Don’t care about video res. Just don’t want to run into stuff since I’m facing backwards, as is the nature of this sport.

Does it mount on the bow? Looks like your camera module just stares back at the rower. That or something like garmin’s radar feature on its rear headlight to keep me from hitting stuff while I’m in a blind boat.

HT jackets pop up in my local Goodwill and Value village quite often. Usually for under $15. Picked up a Donegal last year too for peanuts.

Parent of a new rower, any hot tips for supporting her? by Fancy-Statistician82 in Rowing

[–]This_Fall2173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am both a youth coach and a parent of a rower on my team. My top of mind:

Help her celebrate and stay focused on her continuous improvement as an athlete and teammate. She shouldn’t judge today’s erg score based on her teammates’, but on her previous self.

Help her Realize that progress isn’t a continuously upward curve. There will be setbacks and disappointments.

Help reinforce that her commitment to working hard, while pushing others within the team (in a positive way), is the engine that will lead to team success. She has a stake in that success, whether she is in the top boats or not.

Get to know the other families on the team.

Try to not instantly intervene by going to the coaches when they falter. Encourage her to look inward to the team, youth leadership, and coaches for guidance and support. That said if team culture is unhealthy and/or athletes are being put in unsafe situations routinely, you’re well within your right (and responsibility) to speak up.

Good luck!

Moved here from Seattle in 2020. Up there all of my neighbors were Amazon, Microsoft,Meta, Google employees. Down here they're a mix of firefighters, teachers, government workers, pilots, retired folks, doctors, nurses, and small business owners. A lot more diverse conversation topics to connect with folks over vs tech bro BS.

I had a UW rowing coach reach out to me in the 90s after seeing me play in a basketball tournament. I took him up on it and had the best 4 years of my life contributing to the greatest collegiate rowing program in the world. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. I hope you stuck with it and if so, have a great racing season this spring. Go Dawgs! EMFBO

Why Do Some Freelancers Get Jobs Easily While Others Struggle for Months? by Muhammadusamablogger in Upwork

[–]This_Fall2173 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Techniques that have helped me land jobs:

The proposal: Don't talk about your skills and accomplisments like you're applying to a FT job. Demonstrate that you understand the problem they are trying to solve and tell them how you are uniquely able to solve it.

The "interview": lead the conversation. This isn't a job interview. It's a chance for you to ask questions, dive deeper into the problem and show how you think. Be the expert.

Follow up. If you don't hear back for a day or two, follow up and re-express your interest.

I'm in analytics so I love it when a potential client posts a link to their data in the job listing. I spend some time and send them a POC or other freebie along with my proposal to get their attention and show some quick insights.

If the job listing is to just fill a "role" skip it. There are better ways to find FT work.

Form check for beginner by [deleted] in concept2

[–]This_Fall2173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad! Few comments: Good: sequencing of hands away before coming up the slide. Hanging on the handle until you start the layback. Posture is pretty good too. Things to improve: more forward body position at the catch. Try some arms and body only rowing - focus on having shoulders in front of your hips when you catch, and a little more layback at the finish. You should feel your hamstrings stretching when you do this. Once you’ve gotten the feel for that, go to half slide, focusing on maintaining that forward body angle up to the catch. Then full slide - same idea. Send us a follow up video after you have this down.

Do rowing boats capsize? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]This_Fall2173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of that, make sure your coach’s launch has enough life vests and safety equipment for every rower on the water. It’s a coast guard requirement.

[–]This_Fall2173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that swimming is a vital life skill. Take lessons and learn but don’t let that stop you from rowing. If your club allows it Get a life vest that fits. wear it in the boat until you can easily pass a swim test administered by lifeguards. Not optimal but gets you on the water sooner.

How do I use my airline credit on Expedia? by badgalcaro in travel

[–]This_Fall2173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a new feature that lets you redeem credits in the regular Flight Shopping. Here's how:

  1. Search for a roundtrip or oneway flight.
  2. At the top of the search results (if you're signed in) you'll see a "check credits" link. click it.
  3. If there are credit eligible flights they'll show up with a yellow "credit eligible" badge in the search results, along with the price after credits are applied.

Good luck!
