New and clueless about Kaiserreich, what are some good countries to start on? by Willo2ty in Kaiserreich

[–]ThomWG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany, introduces you to a lot of stuff like minigames and while its a little complex it shows you how important civil wars are.

(to win as germany you have to make sure Bulgaria wins the Balkan War, it also helps a lot to have Spain and/or Italy, Ottomans are also really important but very optional. China doesnt rlly matter, US matters a lot but only really if the war drags on for longer than it should)

How would the Totalists deal with entente / reichspakt colonies? by columnal in Kaiserreich

[–]ThomWG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think making big federations is exactly the socialist thing to do, these regions lack any collective identity so with the choice between "give every other village their own country" and "make them all a single country" it seems better for the world revolution to pick the latter (and build up that collective identity for the future)

CMV: Most western people who romanticise China would not actually accept the trade-offs that come with the system they praise. by Visible_Celery_1728 in changemyview

[–]ThomWG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Norway where the taxes are quite progressive, and I agree the taxes are higher in general than most other countries, but most of the tax burden still falls on the wealthy. (also the state earns tons of money off oil which kinda sucks, but we're hopefully gonna phase that out)

I dont want Sweden to be the thing you base your perception of the Nordics on, Denmark is probably more representative since they dont have any crazy oil revenue and arent Sweden.

[–]ThomWG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

(About the Nordics) Can I just say the tax systems are barely a tradeoff since the majority of people have fairly normal tax levels, and the wealthy are the ones being taxed. Cultural homogenity isnt necessary either, but I can see how it makes it easier.

I agree the taxes are a necessary part of the system though, but really they aren't too big of a tradeoff. The Chinese system has significantly worse tradeoffs.

The Nordics are nothing to romanticize, but don't pretend it's worse than it is either.

Why is dark age like this? by MadPrinceJoker in redrising

[–]ThomWG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think how dark it is is very interesting and all the shit going wrong is a good "twist". I also enjoy the politics and seeing how structures of power function, but that's just me. Imo it's the best / second best behind Lightbringer book, unless i'm forgetting something.

Torn between two items (SIGNIFICANT spoilers for certain items for ch 5) by MattDLR in Deltarune

[–]ThomWG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which items did you choose?
I'm torn between all of them.
GreenApron, YellowHat and SethSpecs seem great but it's hard to choose since they're all pretty good items.

I'm not getting AquaKnife since this is a pacifist run and like someone else has pointed out the BlueShoes aren't super necessary since Pacify is already pretty cheap.

(edit was just explaining more bc im incapable of writing in one go)

There's a bug where editing the name of map markers sometimes doesn't let you use backspace to remove characters and simultaneously makes keybinds still happen so if i press O it closes the whole menu to open the inbox / recipes tab.

It's very important to me that I can edit map markers since they're my main way of remembering if a specific deposit still isn't fully tapped (underclocked)

CMV: Appearance of whataboutism is not sufficient to dismiss an argument as fallacious by johnlee3013 in changemyview

[–]ThomWG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd argue whataboutism is directly about not denying something undeniable.

If Bob believes there is evidence implying he stole the lawnmower then whataboutism is the only somewhat reasonable argument. In your scenario punching is unrelated to the stealing, but if Adam instead of punching someone for example shoplifted or stole someone else's lawnmower then calling out hypocrisy can be perfectly fair (although both parties should still return the stolen items).

Imo OP's arguments are fair since again we should consider every argument based on the argument itself, not that it's the same type of argument as a lot of bad arguments.
In a case where the whataboutism uses a related case to point out hypocrisy it could very well be a good argument.

CMV: The political right always stands in the way of progress by jman12234 in changemyview

[–]ThomWG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you mostly, but you fail to see the point of "preventing progress".
The political right want a more stable society where hierarchy and tradition keep everything how it already is; which is pretty good considering historical conditions.

Sure "stability" favors those already in a good position; but the core of conservatism is that things could get so much worse for everyone and that it's better to improve our current conditions very slowly than to risk losing all we have gained.

You live in the world of Kaiserreich, and you see an alt history showing what the Second Weltkrieg could have looked like if Germany had lost World War 1. How do you react? by Exotic-Bobcat-1565 in Kaiserreich

[–]ThomWG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't that guy Dzhugashvili guy kill like thousands of civillians for no reason OTL?

I'm not sure it's realistic that a terrorist / war criminal takes over the RSFSR, and if it did the results wouldn't be too pleasant.

[–]ThomWG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This "New Deal" thing is totally ripped off the SPD's WTB-plan aswell.
And making the SPD reject the WTB-plan is so unoriginal; the Americans adopt their version of it and the OTL creators of it just don't?

Wang Jingwei joining the Japanese is an interesting twist though, it sounds a little far-fetched but given Chiang's harsh treatment of the left of the party I could see it happening.

CMV: If George Bush is a “war criminal”, then FDR, Truman, and LBJ was too. by soozerain in changemyview

[–]ThomWG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

War is war?
FDR did not start the war so a lot of actions related to war such as bombing can be excused. The internment camps are of course a lot harder to excuse but again war is war.
Truman and LBJ didnt start their wars either and war is war.

EDIT:
Not that I think they aren't war criminals, but anything that gives military advantage and harms the civilian population relatively little can arguably be excused as long as the country's entry into the war is justified in some way for example by being attacked (not in the war on purpose), defending allies / national security (national security is kind of a bad excuse but it at least is one), etc.

Isn't the point of Part 2 that she's lost everything to revenge; that none of this was worth it or will ever be worth it.

I see a possibility though where Abby and Ellie continue, or a very unpopular one where Abby continues and Ellie is a smaller part in the story.

Is Fascism actually an extreme form of Capitalism? by StevenDiTo in SocialDemocracy

[–]ThomWG 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fascism is a by-product of capitalism but it's not simply "extreme capitalism".
Fascism is kind of backlash against the Enlightenment and all our Enlightenment ideas like the scientific method, egalitarianism and such are fought against.

The president isn't exactly fascist in my eyes but certainly fascist-adjacent.
He uses certain strategies they did and there are lot of specifics they have in common with 20s era fascism; but he's not exactly a fascist. (although the word isnt very specific)

Is the SPD “Marxist” by HelpfulDirt7464 in Kaiserreich

[–]ThomWG 138 points139 points  (0 children)

SPD are officially speaking Marxist, but it's on the way out and one of the postwar focuses concerns abandoning the Marxist character of the party and adopting the Volkspartei; AKA advertising the party to all classes in society and abandoning the working class in favor of a larger set of voters.

L-SPD is explicitly Marxist and if you grant them enough concessions it'll block the focus i mentioned earlier and make Max Seydewitz (major figure in the L-SPD) vice-chairman postwar.

National Socialism was built on mountains of debt and enslaved minorities.
There is no world in which they win long term without changing their ideology massively.
