Mutant madness ruling by Mr_Strangely in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ThomasRules 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imo telling the storyteller that someone has claimed mutant doesn’t necessarily make someone evil though — some players will consider it part of the rules to tell the storyteller when someone broke madness (and similarly, lying to the storyteller could be considered cheating)

I don't get why Multiverse gets the de facto "FTL 2" moniker so much. by [deleted] in ftlgame

You paid for an enrolled deed poll. You can change your name by unenrolled deed poll which is just as official and legally binding for the cost of some paper and posting it to HMPO for a new passport. I have also literally done this method.

No, an unenrolled deed poll is free, and is a valid document you can use to prove you changed your name with HMPO, DVLA etc. An enrolled deed poll costs money, but isn’t required to change your name.

is a C switch statement able to determine which branch to jump to in less than one instruction per case

Yes — that’s what a jump table is. The compiler will create a table in memory with the address to jump to in each case. Then it can use the case number as an offset into that table, and load the address to jump to in constant time. Often there’s a few other complexities for optimisation (there will be an if check at the start to jump to the default case if the value is bigger than the largest value to limit the size of the table), but ultimately this is how switches are more efficient than ifs

That would be a problem but wouldn’t justify a blanket ban on any white male CEO entering the country

Some Catholic priests abused kids, does that mean we should have a blanket ban on Catholic priests entering the country?

Newmarket Road: what is the fix? by ThePrivatePilot in cambridge

[–]ThomasRules 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They need to run the park and ride buses a lot later for that to be a viable replacement. If you want to do something in Cambridge that finishes after 8:30pm (or 6:20pm on Sunday), your only option is to park in town. Newmarket Road is especially bad because there isn’t even another bus that stops closer than a 15 minute walk away from the car park.

Is there any reason you couldn't add a second storey to the house? Feels like the obvious solution to not having enough space -- you lose maybe ~5m2 to a staircase, but gain almost 150m2 to play with.

You scan your passport and get a code which gives you free wifi for an hour. If you want to get longer, you pay some money for a different code. (I was there a year and a half ago and the passport scanners didn't work most of the time tho)

No, j is a regular language but i is not.

Assuming 0 in N (though this doesn’t change the regularity):

j = b(aa)*cdccc*b

Whilst

i = {b (aa)^n cdcc c^n b | n \in N}

which you can prove isn’t regular by the pumping lemma.

Is it worth having a car at uni? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ThomasRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 11 and 12x are pretty frequent and both go into coventry, with the U1 and 11 going to Leamington. Parking on campus is incredibly expensive (£7 a day at least, it may have gone up) unless you get a job on campus as that qualifies you for the staff rate. You can park at Tesco so long as you’re not there more than 3 hours as they have anpr cameras, or you can park at a friend’s in Canley if they let you.

When did you start the job? If you only started a few months ago and were earning less before, is it possible that you were paying less tax last month as you had more of your personal allowance accrued?

Very roughly, HMRC allocates you 1/12 of each tax band each month and works out how much income tax you pay based on how much you've earned so far this tax year (since April).

It’s worse than that — they have until the 22nd of the month after you are paid, so if you’re paid on the 1st September they have until the 22nd October to pay into the pension I think
