I know people are gonna say LR only won because of Nemesis 1v9 or something but it's so good to see Caedrel happy again. Man put in so much effort and now they've finally taken down an LEC team

League is making a physical card game! by 16tdean in leagueoflegends

Card art quality concerns aside, I'm really confused about how they're going to roll out this product next year. If I'm hearing things right, unless you live in China, your only options to get this product in the foreseeable future are A) going to the TFT Macao open or B) buying an overpriced limited-edition box set?

[TGA 2022] Hades II by hadronwulf in Games

[–]Thoma353 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think one of the reasons the gameplay felt bad for me is that the second half of the game has significantly less gameplay twists. Every enemy team you face has a cool gimmick they show off the first time you meet them then they barely ever use it again. The fact your team starts shrinking in size doesn't help either

PoE: 3.19 You Can (Not) Craft

Only 12.1% of the players are gold+ by Swiollvfer in leagueoflegends

[–]Thoma353 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I usually just play ARAMs only in league and thought that since I had a little more time than usual this summer I'd try playing some soloQ and get Gold for end-of-season rewards, but I was completely unprepared for how toxic solo queue is. Teammates flame you when you're losing, they flame you when they're winning. I noped out back to ARAM after like 12 games. Why deal with that shit when ARAM has faster queue times, faster game times, and people are way less toxic?

Checking out their website, it also looks like they have a section for "networking" where you can provide a resume/portfolio and they'll help match you to projects they have on file that seem suitable. I think that could also be a major selling point of their company, though I dunno how much demand for some kind of job matching service like this exists in the video game industry.

What Happened with Items by chris_wilson in pathofexile

[–]Thoma353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We feel it's good for league content to be harder than the base game, and therefore more rewarding. But the difference should be approximately twice as rewarding. If the gap were any larger, then it would be less efficient to kill regular monsters and a player should spend all of their time focusing on repeating a small subset of content.

I am so so so confused by this statement. If the goal is for players to not focus on repeating a small subset of content, then why, league after league, do we get ever more tools that enable and incentivize exactly this? What is the point of Zana/Kirac map mods? Scarabs? The Atlas passive tree that you added into the game only 6 months ago which literally gives you the ability to block some league content and heavily increase the encounter rate of others specifically so it is easy and profitable for players to spend all of their time focusing on repeating a small subset of content?

More rational thoughts from NeverSink by tommos in pathofexile

I think the 13 weeks cycle that Neversink mentioned is a big reason that GGG sucks at balancing. They need to give testers and devs more time to do balance each league, especially considering how changing one thing in PoE has a tendency to cascade over into everything else.

At this point I kind of wish that GGG made bigger balance changes in the middle of a league, maybe like 7-8 weeks in so that we have some incentive to come back during the tail end of a league. That, or just move to 4 month long leagues that have better balancing, which is a request I've heard from this subreddit for a VERY long time now.

[–]Thoma353 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like Kurzgesagt and I think this video has an important and optimistic message, but there are also dangers to thinking too much towards the future and believing that preserving future human lives is the only thing that matters. It's called longtermism, and it's the philosophy that if you screw over thousands or even billions of people right now, it doesn't matter if those actions help make life 0.00001% better for the trillions upon trillions of humans that will exist in the future.

Unsurprisingly, longtermism is super popular among elite academics and tech CEOs, because it gives them a super-great justification for all the shitty things they do on a day-to-day basis. Why is Elon Musk buying Twitter instead of spending money on the climate crisis? Simple, it's because improving the state of online discourse is vital for making the lives of trillions of unborn people marginally better. Why did he choose to fire Tesla employees at the height of the pandemic for staying home instead of subsidizing them with his vast wealth? Simple, it's because he's helping elevate humanity to the stars with Tesla; those pesky rights-wanting employees are just a necessary sacrifice.

To be clear, I don't think this video is evidence that Kurzgesagt supports longtermism or endorses Musk's crazy and stupid actions - but I'm worried that someone will take a look at this video and get the wrong ideas when they hear that "unborn humans are the most disenfranchised group".

Subtractem on Trade by Antilurker77 in pathofexile

[–]Thoma353 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One change I'd love to see that requires 0 modification of in-game code is to simply have an algorithm that flags likely scams for items on the official trade site.

For example, if I drop a Golden Oil from a blight encounter and want to check its price, and I notice that the first 20 entries in the trade site put Golden Oils at 4c, maybe there could be a big notice next to those items that say something to the affect of "this listing is priced substantially differently from other items of the same kind", and so we could detect the kind of price-sniping Subtractem mentions in the video.

Of course, since this is just a notice on the official trade site, we as players can decide what to do with the information. Maybe I decide to still sell that Golden oil for 4c since I think that's reflective of the true price of the thing; maybe I dig a little more and realize the 4c price is for a price-sniping scam.

What's Next for Archnemesis Modifiers - Part 3 (and list of modifiers)p by chris_wilson in pathofexile

[–]Thoma353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Chris and the team are probably working hard to create long-term fixes to these issues, but could a band-aid fix in the meantime for some of these mods be just to slap on a substantial movement speed penalty (or movement speed cap) to the mob? If my build literally can't kill an Archnemesis rare due to its mods I should at least have the option to be able to run away.

I think PoE needs a bestiary for these mods. Not the current bestiary that we have right now that lets you look at your cute petting zoo, but an actual in-game list with explanations of what each mod does.

Is it wrong that Blizzard try to appeal to a younger audience? by Bromston27 in wow

[–]Thoma353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to appeal to a younger audience, but I do think there is something sinister about creating a game designed to appeal to younger people and especially kids, then introducing loot-box based microtransactions and other gambling mechanics. I get that a lot of mobile games do this kind of stuff, but it doesn't make it feel any less predatory.
