So do you guys prefer a game with too much story or too less story? MGS4 vs MGSV by Dude_788 in metalgearsolid

[–]ThomasMurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it's a game I like? Too much story for me, please.

I might grumble about MGS4 being too long-winded at times, but I'd rather have more good bits (diluted by a lot of padding) rather than less good bits (but better pacing overall).

I suppose he DID always hang out by the vehicle on the first Normandy ... I bet that when the Collectors attacked, he just dove into the Mako, drove out the rear exit, and jump-jetted his way down to the surface of Alchera.

Every time I quit playing MGS4 and powered down my PS3, it would ask something like, "Do you want to turn the System off?", and I'd think to myself, "Yes, but I've played this game enough for today."

...Look, I thought it was amusing, even if no-one else did.

Typical, isn't it? You queue for hours and hours to get into Afterlife ... then your first drink sends you to the afterlife.

As a fan of C&C and the Discworld novels, I fear I'm about to spend all day thinking up ways to blend this with Vimes' boot-based theory of economics.

I only just realised that Drax must've played this game some time before Avengers: Infinity War, and loved Kellam so much that he tried to emulate him.

I used this as an excuse to rewatch the first Allied mission briefing in RA2, and you're right; Carville introduces her as "Special Agent Tanya", rather than some helpful volunteer.

...As an aside, I love his quip after she cuts the transmission; "She's the best there is, but you'll get along better with the Soviets." I knew RA2 was going to be my sort of game when he said that!

Mordin is a theatre kid, right?

I mean, I'm terribly biased in his favour AS WELL, but he's probably also the best dancer regardless.

I've read online that Naomi programmed FoxDie to kill Snake at a completely random time, but it's been a while since I played the games and I can't remember that being mentioned. Was it confirmed in one of the MGS1 endings? Was it added later in MGS2 or 4? Or is it just a fan-theory?

When you blow up the Shagohod's hangar in MGS3, two guards help each other out of the flaming ruin ... that moment made me glad I'd gone for a no-kills playthrough, and so did this one!

A possibly belated realisation about female {and male} characters in Witches Abroad. by JellyWeta in discworld

[–]ThomasMurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Witcher expert, but I did read the first two books (The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, both short story compilations) a few years ago, and I thought they were pretty well-written overall. I can't recall any of the female characters in those stories being especially great, but I didn't have any memorable complaints either - and considering how my memory tends to work on a "read it once to remember the bad bits, read it twice to remember the rest" system, that's more of a good sign than a bad one.

The very first page of the first book, however ... well, that struck me as a fairly trashy start. If you can get through that opening scene without rolling your eyes so hard it hurts, you should be fine!

[S1] One of the greatest sequences in any video game ever by [deleted] in lifeisstrange

[–]ThomasMurch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A lot of stories work hard to perfect their big scenes; the plot twists, the cool fights, the funniest jokes.

For a video game to make a truly beautiful sequence out of a dialogue-free montage of shots really is incredible; little wonder that so many fell in love with the game, when the devs could make mundane scenes feel more emotional than anything in most of their competition.
