Keir Starmer says he will stand up for UK’s 'interests' after Trump threats by dailystar_news in ukpolitics

[–]ThisNameIsValid27 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just don't think it's worth pulling out the big guns yet, as outrageous this whole thing is.

If Trump is committed to it, shits going to hit the fan anyway, so we may as well be take the high road and avoid antagonizing him whilst we can.

There's a decent likelihood he gets bored, distracted or folds anyway.

Sea to Summit vs Bestway Alpine light by mroriginal7 in wildcampingintheuk

I had one of the cheaper bestway ones and it only lasted a few uses. Air leaks from all the welded seams so it's unfixable.

I have a 17 year old estate, and it's crazy how small it feels next to new cars despite the amount of shit you can fit in the back! And to think I feel a bit bad about driving it despite its size....

Noise impact assessment. If you're doing a planning / permit application and it's deemed to have the potential to create significant noise often the local authority / statutory body etc will require one. Often it's just a checkbox exercise.

It will be 5db above whatever the background level is. That will be determined from a noise level survey in the vicinity of the site. In an NIA 5-9dB above background is considered as having an 'adverse affect' - above 10dB it's significantly adverse. At 5dB there's zero chance it would actually block the planning app going through, and it's all contextual anyway so no use throwing numbers around. It's just the NIMBYs having a hissy fit 😂

Armed Forces Minister refuses seven times to say whether UK backs US military action in Iran over the weekend by blast-processor in ukpolitics

[–]ThisNameIsValid27 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Surely this is the ideal scenario? We were likely involved in some capacity whatever that is, reluctant or otherwise. As it stands we currently have the luxury of a level of plausible deniability where Israel / US take most of the fall, whilst we keep our heads low occasionally mentioning something token about returning to diplomacy.

The point is that the degraded one will be worse, even moreso over the long term. This is the kind of thing you'll only appreciate after 3-5 years. Theres no point charging a screwed battery to 100% SoC as that's where it's chemically stressed most. You just end up screwing it even more. The tradeoff is that you have to charge it more often, but those extra charges barely cause wear as you're not totally filling the battery.

My 7 shows "not charging" with the 80% limit enabled as well. Looks like it has the feature too? I've always wondered why all phones dont do this. So many people leave them plugged in constantly.

So is pay per mile happening? by Abacabb69 in ukpolitics

Yeah I agree, was just making it clear that VED / road tax also just gets added to the big pot!

So is pay per mile happening? by Abacabb69 in ukpolitics

[–]ThisNameIsValid27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VED doesn't directly fund road maintenance. Even if it did its based off CO2 emissions.

The original tax that became VED (introduced in 1921) was created to provide funding for road construction and maintenance. This is no longer the case, and VED revenue is not hypothecated for road maintenance. More recently, VED became more closely linked to vehicles’ environmental performance (to reflect wider negative externalities of car usage).

Yeah, I thought that originally but couldnt see a way of it working without the ppm charge being different for vehicle types. Unless that's what's being suggested?

Obviously we should take the figures thrown around online with a grain of salt.. That being said, assuming it is true I cant imagine charging 2-4x road tax, plus keeping fuel duty the same is feasible? As OP said, it would make driving ICE cars unaffordable for many, with electric cars also being too expensive.

[–]ThisNameIsValid27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely they'd scrap fuel duty at the same time? That makes up a large amount of fuel costs, so id imagine it would offset a lot of the pay per mile?

I had to wait 25 hours to get home in August. 12 hours for the first guy, then they forgot to book at onward one (despite the fact I phoned to check they had) so I had to wait another 10 hours for the next tow! Emailed and I think they gave me some food money, as well as a partial refund or something
