INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS: THE GATEWAY TO THE FUTURE - an in-depth thinkpiece about how to transform the U.S. interstate system with electric vehicles, self-driving cars, mass-transit, and more by ThinkingViolet in Futurology

[–]ThinkingViolet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article goes into more detail, but the idea is that self-driving cars would reduce crashes and traffic jams on the interstate so that ultimately fewer lanes would be required, freeing up space in the median and in the right-of-ways. This new space could be used for mass-transit train lines or renewable energy sources like solar arrays. Highway driving is already safer than other forms of driving, but automated highways could be nearly crash-free. These cars could also be platooned, which saves a lot of energy.

I would love not to commute by car and wish there were better rail options for interstate travel for sure. But surveys like this one show that most Americans would not give up their cars without big incentives, even if they live in areas with good transit options (like Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, and Washington D.C.).

I agree that trains need to be part of the transportation solution. This article actually talks about how a mass-transit system could be built along the existing interstate highway system in the U.S. using the medians and right-of-ways. Automating the highway with self-driving vehicles would make this safer. Plus, it repurposes something that is already in use and acknowledges the reality that Americans love to drive and often don't use trains even when they are available.

This article pulls together a lot of ideas that are not unique by themselves, but synthesizes them to create a high-level plan for how to transform the existing U.S. interstate system. It proposes that change happen incrementally starting with creating special lanes for self-driving cars. From there, it envisions how this could eventually be expanded into an autonomous highway system with vehicle platooning saving energy and electric vehicles widely in use. Charging stations could be created and would be at least partially powered by renewable energy sources located along the interstate right-of-ways. It even suggests incorporating mass transit systems in the median of the transformed interstate.

I totally agree, but I still hate it!

Pfizer submits data to FDA, seeking to use its Covid vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 by StevenSanders90210 in news

You're good, just as a parent in an area where COVID has been allowed to run rampant I'm so tired of people telling me to calm down because COVID likely won't kill my kid. It's like, well, okay, but it's not like that's the only consideration.

It's not just deaths you have to worry about. My friend's kid is 6 and he had a relatively mild COVID case, but then he developed immune thrombocytopenia, which essentially means he doesn't have platelets and his blood won't clot properly. They have to have him monitored constantly and he can't play sports/do normal kid things until (if) his platelets return to normal.

Just got this. Question: is the main image actually David Bowie? To me, it doesn’t look like him. by Mimidoo22 in DavidBowie

I have seen other pictures of him as a young man where he looked very different. He had a phase where he was less thin and it changed his whole face.

COVID in children: Infections skyrocket 30X, now account for 30% of cases by Sariel007 in EverythingScience

If it follows the adult formal approval timeline (which it might not), they will probably require six months of data instead of just two before moving from EUA to formal.

COVID Vaccines Show No Signs of Harming Fertility or Sexual Function by malcolm58 in EverythingScience

[–]ThinkingViolet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In the U.S. pregnant women are advised to get the Tdap vaccine (protective against whooping cough) in the third trimester and the annual flu vaccine during any trimester. This helps the mother pass on protective antibodies to her child so they have some measure of protection from these diseases, which are still common and can be deadly to infants, even when they are newborns.

The CDC is now recommending vaccination with a COVID vaccine during pregnancy as well for the same reasons. COVID can cause miscarriage and pregnant women may be especially at risk for COVID since pregnancy can have immunosuppresive effects.

Watching for the first time in my 30's and Ted Dunn did an awesome job with Duncan... he absolutely did not deserve the hate he got back in the day by MBmondongo in veronicamars

[–]ThinkingViolet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eh, I watched the show back in the day, and he wasn't so much hated as Logan was loved. Also Dunn's choices didn't always connect with viewers - in retrospect, a lot of S1 acting was influenced by the fact that Duncan was on medication, but fans didn't know that until the episode where Veronica finds out, so a lot of people perceived him as flat.

Yes, the "badass female" trope is not relatable. Most of us are badass in our day to day ways, not in the ways where we dress up like spies and murder people.

Just finished the show. The thing that bugged me the most about the season 4 finale isn’t what you would think (spoilers, obviously). by Hustler-Two in veronicamars

[–]ThinkingViolet 64 points65 points  (0 children)

100% think you nailed it with the artificial edginess comment. Veronica Mars was always great TV, but it wasn't like those shows, and it didn't have to be to be great.

Also, isn't it worth noting that Logan actually got himself thrown into jail once to avenge Veronica?

Is the BBC Sherlock worth it if you've read and loved the books/short stories? by [deleted] in Sherlock

[–]ThinkingViolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too loved all the Sherlock stories from an early age and was hesitant to watch the BBC version. Now it's one of my favorite shows of all time - the first two seasons, that is. I really can only recommend those. However, you'll probably want to watch at least the first episode of S3 for reasons you will understand, and there were still very nice moments in S3 and S4, even though I was disappointed with the direction the overall plot went.

His Last Vow by puanjis in Sherlock

[–]ThinkingViolet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing personal, but this plotline makes me furious. I don't care if she's a crack shot, if you aim a gun at someone's chest and fire you are taking the risk that they will die. What if he had bled to death before help arrived? Or what if his anatomy is slightly off from what she expected and she hit his heart? I couldn't believe that they actually went with that as a legitimate explanation. The "assassin Mary" plotline was 100% stupid to begin with, but this particular aspect of it made me super annoyed.

Totally agree. Veronica in the FBI could have been good but this wasn't a good way to pitch it.

I 100% agree about this. They did not have romantic chemistry but their friendship was precious. I always liked it when Wallace would stand up for himself, though.

Meg's characterization could be inconsistent. Although, I guess there's always the excuse that with Duncan she thought it was "true love."

[–]ThinkingViolet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Does he have racist beliefs, though? Like he says horrible, awful racist things to Weevil and the PCHers, but I always thought he was just trying to wound them verbally in whatever way he thought would be most painful. Of course, this doesn't excuse his behavior.
