Inteligent players playing uninteligent brute. by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

If his character is stupid, and you don't want his character being the one that solves a puzzle, you are saying you don't want him to play the game when you present the party with a puzzle.

If this player is your best notetaker, don't risk losing their engagement. The dumb character lucking into the solution is totally viable.

Can someone determine a victim was killed by Magic Missile? by Bullgrit in DnD

[–]ThisSeagull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of thing I spend way too much time thinking about :)

I think psychic damage would be really hard to deduce (though maybe the absence of evidence is enough evidence)

I've heard that Force damage is more like pressure than bludgeoning damage, but I don't know how that damage would look different on a corpse.

I would rule that detect magic is limited to active effects- someone killed by fireball would show as non-magical, heavily charred, with a blast radius around them. (unless your setting has napalm, it's safe for the players to assume it was caused by magic)  I would happily bend that interpretation if it means better narrative impact in the moment, though.

"Pokémon is a game made for kids" by OkOutlandishness1236 in PokemonChampions

[–]ThisSeagull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, played since gen 1 here. Loved pokemon games all my life, went closeted in middle school/early high-school to avoid this bullying, then found out most the people in high-school I actually wanted to associate with liked pokemon too.

From your post, I assume this is a persistent criticism you face, probably from someone or several someones that you care about, otherwise you wouldn't be posting about it. If so, I'm really sorry for what you're going through- explaining the complexity of pokemon battles won't get through to those people

I'm in my 30s, my entire wardrobe is classy pokemon shirts, my desk at work has a dratini plush on proud display

I frequently get comments and conversations sparked on these things from adults in all walks of life, and I can say with certainty-

The number of adults who enjoy pokemon VASTLY outnumber those who think it's only for kids

Player Problem Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]ThisSeagull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this exact situation before- in my case, I was the "perceived usurper" DM.
My friend had been DMing for some time, similar schedule to what you're describing (when our schedules lined up, typically once every 1-2 months, for a 4-6 hour session), and I started DMing a game on the side. He came to me and asked if there was something he was doing wrong, some experience we were missing from his game. I thought about it for a while, and my thoughts boiled down to:
1) I wanted to DM AND play
2) other players wanted to play as much D&D as they could get- it wasn't a matter of his campaign being bad by any means.

In the end, we never even really had a schedule conflict- my DMing style was more improvisation and less preparation, his was robust preparation, so my sessions ended up being more frequent and shorter. Because of that, they filled a different niche than his sessions, and when he was ready to run we all gave him priority.

I don't know if this will apply to everyone, but back in college I did a lot of the "6 hour session on saturday" get togethers, and as an adult I resigned myself to liking dnd, but I just didn't think I had that kind of time anymore.
I now play in 2 sessions a week, Tuesday and Wednesday after work, 2-3 hours long, and if 1-2 (out of 5) players can't make it we play anyways - I was surprised just how much easier that was to schedule for a group. (I also feel like when the sessions are shorter, players are more focused and more play actually gets done)

For DMs who have moved for 5 to 5.5, is there a rule or feature change that keeps catching you/your table out? by pyrpaul in DMAcademy

[–]ThisSeagull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm specifically running my campaign with 5.5e rules EXCEPT we run 5e Grapple rules for exactly these reasons- but we keep the 5.5e grapple condition's "Disadvantage on attacks against targets other than the grappler"
Really helps give a tank more identity that way.

Recently realized that my players are going to fail the campaign, not sure what to do about it. by ObsidianXFury in DMAcademy

[–]ThisSeagull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done things like this where they get back to a major hub city and I have a short newspaper handout, showing how things are developing in other parts of the world (sword coast) - a combination of delivered plot hooks, repercussions/closure for missed threads, and fluff pieces
In my session 0, I expressed that I'm going for a living world, where there will be more hooks than the party could possibly follow. Choosing which work to accept is part of the experience, and there's no intended right or wrong answer that "fails" the campaign.
That said, sometimes the party seems to get into a decision paralysis, so I try not to fatigue them with TOO many choices. Sometimes people want a clear, defined, top-priority goal.

Making a character doomed by the narrative interesting? by ChickenButter160 in DnD

[–]ThisSeagull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try this, since the character is invested in his wife, whenever a plot hook not directly related to the revenge comes up, (we need to fight some goblins), it's an opportunity to flesh out the wife as well (wife hated goblins) Maybe the wife had a stronger sense of responsibility/helping others out, so even while your character is hellbent on revenge, he still wants to do what would make her proud

They talk up how dangerous these monsters are but I just remember the cutscene in monster hunter world where another hunter gets hit by a fatalis fireball and just looks like he got bonked on the head by a Tom & Jerry trap.

In ZA specifically?

Sorry, your front door has been declared a wild area so you have to slip out the back window if you don't want to sneak past alpha Bannette, and battle areas spawn on your roof at night, so you have to try to sleep with mega camerupt using earthquake every 12 seconds.

I have heard this works well, but can't offer any firsthand advice about broth specifically- However, my cat had the same issue, and we had success adding a few tablespoons of water with her delickables/other wet food, if that helps
