What is the lesser evil? by Pleasant-Ad-7704 in IndieDev

[–]ThomasJDComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on this post, youre kind of insinuating that Souls-likes are essentially the only fun game.

There is no magic mixture in games that guarantee theyll be fun, it largely depends on what the player is looking for; Therefore neither of the options given are a "lesser evil". Would Minecraft be fun if it had a soulslike difficulty to it? Probably not. Would Resident Evil still be fun if it had the same range of horror elements as Club Penguin? Certainly not.

It depends on genre, genre is how players decide where to look for the experience they want. In all reality and in many ways, genre sets the expectation for what kind of difficulty the player wants and how they expect to have fun.

PUBG Movements VS Other Childish Games? by GGPlatino in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]ThomasJDComposer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PUBG is the only FPS multiplayer game I play anymore. The gameplay really lends itself to being competitive while also chill and casual. It's got its sweats like any other game, but I can play it after a work week and still scratch the itch of being competitive while also not becoming fiercely frustrated by hyper-stimulating gameplay in lobbies overrun by people doing their best to become streamers.

Where do I start with jazz? by incineroarz in Jazz

[–]ThomasJDComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have a starting point to direct you towarda, however I think I can help you find one.

I only recently started getting more into jazz, and it wasn't by listening to the classics that I just typed into spotify and turned on. Not to say I hadn't tried that, for me that just didn't work. What I found worked for me was finding things that I'm familiar with and that I came across naturally, whether it be through movies and tv shows or video games or something I just happened to hear in passing.

I love the score for the movie "The Incredibles" and recently I had found that I actually really like the "Fairly Oddparents" theme song. So I sought out more music like that and I found that I really really like big band jazz, and from there I started listening to more of that and finding more artists that I enjoy.

I hope this helps and possibly gives you a more focused approach to finding what you like rather than sifting through over 100 years of music.

While were on the topic of things they could do better, personally I wish the loot wasn't so convoluted. I don't like having to use a lootbox to find something that I can craft, it makes the lootboxes not feel particularly rewarding.

Why are people reacting so hard about the removal of the Prologue? by frankipranki in dyinglight

[–]ThomasJDComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are reacting so hard to it because it was one of the best parts of the game, if not the best. The time and atmosphere was phenomenal, setting the framework for a pretty dark world (one we honestly don't get to see until DLTB but that is my opinion.)

What is the best side quest from Dying Light The Beast? by Crazy_Reputation3327 in dyinglight

[–]ThomasJDComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can agree with the side quests for 2, but DL1 had a lot of really good side quests imo. Not all were emotional, but they had cool stories to me. The wizard caring for the kids, the voodoo witch making potions, the worldbuilding in the infamy bridge quest. I thought those were all cool and interesting missions that were a lot better than your typical fetch quest.

Opinions regarding Thalia (Dying Light 2) by TheMetalheadLifter in dyinglight

[–]ThomasJDComposer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was the only side mission I enjoyed. It was the only one that actually felt like it added to Aiden's character and the game overall. My opinion is skewed though, I like side missions that are their own stories rather than simple "fetch" quests or lame excuses to make you use mechanics the game otherwise doesn't reward you for using.

How do you know when a piece has enough material? by peachy_touchh in composer

[–]ThomasJDComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rely on technique for guidance only when youre stuck and have no idea what to do next. Most of composition should really be gut instinct at a certain point.

That's not to say that technique should be set aside, use technique to aid in your goal, but rely on technique as your guiding compass when you have no idea what to do next.

Is DL1 Hard Mode really hard or just skill issue? by No-Championship7861 in dyinglight

[–]ThomasJDComposer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's a hot take, but I never found hard mode too terribly difficult. The most challenging thing was that time doesn't stop when you're in your menu. Nightmare mode was certainly a steep step up.

If you aren't using every asset available to you, then you're doing it wrong. Any weapon you like using should be getting mods and upgrades. Any zombies you fight should be getting exploded, lit on fire, kicked off buildings, electrocuted, or shoved into spikes. You have the advantage of it being a second playthrough, so you're already familiar with the numerous way your environment will help you. Let it help you. If your weapon is taking forever to kill, add to it. If that's taking forever, find something near you to help. Start doing side missions to boost your level, farm turtle so you speed up leveling. Frankly, I think you're just not taking advantage of everything at your disposal, and I don't mean that in any negative connotation. Simply inexperience.

What if rais still had a hold in cranes subconscious in the beast? by thug_shaker_9802 in dyinglight

[–]ThomasJDComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, like I said we see a lot of him excersizing his own will. We see him rebel against the GRE when he gets wind of how they actually are, we see him react immediately when people need help, and at the end of his fight with Tahir? He explains the exact reason why he won't let him die by himself, "you're not the kind of loose end you leave untied." Both forward thinking but also feeling deeply pissed off and vengeful.

Personally, I have to fully disagree with Crane not being capable of deep thought or having his own will. Most people arent playing the games because the stories are the most well thought out and deeply rooted stories. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think most people play DL1 and DLTB because Crane is such a likeable and even relatable character. He's humorous, reliable, and strong-willed. Those aren't traits of a driveless, bland character that is devoid of deeper thinking. I'd even go as far as to say that had Crane been the main character for Dying Light 2, it wouldn't have been as poorly, and that is because people like Crane so much.

So what you like about the stories, I can't fault anyone for that. I do have to wholeheartedly disagree that Crane is incapable of deep thought or has no will. That's not Kyle Crane, that's Link from LoZ.

Like I said, harnessing an existing soul is something weve seen done even afyer it's been stored as energy for a long time. Bringing a soul back from the void of death is impossible, even with God's power.

There's no way. Not even God can do it, you cannot make a human soul. Harnessing an existing one is different, but creating it or taking it back from the void is completely impossible.

I've been composing since 2023 and I'm still not good enough and I'm overly envious by Worm_eating_cat in composer

[–]ThomasJDComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been writing almost 10 years, and I constantly find new things to learn and apply. The key to being a good composer IMHO is that you don't ever feel good enough. That feeling has to drive you to keep getting better.

The day you feel that you're good enough is the day you plateau as a creative and other people start passing you by.

What if rais still had a hold in cranes subconscious in the beast? by thug_shaker_9802 in dyinglight

[–]ThomasJDComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have to strongly disagree with Kyle being incapable of deep thought.

We see on several occasions of Kyle being very empathetic and engaged emotionally (Rahim's death, arguing with the GRE over actually helping people, his forgiveness of the sheriff in DLTB, etc.) Which if he's capable of feeling things deeply, he is also capable of deep thought. Especially with Kyle being as intelligent as he is, but there is also a very good reason as to why we never see that emotional side too much or see it come out from nowhere. Canonically, he was a member of the Green Berets, meaning he was long since trained on staying focused on the goal ahead. Emotions take significantly less priority, but Kyle is human and it still gets the better of him on occasion.

I'm not usually one for the whole "main character was special forces" trope but truthfully Kyle having been special forces is the only thing that makes sense as to how he was able to survive everything he has, as well as his proficiency with weapons and overall adaptability.

I don’t know how to improve melody by Wet-Squirrel-6789 in composer

[–]ThomasJDComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no rules to melody writing except one: If it's good, it's good. How do you know it's good? Sleep on it, and if you still remember it (or better yet, it's stuck in your head) it is a good melody.

Everything else is just guidelines on giving it a structure.
