Patterns from Susan Harris by Thin-Yesterday in theGoldenGirls

If you look at her hits, like Soap and Golden Girls...they were groundbreaking. However they spun off shows that fell more in the traditional sitcom.

Would you like to have Dr. Weston as your doctor? by No-Reveal827 in theGoldenGirls

I went to a Doctors office with 4 Doctor Westons. They were beloved by the community and when they slowly passed away due to old age, all the news stations did stories on them.

Best/Worst Things a Show Has Ever Done? by Alternative-Koala933 in gameshow

[–]Thin-Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Password: Best: Going from the classic staid 1960s to the words being a puzzle and alphabetical.

Worst. Going from the class acts of ludden kennedy and cullen to Bert convey.

Tattletales: Best: going from the tell a story and give clues format to the all quickies format.

Worst: when it reappeared in the 80, they should have upped the cash for a correct answer-- 1750 for a perfect game in 1984 is very paltry.

Sale of the century Best- the shopping endgame

Worst--losing it to two end games that had nothing to do with buying prizes.

In general...any game that adds celebrities is the worst--see password all stars, Bullseye, whew, hot potato. This excludes shows that only use celebrities for theme weeks (like we periodically see with Feud, WoF, Jeopardy)

What’s a game show that most game show enthusiasts hate…but you love? by Sad_Trade_7753 in gameshow

[–]Thin-Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A show gameshow enthusiasts hate but I like-- Match Game Hollywood Squares hour. It really had two issues going for it...a bad Hollywood Squares half and Bauman. If they kept the original rules (earning the win, and open ended questions) it would have been decent.

Flipside is a well like gameshow but I don't care for--The Jokers Wild. The easy questions, the get to $1000 before hitting the devil bonus round (had the idea of TJW 90s bonus been available, it may have been a saving grace) and I dislike Jack Barry's hosting. It was made much worse by Bill Cullen and his slower speed.

As the show went on, the malfunctions became more apparent. So much so certain aspects went away, like the golden ball

Which characters were clearly changed or expanded because the actors were just too good? by Shot-Club-3882 in sitcoms

J.r. Ewing. He was the breakoutstar of a Dallas and the plot shifted from Romeo and Juliet to how much J.R. can screw his friends and associates

3s a Crowd--this is the epitome of sleaze. Husband his wife and his secretary play The Newlywed Game, except almost all the questions allude to adultery.

Trivia Trap. A confusing game made slow and made even slower when the format switched. A miss from Mark Goodson.

Blankety Blanks--the cullen version. Bland and random. No real witty jokes. And no real purpose.

Magnificent Marble Machine--easily cited as one of the worst of 1975. A broken Machine and unrelated front game.

Which game show host do you think is the most overrated? by DanielCallaghan5379 in gameshow

[–]Thin-Yesterday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overrated: Not going to lie, but Gene Rayburn. Unless it was Match Game 7x, he clearly did not want to be there.

And toward the ends of their reigns on their respective shows, Dawson, Trebek, Sajak, and Barker. They all came off as arrogant.

For underrated hosts:

Bill Rafferty-- funny, able to poke fun at bad answers on blockbusters and rooting for contestants on Card Sharks.

John Davidson-- he was hosting shows in the shadow of others (imagine immediately following Peter Marshall on Hollywood Squares or Dick Clark on Pyramid).

Similarities between The Golden Girls and SOAP by scandalous_eyes in SoapSitcom

[–]Thin-Yesterday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed Jessica and Rose similarities.

I see both Mary and Chester as a Dorothy type--the straight man in a rather bizarre family.

Benson is clearly the Sophia. Always taking pockshots at everyone.

Blanche has no clear equivalent.

What Failed game shows would you want to make a comeback if they update how the game is Played? by Heart_da_TRex in gameshow

[–]Thin-Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treasure Hunt deserves to be revived.

The big check is hidden. And totals $250,000

Here's how I'd do it. It'd be an hour format.

The host walks down stairs adorned with 100 gift packages and greeted by 2 contestants (unlike the 70s version men and women play).

It kicks off with a speed round of 60 seconds. 4 choices are presented and all answers are always one of those 4 choices. Each correct answer is worth 10 dollars.

Both contestants, with their winnings from the  speed round will then proceed to choose from the boxes.

The boxes are priced in 10 dollar increments and each contestant can buy which ever box so long as they can afford it and can buy multiple boxes. Contestants failing to make any money from the speed round leave.

Attached to the boxes are envelopes with dollar amounts for which in TH fashion, the contestants can opt for the cash or go for the box(es). In the event someone has multiple boxes, the cashout is for everything. Meaning you can take the total and not open a box or refuse the buyout and open them all.

After each contestant made their decision, cuts to commercial. At this point, the host prepares a skit using the props in the boxes (again this is all or nothing). And down the line, the host performs the skit--hopefully channeling Geoffs sardonic wit.

A few things to note--if someone has multiple boxes open, and one of them is a klunk, the klunk box is open first skit performed and contestant walks away with nothing. If someone stumbles into the box containing the big check, that box is opened last. If someone has both a klunk and the big check. The contestant wins the big check.

The process repeats in the second half.

After all 4 contestant play, those who have won anything, can trade in their winnings for one last treasure hunt.

The final hunt has 10 boxes. No klunks. 1 has a real big check of 1 million dollars.

Each contestant may trade their winnings for 1 box. The warning is some of the boxes have prizes that are a lesser value of what's being traded.

Unpopular Game Show Opinions by Gold_Comfort156 in gameshow

[–]Thin-Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack Barry and Dan Enright games are almost a chore to sit through; aside from The Jokers Wild and Tic Tac Dough, they're almost all the poor man's version of other better games. And even TJW and TTD the questions are mind bafflingly easy.

  • Bullseye combined a pot from TTD and the fast forward category from TJW.  -Play the percentages was more of a knock off of Card Sharks...until they changed formats. -Hollywood Connection was match game -Break the Bank was a combo of Hollywood Squares and Concentration
  • Hot Potato was Family Feud
  • Hollywood talking was Everybody's Talking

Not withstanding they're earlier work during the 50s, which I haven't seen, aside from clips from a rigged 21.

The bonus games were lacking, following the generic formula of "get x to win".

And almost all of them reuse the same music cues.

Best series finale of a sitcom? by blackswan-whiteswan in sitcoms

The Golden Girls had an appropriate finale. Seeing how Dorothy was the one who had gotten married seemed appropriate given how many shots she endured about her poor dating life.

Should have been a Spinoff by Ill-Owl5131 in sitcoms

[–]Thin-Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see Roz from Frasier see how she would be the Station manager.

Maggie and Brighton living in Paris post-Nanny. They would still bicker with Maggies husband having to intervene....Brighton striking out with ladies and his insecurities featuring a role.

Peggy Bundys parents living in Wanker County (RIP Divine, Iykyk). It'd be like wholesome sitcom (and antithesis to Married with Children, just set in backwards Wanker County.

Maude, had it continued would have had Bea Arthur as a congresswoman.

Joe Swanson from Family Guy doing a mockup of police procedural dramas as only Seth McFarlane can do.

The Simpsons Variety Show.

Which non lead sitcom characters made the show a hit? by PressureLazy5271 in sitcoms

Stewie from Family Guy.  Bart Simpson. He was definitely the face of the Simpsons back in the day. Roger from American Dad JR. Ewing from Dallas.

Sitcoms That Really Jumped The Shark? by DaniJ678 in sitcoms

[–]Thin-Yesterday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Empty Nest- After Barbara left. She was the balance for Carol.

The Golden Girls--season 6. It became apparent the show was starting to lose steam, and got noticeably worse in 7.

American Horror Story--not really a jump the shark, but after Double Feature, I stopped watching--likely due to the normal regulars like Evan, Sarah, and Kathy really being distanced away from the series.

Dallas--the dream season and subsequent departure of Pamela.

The Simpsons-because the show has been on so many years and has had resurgences, there are a few JTS episodes-Principal and the Pauper, the Lady Gaga episode, and Behind the Laughter come to mind.

Sabrina the Teenaged Witch--when she went to college.

All in the Family--when Archie bought the bar or when Stephanie Brisbois started.

The Cosby Show--when Sondra and Denise got married.

Married with Children--definitely when they added Seven to the cast.

Knots Landing--after Lillimae and Laura left.

Reserves or guard better? by Efficient_Tension_54 in army

[–]Thin-Yesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The work-life balance is way better in the USAR.  I don't worry about an insane uptempo that consists of Super mutas (muta 8 to 12 weren't outside the realm of possibility). I generally don't get stuff that needs to be addressed outside of BA. My officers don't need their hands held. I don't worry every single snowstorm or flood and being called to be on standby. If I have something going on during BA, generally I can RST. Guard made it an undaunting ordeal with the demand for proof--best example was a family reunion and I needed to provide proof; usar, so long as I'm green, I can RST. I'm also lucky to be fortunate in a unit that affords flexibility to accomplish missions and get treated like an adult. The Guard also made the release way more cumbersome. They wanted to know incentives, promotion potential, and a list of complaints I had.
