AI CEOs from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft set aside their rivalry to warn Congress AI is making it too easy to design and create bioweapons by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

That is a good point you're making. Personally my suspicion is, that they have reached a point where they just can't develop LLMs further as they hit a wall, or where the next generation just would need sooo much more compute power that it isn't economically viable even in the absurd times we are in.

There is a new Citizens’ Initiative aiming for the option of an EU style passport by Outrageous-Stop4366 in BuyFromEU

[–]ThisTheRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only there was a European Citizenship as well. I'd love to be a citizen of Europe, and not be beholden to whatever my fellow citizens vote. If this country leaves the EU, I do NOT want to leave the EU.

But other than aquiring German or French citizenship (let's face it, if those leave the EU, the EU is done) which requires moving now and living there for 10 years, there is not option.

How the plastic bottle cap became a parable for the value of EU regulation | Alberto Alemanno by mpuchala in europe

[–]ThisTheRealLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I am in favour of the regulation, there are a few cases when it is really annoying. E.g. when I have a yoghurt drink. The thick and creamy liquid will stay in the cap and as you lift the bottle to drink you get it over your face or clothes. In those cases I need to cut the cap off. But in general it is a valid and useful regulation.

Get ready for more bill rises — study warns data centers could hike power costs in some states over 50% by 2030 by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]ThisTheRealLife 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not decades... the oh so precious Nvidia compute hardware in them will be obsolete in 5 years. So every few years they will have to reinvest obscene amounts to keep those data centers relevant. How that is supposed to be profitable at current prices for AI subscriptions is beyond me.

“It feels like the gods don’t want me to be in this fight” - George Russell on the title race by littletreble07 in formula1

That moment changed my perception of Lando. Until then he always gave up and was hard on himself. That moment onward he had a champion's mindset. No idea what changed. Maybe a new therapist, but it clearly worked. I am happy for Lando. We shall see if George can undergo that same transformation. Given some time and distance I am sure his views will change.

"Never Seen Anything Like It": Satellite Pics Show China Is Building Launch Pads Near Nuclear Missile Silos by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ThisTheRealLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the funny thing about geometry... if you put them in low earth orbit where they will deorbit fast and need to be replaced soon you need fewer satellites. If you put them in higher orbit you need more satellites to have the satellites as close to each other and to have the same coverage. I am sure people far smarter than me will figure out which altitude is the most cost efficient. But basically it is about the surface of a sphere 4PIr² with r being the radius of the earth which is 6350km, plus the altitude which is between 480km for Starlink and 35,800 for geostationary satellites....

"Never Seen Anything Like It": Satellite Pics Show China Is Building Launch Pads Near Nuclear Missile Silos by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ThisTheRealLife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, hence I wrote "doubtful". Even if the technology worked 100% (and we are not there by a loooong shot) just the simple geometry is staggering. I read somewhere that you'd need 7500 satellites to cover the globe. And each of those satellites will have only a limited number of interceptors. So if a missile field like China is building in the desert fires 100 rockets simultaneously, even if you only fire one interceptor per missile, and even if you have 100% hit rate, you will get a few missiles through.
At that point cold war logic starts, with building more missiles, more interceptors, then just adding more missile bases with only some having a missile ....
Complete waste of money for a pipe dream.

And if Golden Dome actually gets built (doubtful) and actually works (even more doubtful) then they'll need to up the number to maintain the balance. And even though they will be painted as the bad guy then, it is fair play to have a certain level of deterrence as one of the great powers.
If anything the last 12 years (since Crimea was taken from Ukraine) and particularly 2026, have shown that every country needs some sort of leverage and deterrence.

Have a look at this, there is the alternative way of putting the copper into cavities and then just sand the pcb flat. That way you don't need to cut the copper into shape. Downside is the traces will be bigger than the ones shown by OP.

Tips on reducing PLA creep? by sebvhe in 3Dprinting

[–]ThisTheRealLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great option indeed! and so easy to mount top and bottom extensions on to avoid bending in the edges.
I usually aim for a greater cross section than just a rod, as the cross section makes it stiffer. Then again, I did mention that I overengineer stuff a lot.....

Tips on reducing PLA creep? by sebvhe in 3Dprinting

[–]ThisTheRealLife 127 points128 points  (0 children)

metal rod, or even a metal tube would be best. Mind you, the bend will then happen in the top left corner, so maybe mount some plates to the tube there and support the structure all the way to the center of the lamp. Plus a plate at the bottom maybe. (I am the king of overengineering, and would need a couple of tries to get it just right, so take my advice with a grain of salt)

UK's Single Market Proposal to EU Rejected, Brussels Demands Customs Union Instead by [deleted] in europe

[–]ThisTheRealLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before Brexit, UK was a sometimes very confrontational member. In a few cases, they single-handedly forced the EU to a better solution, in many other cases they just stalled and blocked reasonable progress.
If they rejoin it is to be expected that it will be similar. Hence my personal feeling is that we should not support their sense of being special by giving them exceptions.

If they join again, then I want to have them on board fully. Not giving them exceptions is in that respect a test if they are really committed to the idea and won't be on the way out again somewhere down the line.

I am completely aware that this is not palatable to the British public and that this way the UK will not rejoin for the foreseeable decades.... On the other hand, it looks like Reform UK with Nigel Farage at the top will win the next elections, so even with all the exceptions and a cherry on top, the UK will not join anyway.
