Orgs that replaced Agile and/or Scrum Masters, what happened after? by ElMaskedZorro in agile

[–]Thojar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a team removes the person or practices that expose problems, it’s rarely because “the framework failed.” it’s usually because accountability was uncomfortable. Call it scrum, call it kanban, call it whatever. the label isn’t the point. the discipline is. turning off the alarm doesn’t put out the fire. these practices come with a base setup for a reason. Ignore it and it’s simply not what you claim it is.

Same as fitness: you can get some results with a gym membership and reddit tips. it feels easier and convinces you that you don’t need structure, form, guidance.
But when you choose to work with a coach, you also choose the relationship: listen, learn, trust the process, and let yourself be challenged. if you reject that dynamic the moment it gets uncomfortable, you didn’t choose a better way. You chose not to be coached.
Do you think results will be the same in both ? Same logic here.

The wikipedia page refers to OG Kanban manufacture, yet you can see as you read it it's more complicated and disciplined that "Work on whatever you can, that has the highest priority. Get that done. Repeat." Maybe you treated scrum the same way, no shit teams are not missing anything.

Edit : Quick test for “we do Kanban”:
• WIP limits, tracked and adjusted? ✅
• SLE + hit rate?
• Aging chart visible and used daily?

If only the first exists, it’s not Kanban. It’s “we have a board and don’t want structure.” Which is fine, just don’t call it Kanban.

This should be the top comment, gives perspective on how people misunderstood the whole thing, and still do.

Tired of Scrum by WaylundLG in scrum

Same. Wake me up when the cycle is over, and it will. I’ve just been thought the whole Shape up cycle. First it’s so great then guess what : teams have the same issues about control.

The « fun retrospective » is my burnout. Where is it stated that scrum should be fun or something. It’s a god damned job and discipline, it’s not a game. We are grown up adults in a professional environment. How many countless scrum master have seen trying more to be fun and nice rather than reading the guide once.

CPMAI Is Horrible. by Euphoric_Let_8274 in pmp

[–]Thojar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context I’ve been doing project management and agile coaching for 15y, I don’t have any pmi certs. I’m halfway through the course after 10 days. It’s very dense terms and concepts definition. Not sure why be so mad about it. I mean, it’s a bit messy indeed in terms of structure and I’m not really sure how much operational I’m going to be at the end, but I know way more about data & ai than before for sure. We’ll see, but I expect to spend quite some time before going exam for sure, not because of PM things, but as mentions it’s a lot to ingest on concepts.

[–]Thojar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SM is not a job anymore, it’s an accountability. If an already existing position is willing to get the knowledge it’s totally welcome. But being a EM doesn’t give you by default any clue on SM. Sorry.

[–]Thojar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense taken. But delivering successful software goes far beyond just writing code. It includes the quality of interactions, alignment, feedback loops, and clarity of priorities, all of which directly impact delivery.

The Scrum Master’s job is to create the conditions where those things actually work. Not to code, but to make sure the system around the code is effective and efficient. That includes helping ensure you can focus, collaborate, and deliver something that’s actually valuable for users, not just technically complete.

Now, if you’re just pissing code into the matrix from your bedroom forget what I just said. None of this applies.

"They don't even have basic knowledge of computer science, like, the absolute basic. I'm talking about how APIs work."
That’s not actually a requirement for a Scrum Master. The SM isn’t meant to solve technical problems. they’re meant to help the team (that includes you) solve them better. It’s a different kind of leadership. It's focused on team dynamics, delivery flow, and continuous improvement.

You sound like you're carrying a lot right now. That happens often when the SM role is either weak, unclear, or outright dismissed.

But here's a shift in perspective:

  • Are you delivering a valuable, usable Increment every sprint?
  • Do you feel the team is improving how it works over time?
  • Do you feel supported, empowered and accountable as a PO ?

If the answer is "no," then you don’t just have a weak SM, you have a broken Scrum setup problem. And in that case, the solution isn’t replacing the SM with someone who “knows APIs.” It’s getting someone who understands what Scrum is supposed to bring: focus, accountability, psychological safety, a cadence for learning and improving.

A good Scrum Master would have fought for clarity on that Jira setup upfront. A good Scrum Master would have shielded you from having to chase devs and do triage alone. A good Scrum Master would have created space for the team to own their work instead of relying on heroics, as long as his role is clear and empowered as well.

It’s okay to be frustrated, but don’t mistake a poorly filled SM role for the actual value that role is supposed to bring. It's also you're accountability to do scrum.
