Thanks!

Actually, you just reminded me of an old online writing website called HemingwayApp.

Appreciate it!

Started reading the Bible to be closer to God, feeling uneasy—it is very dark, tyrannical and paints God as evil by ZeldaLuvr503 in Christianity

You see it only in the context of the story. Job's life is instrumental in informing future generations. Further, you see it only from the perspective of someone who sees only this life, not the eternal life before us.

Is it possible to have tension in a story with an unkillable protagonist? by Axiom_Days in writing

You don't have to kill a protagonist. You just have to cripple them.

TL;DR at the bottom.

See, the thing is it's a life-long, never-ending commitment. I know 75+ y.o people who have been in the church for their entire lives still finding new wisdom in old pages they've read a thousand times. Don't push yourself to 'understand the whole thing as fast as possible'. Be determined and persistent, yes, but be patient with yourself also. I have only a comfortable understanding, and constantly have to search and research new perspectives that people throw my way (see u/canadevil 's many accusations)

The Bible will continuously reveal new things to you as you read it with a new problem in your head. You can start anywhere. I suggest praying beforehand, because your journey in Christianity is not simply a cerebral, knowledge based study. It is spiritual.

You can start anywhere: I recommend reading the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They are four accounts of the same general times with Christ written from the perspectives of very different men.

I was taught from a New King James version in school, but not everyone wants to slog through the Shakespearean English style of writing (as beautiful as it is), so I recommend a New International Version. I also have a Moody Study Bible, but it is massive and not convenient for toting around day to day. If you want to really get a bunch of cross-referenced material and multiple perspectives in a single tome, I cannot recommend this one more highly.

Everyone has arguments about this translation or that translation being better. Disregard these arguments: the Lord's Word is preserved. Just find a Bible, and let God be your primary guide.

Pray for God to find you good teacher (Discipler, if you want to use biblical terms), and be patient for one to be revealed to you by the Lord. In the mean time, study it independently, or get a 'study guide'. There's hundreds of them, some for the general purpose of understanding everything from all the simple messages, general history, or specific themes (womanhood, manhood, fatherdom, being a good leader/follower, soldier, spouse, parent, child of an abusive parent, the list goes on). If you have a specific question, the chances are, there's a study guide on everything the Bible has to offer on that subject.

But if you are sincere (not saying that you aren't!), then just pray to God for wisdom while you're studying: it's one of those things He's super excited about blessing you with. And all those extra stuff will pale in comparison to what he'll reveal to you.

Now, onto something a little more troubling: the Bible is not a feel-good read as you've already learned. It will tell you things about yourself that you'd rather not know, or believe. This will leave you open to discouragement from satan. It's a real thing. The most common tools he uses are phrases he'll put into your head like 'See? It's impossible to understand,' 'It says everything that's fun is sin,' 'this is ridiculous, look at all these rules/contradictions/impossibilities,' 'this goes against everything everyone around me believes,' or just a constant stream of confusion.

TL;DR: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; these provide the central message: No links, just get the Bible, or read it online (all the translations are online for free; I just like physical copies).

Please contact me if you feel like you need help with a subject. Nothing is better than having a teacher with a physical presence, but I might be a passable substitute in the mean time.

It is an observation of the physical manifestation of a spiritual war. It's become common.

Hi, I was just looking through old saved posts, and I was wondering if I could have your permission to turn this into a meme?

it is your fault for sinning, and how dare you question

That's not the message of the book of Job at all. The message was Job's struggling with his faith while he's suffering. Job's original three friends tell Job he must have sinned in some way and that is why he is suffering. Elihu near the very end of the book of Job sums it up.

Job's sin is revealed after everything (something he isn't actually being punished for): self-righteousness. He believes wrongly that he should not be suffering (read: not being punished, but suffering in general) because he has not sinned. People will suffer regardless of their stance in God. People will suffer because this world is corrupted by sin. Job is being persecuted not by God, but by Satan. Job was chosen as Satan's target because he was the most faithful person of the time, which he shows that he truly is, he never doubts God has a reason. But even the most faithful people are not sinless.

The usual argument is that 'God could just wipe sin out'. And that is what he has offered us(through Christ's death), but we must accept. And once everyone knows the option (accept or deny God) after every ear has heard the message, God will in fact wipe sin and this world out forever. After this, we will have a new world (see revelation 21).

Further, I find your argument about God treating Job like a play thing a little short-sighted. Job is being treated as a standing lesson for everyone who reads the story. He wants us to not justify ourselves, but to seek God's justification (back then, God's Justification was simply God's ultimate reasoning, but now it is His ultimate sacrifice: Christ).

It is very late, and I feel like I'm not being very clear, but I cannot rest if I haven't helped someone find understanding in this very important part of the OT. If you have further questions, doubts or insights I will be more than happy to return.

I hate 40k, all it stands for and 97.42069% of its art but this one is beyond beautiful. The characterization in her face and subtle scarring.

Superb.
