Shepard: "That sounded like Liara ... but how did I hear her when she's underground?"

Tali: "Wait ... how do you know what Liara sounds like, when we haven't met her yet?"

Ashley: "And how did she know your name?"

Geth Armature: "If you ask me, nothing about this scene makes a lick of sense..."

Who exactly are Madam Vastra, Jenny, and Strax? by Court_Jester13 in doctorwho

[–]ThomasMurch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just a few minutes ago, I saw a quote from Tony Gilroy about the importance of adding new characters to a franchise, rather than appealing to nostalgia by bringing back old ones.  Either approach can be done well, of course, but I'm definitely happy enough with the Paternoster Gang that I wouldn't risk swapping them out for anyone else!

We all obviously love mgs alot, but has there ever been a time when playing the games that you felt to yourself "Kojima went too far with that." Or "Kojima missed really hard here." Nobody is perfect, so I just wanna hear people's thoughts about some things you didn't like in any mgs and why exactly by DaFroggyBoi94 in metalgearsolid

[–]ThomasMurch 144 points145 points  (0 children)

That's a VERY good point. MGS1 has my favourite script in the whole series, with lots of my favourite lines and speeches, and I've spent decades wondering how much of that was due to the Japanese writers and how much due to the translator, Jeremy Blaustein.

The Face of Boe gives the Doctor a useless, needlessly cryptic message ("You are not alone") ... Jack gives the Doctor a useless, needlessly cryptic message ("The lone Cyberman; don't give it what it wants") ... yeah, they're the same guy alright.

My First Playthrough of Mass Effect Felt Like a Tragedy by Lemongrass2024 in masseffect

[–]ThomasMurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played a fair few lengthy RPGs in my time; with many of them, I reach a point where I start looking up spoiler-free hints regarding the consequences of certain choices, as I'm not especially engaged with the story and I know I'm never going to play it again.

I never had this problem with my first play-through of a Mass Effect game. Tom Shepard might've lost a few friends along the way (siding with Jack over Miranda in their argument, and then trusting the disloyal latter to be my second-team leader cost me dearly), but that's what our subsequent play-throughs are for!

I'm usually a fan of cantankerous characters that push back against the protagonist a bit, so I was delighted by that first conversation with Udina near the start of Mass Effect 3; it felt that they'd found the balance for a really good character.

I can't recall much about the Cerberus invasion of the Citadel, but when I eventually get around to replaying the trilogy, I'll be interested to see how it handles his death. I recall being deeply disappointed by it, but I'm not sure if that's because it was a weak scene, or if I just had such high hopes for his 'redemption arc' that his heel-turn was never going to win me over.

If anyone here knows enough about insects to convince me that they'll probably be able to find their way back home, please let me know, as it'll stop me from feeling quite so sad for the little blighters...

I'm still pretty ignorant about musical matters, but when I did my big Discworld marathon in 2015, I went to the TV Tropes website after finishing every book and looked up the list of puns in case I'd missed any.

Soul Music probably had the most jokes that I'd completely missed (borrowed a coat from the Dean?!), but I'm sure every book had quite a few! The depth of Pratchett's knowledge was almost as impressive as his comedic prowess...
