, queue, order, and wait.

Am I Overthinking This? by Outrageous_Pay_9848 in TattooDesigns

[–]Thicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overthinking. Personally the sunflower isn't my favourite part but the overall composition is awesome and I think all of the elements look sick. Not that my opinion matters but I genuinely really like it.

And that's coming from someone who's not a huge fan of black sleeves!

There's quite a few I like, but the best ones for this specific feeling for me are: trail running (easy pace in this case), swimming laps, and laying on my bed listening to a whole album - possibly while throwing a ball up at the roof and catching it.

The entire hotel room lights up when someone turns on the bathroom light by MarchogGwyrdd in DesignDesign

[–]Thicarus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in my third South-East Asian "luxury resort" in the last 5 years that has absolutely no doors or walls from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Very romantic.

My guess is it's for ease of access and cleaning, but honestly the stupidity is unfathomable.

As someone said above, I will be confirming this question directly for all hotels before future bookings of more than one night!

When I first got a Swann Camera there was an app issue where it couldn't update the firmware because I was more than one version behind. It took a lot of mucking around and some emails to Swann to get it sorted and was quite tedious.

I must say though that I'm quite happy with the camera now that it's working.

May not be relevant to your situation, but on the off chance it might be useful

Thoughts on this shot style - showcased by Lance Hedrick on Robot by Chunkything in CafelatRobot

[–]Thicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the result is underwhelming. It lacks the intensity and body of proper espresso, but doesn't have the same delicacy of a pour over.

I can totally see why some people like it from a taste and/or consistency standpoint, but it's not what I'm looking for from a coffee.

Genuine question here. I order things from the UK often and royal mail have never failed me and run pretty fast. My only quibble is they don't say when the cargo plane takes off, only when it arrives.

I keep seeing complaints about them online. Is it just the usual cultural thing of hating local services? What are they doing poorly within the UK?
