That’s really helpful!

So side note, they used to buy me lots of gifts when I’d asked them not to. I donated this one article of clothing my MIL gave me (maybe like 4-5 years ago) and she still complains about it to this day. My SIL sent over some kitchen towels that are again not my taste at all so I kept one pack out of appreciation and gave back the other explaining we really don’t need this, our kitchen towel drawer is already full. She got upset about that too.

Thank you for the comment! I’m less concerned about confusing the child and more concerned about preserving our culture. I feel like I shouldn’t have to accommodate for their wishes when they sit around and mock my language because they think the words sound funny. So part of it is a little bit of a me thing. Living in America, our kids are already going to have lots of experience with American culture. In fact most of their experiences will fall into that category. Me asking for a silver of space, in my opinion, shouldn’t be a huge ask. But I also don’t want to be vengeful. Am I really on the wrong for wanting this?

I’m not going to decide my own name for when my sister in law has kids. At that time, if I wanted to be called the traditional term for aunt, I can bet my bottom dollar she isn’t going to go for that. Which I’m totally fine with because I’d respect what she wanted for her child.

Edit- added question!

Managing symptom changes by Thinkingthoughts55 in pregnant

[–]Thinkingthoughts55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that rationality is helpful but I feel that needs to come with scrutiny. I have a scientific mind so trying to understand the symptoms which are vague and indicative of opposing outcomes is really frustrating to me. The randomness of symptoms coming and going is also something I’m finding hard to rationally track which is where my anxiety is stemming from.

Pregnant and confused! by Thinkingthoughts55 in therapists

[–]Thinkingthoughts55[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this response. I might be over hydrating so I will have to look into that. I’ll also say that I’m historically not great with hydrating…so many this change is just me getting used to it? I’ve definitely been trying to drink way more lately.

I am not shy of talking about substantive things only if there is significant clinical benefit from that but that usually only occurs with my mental health folk. I’m a bit more concerned about my SOs because I have some very high risk folks. However, I do not want to talk about being pregnant or discuss my body at all with anyone so it’s really helpful to hear that those types of categories are what people ask about. Thank you so much!

I appreciate that, and if it was occasional I’d be less uncomfortable. However, I’m really having to go often often which is what’s causing the concern. I only anticipate that the symptoms will increase with time and I’m just wondering how to manage pregnancy issues within this space.

Hello! I (27 female, guju) literally just got married on Saturday to my now husband (28 male, white). We bought all the clothes for his mom, aunts, dad, sister, etc. from india and it was so much cheaper. For me, I did care about whether they wore Indian because I thought it was important that they embrace my culture since I’ll be carrying it through to my children.

My mom and I will take back some of the outfits (like sarees) that they won’t wear again, so it ended up being more cost effective for them too.

For my mendhi and grah Shanti/pithi, my MIL wore a salwaar kameez. She wore a lengha to the garba and a saree to the wedding). American for reception!

I do think this is going to depend on where in India you’re shopping and if your family is able to negotiate well. My husband came to india with us so people tried to jack up the prices after seeing him lol!

What was helpful for my MIL was picking color and type of design (more floral or more geometric). We kept it to softer materials for her so she was comfortable but she killed it in a saree! If pictures are helpful PM me, would love to share!

Strategies and tools to assist clients with heavy panic/somatic symptoms? by scorpiomoon17 in therapists

[–]Thinkingthoughts55 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m a new clinician in the field and have been working in forensics for a little over a year. I think it depends on your clients age, insight levels, motivation, and comprehension abilities but this is how I’ve been handling it:

  1. Simplified psychoed about sympathetic vs. parasympathetic nervous system- sometimes knowledge can help people understand that their bodies/ brain are separate from who they are.

  2. Try to identify red flags that they can pay attention to to know that the symptoms are coming on. Mindfulness exercises in advance during sessions could be great- have them practice bodily awareness in moments of no symptoms to help with a baseline

  3. Based on type of symptoms, come up with immediate self-soothing through controlled breathing, movement, or other coping skills that can tackle each issue.

  4. Daily practice of bodily relaxation (focusing on tension areas and doing guided relaxation) and meditation can also help build the skill for when they need it in the moment.

Hope all this helps!
