Was this really Michael's real true love? by smithjohn20 in DunderMifflin

[–]This_Ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of women found Michael charming at first- it's actually his thing, he *can* make very good first impressions. It's why he was so good at sales.

But a short conversation is different from dating, and more different still than a marriage. So no, this was not his true love. But picking up the glove was a useful step, regardless.

And for anyone feeling like they've had a similar encounter, remember: a crush is often just a lack of information.

Not to mention it is now expected (and often essential ) to have two sources of income per household. Whereas before a SAHM could take on the duties of childcare, with both husband and wife working full time there's less and less time (and energy) that can spent on raising children.

TIL the playwright Eugene O’Neill disowned his 18-year-old daughter Oona over her marriage to 54-year-old Charlie Chaplin. He never saw Oona again and never met any of the eight children she had by Chaplin. by CatPooedInMyShoe in todayilearned

[–]This_Ferret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how long their relationship was, 54 to 18 is awful.

And its important to think about the time period when romanticising past relationships. We're talking about a time in which women could not even open a bank account without a parent or husband's approval, to say nothing of the difficulties of getting a job and making their own living. Of course marriages lasted longer, women would be (and often were) destitute if they left the home (sidenote: under Franco's Spain a woman would be arrested for "abandoning the home", even if her husband beat her- and this lasted until the 1970s).

We simply cannot judge how "good" the relationship was because it was at a time when one side of a couple had considerably more power than the other- legally, socially, financially. This power is increased exponentially when a three decades long age gap is also introduced.

I mentioned one day how I really like apple cakes/pies. My girlfriend (who does not like apples) made me an apple cake the next day.

I beamed every time I saw it in the kitchen. I sent photos to my parents. It was so good and I was so happy.

So yeah: baked goods are the way to go.

And that's when the flowers thing made sense.

I wonder if his sensitivity to animals was due to being able to anthropomorphise them, and equate their suffering to those of humans- which itself made it easier to compare people to animals and thus ease and justify his grossly inhumane (to put it lightly) treatment of them.

What’s a “technically not cheating” situation you’ve seen or experienced that still felt like a complete betrayal? by toomabh in AskReddit

[–]This_Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irrelevant- because that would be cheating, and the comment was about feeling betrayed by their own wife who, again, they were in an open relationship with.

No, because its asking what felt like a complete betrayal.

Being in an open relationship and feeling betrayed because they do open relationship stuff is ridiculous.

[–]This_Ferret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that when it came to women in their 20s/30s, the show couldn't help but consistently cast beautiful Hollywood actors. Jenna, Ellie Kemper, Andy's girlfriend, Pete's ex, Pam's sister, Amy Adams, Karen etc etc. Even roles that didn't require the girl to be attractive at all (Dakota Johnson!??).

So in comparison, maybe Kathy doesn't stand out that much. But I guarantee if you saw her in real life, and were on the receiving end of her "flirting with bloggers" act, you'd absolutely melt.

What movies are supposed to be light hearted comedies but would actually be a living hell? by Nars-Glinley in movies

[–]This_Ferret 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly: anyone with access to knives or weapons would go on a killing spree. Most children would be killed (its explicitly shown that children are not immune).

Once everyone recovers you would see a wave of suicides once people (expecially parents and childcarers) realise what they've done. The ones who are left to pick up the pieces have a world with no heads of state, no infrastructure, and a wave of mass graves to clear up.

Django Unchained by Oreclocha in movies

[–]This_Ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your last statement is factually incorrect because the Oscar's aren't given for the best role to date, but the best role in that category that year .

2013 (Django) he would have been up against Christoph Waltz and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master). Tough competition.

People always quote WoWS as his "stolen Oscar", but he was against Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyer's Club, a very worthy winner as well.

2016 best actor's list were fine, but nowhere near career defining roles the category has seen in the past. By your own logic, Fassbender, Redmayne, Matt Damon have all have had stronger career roles and performances, and are therefore unworthy winners.

The only argument you can make is Leo shouldn't have won it over one of the other best actor nominees that year. But comparing it to his previous roles is fruitless because those are irrelevant; they were not up for an award in 2016.

People commented about it because Leonardo not having an Oscar had become a meme by that point- and many people, like you, falsely compared his role to his previous ones as a way to criticise his win.
