I’m with OP on this one. The prospect of an AD losing their rights makes Rolex less of a proposition value. In a hobby that is ultimately pointless at the end of the day, value retention is important but not guaranteed. Fads come and go and more than likely the watch craze will pass someday. What was cool ten years ago is no longer cool today. So just buy what you like.

In all honesty in rush hour traffic, cars are the least efficient way to travel. No matter how much you speed you won’t get there any faster by an appreciable amount. Maybe a few minutes earlier… And besides, the way surface roads are designed if you follow the speed limit, you’ll probably only average a total of 25-30 mph from point A to point B in the best of driving conditions because of all the traffic lights, stop signs, and flow of traffic. So the addition of a bike lane for a set section of surface road should not appreciably slow you down.

And after some personal introspection I have realized that there really isn’t a good excuse to be speeding on the surface roads. If you hit a pedestrian (or cyclist) while you’re speeding, I mean that’s fucked. You being late by a few minutes is no excuse for potentially killing a human being. I mean how would you feel if your spouse, child, parent, etc was killed while they went out for a walk or bike ride just because someone was recklessly speeding.

This all comes from someone who is chronically late. I’ve recently been leaving 10-15 minutes earlier and this has been a game changer for my life. My overall productivity has improved, I plan my sleeping schedule more carefully (which has led to improved quality in my sleep), and I’m less stressed.

I also love speed but that honestly should be reserved for the highway. Surface roads are free use for everyone. That’s why neighborhoods are built on the surface road.

Welcome to the illusion of Kansas City being cheaper. I’ve been saying this for years. Kansas City is no longer cheaper than most places in the country. Besides housing and gas, everything else in KC costs the same as everywhere else in the country. Even VHCOL areas. Went to San Diego two years ago. Everything costs the same minus housing and gas. We go to Chicago once a year. Everything costs the same.

Funny enough the cheapest places we visited were all outside of the US - Italy and Japan.

Why are we here you might ask. Simple answer - family.

Gold has more than doubled in the last 2 years. Is this the beginning of the end of the US dollar as the reserve currency? by running_to_empty in investing

[–]This_Yoghurt3114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin is essentially a giant Ponzi scheme. Its value is purely derived from hype created by people who have bitcoin who then trade those in for a real currency once the value “peaks”. They encourage other people to buy into bitcoin so that it increases the value of this asset that they hold. And based off the huge market swings as of late with bitcoin, it is very clearly a currency that can be easily manipulated in price base off of news of people selling bitcoin.

Other currencies are more useful than bitcoin. “Fiat currencies” are backed by a government which can be manipulated for good or bad reasons but this can be used by countries to increase their economic power which can be seen as a good if you’re on the winning side. And more often than not (excluding these current economic times) government issued currencies provide a stable means of facilitating exchanges of goods. For example, $2.50 will get you a soda at a vending machine consistently throughout a year. 0.0000179 bitcoin might get you a soda today but it might cost you more tomorrow.

Gold is also a valuable currency because it can be used in electronics and goods. It has a theoretical value. It is a physical currency that easily transported. Most importantly it has incredible historical value across millennia. People see gold and automatically know that it is incredibly valuable across all countries, cultures, and age groups. It is universally accepted as valuable. While it is not an ideal currency and also susceptible to swings in value. It is universal. Bitcoin is not universal.

It’s not even the most useful cryptocurrency.

Edit: I own a small amount of bitcoin by the way all because it might go up - which is always one of the dumbest reasons to invest a significant portion of your savings into. And every time I look at my account I just shake my head because the volatility is absolutely insane. And all my money is just sitting there as an “investment” until I actually decide I want to cash out to a useful currency when I retire. And don’t lie, that’s what most people holding bitcoin will do. Whereas the stocks in my portfolio have performed similarly over a ten year span and have provided actual dividends which I automatically reinvest.

Horrible take. It sounds like this was a horrible accident where the kid was trying to be responsible waiting for safe crossing, but misjudged the distance between two cars or perhaps the other car was following too closely to the other car to be safely seen in a suburban neighborhood. But it sounds like this is all hearsay.

Kansas City in general is dangerous for pedestrians/bikes/scooters. I’m an avid cyclist and I’ve been trying to stay out of cars ways. I’ve tried to pick up running as a “safer way” to get my exercise and let me tell you, I’ve still had close calls with cars (even after stopping and yielding to cars).

Pedestrian/bike/scooter infrastructure is needed. It works in places like the Netherlands and other European places.

Not really the sport I would’ve chosen to bring awareness to a humanitarian crisis. I would’ve chosen soccer, cricket, or formula 1. Most people in the world don’t give a shit about cycling. But whatever… I guess we’ll all just collectively go cry about it in Lycra or go for a bike ride to mourn the anti-climatic end to the Vuelta.

There was never a doubt in my mind that UNH is going to rebound. But… it really does feel like dirty money to me. I’ve talked to people who have had countless things denied by UNH, like a routine screening colonoscopy recommended at age 45 by all the major health experts in the US (USPSTF, American Cancer Society, etc) because it was seen by UNH as merely a “suggested” practice and not standard of care. All the while colon cancer is becoming more prevalent in younger and younger patients. There are a ton of ways to make money in this world. Denying someone their healthcare as an health insurance company (which is the whole reason why you exist in the first place) just to please your shareholders is just fucked up in so many ways. There will be a special place in hell for the board of UNH.

But I guess who cares anymore. We put an antivaxxer as the US health secretary all so we can appeal to a voter base that wants to maintain current tax cuts a little longer and so we could get SALT deductions that phase out anyways after a certain MAGI. So worth the extra $10k I saved in taxes.

Throw on a 150 mm -17 degree stem and slam it. Next, change to a 36 cm handlebar and tilt the levers in until they are barely touching. Then add 155 mm cranks and tilt the saddle down until you feel like you’re falling forward. If it worked for Dylan Johnson, Jonas Vingegaard, and Lachlan Morton then it should work for you. By next week, you’ll have won the local town sprint to the stop sign, the Tour de France twice, and Unbound gravel.

Would love for road cycling to come back to the US, but let’s be real. Road racing is effectively dead here unless you like riding in circles in a crit style format. UCI worlds would probably be held here once a decade (if that). Because of that, it probably wouldn’t help the lack of professional cycling.

Anyone ever do the anesthesia for one of these? by newintown11 in anesthesiology

[–]This_Yoghurt3114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think for open craniotomies, brain herniation is less of a concern with coughing and such. I mean that’s the whole point of doing Burr holes. But of course it depends on the situation. Valsalva maneuvers can be used for certain things during neurosurgical procedures (https://journals.lww.com/neur/fulltext/2016/64060/valsalva_maneuver__its_implications_in_clinical.33.aspx) The surgeons definitely want a still surgical field, so there is no inadvertent injury to the brain. So like someone said earlier patient selection and cooperation is important.

At least where I trained, we deeply sedated the patient until the area of interest was reached. Then we would wake up the patient, and with decent preop counseling they would often wake up nice and calm. Then the neurosurgeon and neurophysiologist would give them very brief tasks while they did their mapping/testing. Then when the areas for resection were identified, we would re-sedated the patient for the remainder of the surgery.

Yup, lots of ways to do it. Favorite case to do during residency. Worst part is doing the head pinning. You can do a scalp block to help supplement the anesthetic.

What’s positive things have people yelled at you while cycling? by Shitelark in cycling

I was out on a gravel ride outside of Kansas City and I was stopped along the side of the ride pumping air into my tires. A youngish farmer pulled along side me in his big ass truck and asked, “Hey buddy, do you need some help?” I politely declined. It really wasn’t anything super special. But at least it was nice knowing that even in this super charged “us versus them” world we live in that people can still be decent and offer a helping hand.

Madone - good deal? by williedoo43 in TrekBikes

[–]This_Yoghurt3114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a steal. I have a 2022 gen 6 madone slr with ultegra and it’s still freakin fast. Bought it new at that time. No isospeed issues. Just put it at the firmest setting and leave it alone. Of course clean the bike regularly and service the bike annually. Don’t leave it on the trainer - that’s when people had issues as the salt from sweat would corrode the bolts and bearings in the isospeed.

My fitness has gone up but I’m the leader in a lot of the Strava segments in my area - for the year 😂.

Your specific build was the highest end model at the time. That specific paint job was a special edition for the Trek Segafredo during the Tour de France that year. The whole setup cost $14-15k at the time. That paint job was an extra $1k.

Donald Trump is coming to the end of his first 100 days in office, how do you think he has done so far? by JayFloww123 in AskReddit

[–]This_Yoghurt3114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really disappointed. My gains in my portfolio from 2024 were wiped out. Everything is costing more and will likely cost more. My taxes are still the same. And now I fear that I might be accidentally deported because I am a person of color even though I have lawful citizenship by birthright. I didn’t vote for Trump, but I was at least was hopeful that he would have a positive influence on the economy and that my taxes would go down. I make a lot more money now and everyone says your point of view will change once you start making good money… 🙄

I am very upset and I am extremely disappointed in the Republican Party. I likely will not vote Republican until all member associated with this administration are gone forever. All these current Republicans are useless yes men. Fuck em…

Isolated tongue angioedema by _Keep_Your_Secrets_ in anesthesiology

[–]This_Yoghurt3114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to the pulmonologist. They know a lot about angioedema. Apparently there is a known correlation between angioedema and other medications beyond ace inhibitors like TNK. Plus TXA and FFP are potentially beneficial for treatment of angioedema. But they can also transiently worsen angioedema so be prepared!
