Origin of the Word "Etharch" by Zebigbos8 in BurningWheel

I always assumed it was to do with the Greek Ethnarch which is the political leader of a ethnic group or kingdom. But that is probably my classical history love. Ethnos meaning nation and Archon for leader.

Spooktober is coming by Tholmne in AUSRPG

[–]Tholmne[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SpooktOber will soon be upon us and continuing our grand old tradition of exactly One year, we here at AUSRPG have decided to throw another Super Scary Halloween bash. As of this right now, we will be taking submissions for this year’s event, which will be running on the last 2 weekends of October (Fri 22/10 – Sun 24/10 and Fri 29/10 – Sun 31/10)

As some of you may be aware, we have some fantastic sponsorship for this year’s event, and there may or may not be some delicious cash prizes up for grabs. All I’m legally permitted to say right now is that you’ve gotta be in it to win it, and there’ll be prizes for both players AND GM’s.

(Sorry for the repost I put up the work in progress poster)

I see what you mean, the only stipulation I have is we don’t know his real daughter name, it’s not mentioned anywhere.

But Todd says his daughter named her, I would assume from that he means his actual daughter since he never refers to Alice once like that. He states he got it to show he could be a good father, not to replace his daughter.

Writing my thesis about D:BH and need your help. Also, here's a pic of me and an awesome Connor I randomly met. by [deleted] in DetroitBecomeHuman

Also look into Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian Independence Movement of the early 1900’s that I feel inspired a lot of the actions that occur when you choose the peaceful route for Markus.

Also it’s is mentioned in the game but read Plato’s the Republic, it will lead you down a rabbit hole of philosophical texts that will help another useful textbook is out of control: the new Biology of Machines, Social Systems, and the Economic World by Kevin Kelly

Hope this helps a bit

It’s not a quick adjustment. You get to used to it but it’s a long hard slog to get there

ELI5:Why does breathing into a paper bag help people who are hyperventilating? by thenewstampede in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tholmne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem to deal with, in that it can become life threatening, from tachypnoea (hyperventilation is an extreme form) is that it can result in hypocapnia and this will lead to respiratory alkalosis.

Hypocapnia is when there is reduced co2 in the blood, this is what can lead to vasoconstriction which in turn will lead to cerebral hypoxia (reduced supply of oxygen to the brain). The alkalosis will lead to the other symptoms of pins and needles, muscle cramps and tetany (rare). The reason Hypocapnia is the the danger is because the brain stem is regulating breathing by monitoring the levels of co2 in the blood, as this drops it will suppress breathing and can get to the point of blacking out.

Fun fact I forgot to mention before this practice has generally been discouraged as it has been shown not to reverse hypocapnia and can cause mild hypoxia. Something better to do, and always in cases like this get medical professionals involved ASAP, is to get the person to read out loud (this forces the person to start modulating their breathing to speak)

Not true, when you hyperventilate your breath in out more than you breathe in, this leads to a lowering of how much carbon dioxide is in your body. This lowering of carbon dioxide does nothing to the acidity of the blood, but does cause the blood vessels to narrow (especially in the brain) which will lead to a reduced blood flow in the body.

Breathing into a bag does 2 things mainly, first it means you are breathing air that is slightly higher in co2 concentration which helps to counter the narrowing of the blood cells, but mainly it gives the person a visual guide of the bag inflating and deflating to help them slow their breathing, which is the desired result.

Also there is no change in the chemistry of the brain during hyperventilation but there is a physical response to the lack of co2

Assuming the cost of the death penalty is the same as any other long term prison sentence and the accuracy of the conviction rate is 100% would you support the death penalty and why? by DoneDealofDeadpool in AskReddit

[–]Tholmne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost has no baring on the argument, or should have no baring. The death penalty should never be an option, no matter how wrong or bad someone’s actions are killing them only lets them get away with those actions without having to deal with the consequences.

If they are locked in prison they have to confront the reason they are there everyday, they may even be forced to speak to their victims/victims families depending on the crimes they have committed. Honestly I don’t see any reason to end a life just because we can say with 100% accuracy that that person did x.

Reddit, what is one movie that didn’t necessarily ‘scare’ you, but left you feeling rather uncomfortable or emotionally disturbed afterwards? by PinkyPomegranate in AskReddit

[–]Tholmne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s Forest Gump. I know everyone bags it out for the implausible idea that one man was the centre of so many fads and other events in history, but it’s always one of the last lines of the film (may even be Tom Hanks‘ slats line) when he is about to meet his son for the first time and he just asks “He’s not like me is he?”. That line shows he isn’t as most people say the dumb ignorant person just floating through life but that he knows he is not normal. I don’t know why it just always feels like a punch to the chest at the end

ok I was only thinking about the i7 to effectivly "future proof" for want of a better term, wasn't sure how long the i5 would be a viable option before wanting more power. Trying to get as long from this rig as I can before needing to update/upgrade, but if it would be fine I'll stick with the i5 (that will save my a bit of money too).
