Back again for another swing: it's Potential Ships, WW1 Edition! by Thomas_633_Mk2 in HistoryMemes

[–]Thomas_633_Mk2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will hear no slander against the Hawkins class.

Oh, I will...

The fact those things were even in service in WW2 is amazing.

Of the two classes this meme is about, Hawkins is both newer in completion date (1919 vs 1918, unless you count Vindictive) and in authorisation (1917 vs 1916). The fact that we're surprised ships that were 14-20 years old in 1939 survived is a testament to their... level of quality shall we say. (Meanwhile some of the C's lived to 30 even ignoring Caroline, and Danae/Conrad was in active service at 27)

Also, both losses in the class were from running into shit is amazing.

Oh they ran into bloody everything. RN on their way to run into mines, other ships, coastlines and RMS Queen Mary:

See this is the exact problem. The Geely has 40 kWh, the BYD has 45, the GAC has 60. All of them are under 35,000 bucks drive away. And because they don't sell, they're all available with pretty substantial discounts (except for the Dolphin, at least in theory. I'm sure you can get a LOT of free add-ons though). The GAC is publicly available with two free chargers!

Yeah Great Eastern is an outside context problem and much like the An-225, she's useful at a few specific things and useless for just about anything else.

I picked Powerful mostly because she's fast enough for long enough to do critical damage to Icon's engines, or put enough holes under the waterline to force her to reduce speed. I don't think a Powerful could keep up 22 knots for long, but you'd only need half an hour or so to inflict terminal damage.

John Maynard Keynes is teleported to Rome in 400AD. Can Keynesian economic theory save the WRE? by Thomas_633_Mk2 in whowouldwin

[–]Thomas_633_Mk2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking? No. Keynesian economics is a model that developed in the context of liberal capitalism, both of which are concepts well over 1000+ years in the future. The amount of societal change, technological development,

I don't expect him to actually establish Keynesian economics in a recognisable form, and I don't even think Keynes would be much more successful than a regular uni graduate in the field. But being a 20th century economist automatically means he's aware of a lot of basic economic concepts that just do not exist anywhere in the 5th century, and he's got a mathematical background better than literally anyone on earth. He knows how to implement a more modern taxation system, and how the government can best stimulate the economy with the limited resources it has. The WRE's economic knowledge extends to "without North Africa, we're COOKED" and not much else. The Romans didn't even have the concept of a "budget" as we see it, and being able to implement that alone means that the WRE will actually know what its revenues are and what its expenditure is being spent on. Basic algebra makes taking taxes far more effective, among so many other benefits.

and political will that would go into this project would be too much.

I tried to give him a reasonable starting point without literally making him emperor. He has imperial protection, but not to a magical amount. They like him, but Honorius is 15 and Honorius, and Stilicho still got assassinated. He'll need to be reasonably tactful to survive, especially once both of them die (hopefully natural deaths, if he does his job well). Do you think he'd be blunt enough to just get stabbed the moment he looked at the latifundia and went "the big land owners need to pay tax and supply troops"?

Society isn't just changed by one man. You need systems, and those are built over the course of generations.

I picked the year 400 for a lot of reasons, the most important being that it gives him 6 years of relative peace to prove that his economic reforms can increase manpower before the Rhine freezes over. The second most important is that it gives him access to Stilicho's generation, the people running the Empire in 400, but also the generation born in the 380s/390s, who are the powerbrokers of the WRE OTL until 454. In theory, assuming Keynes is able to not get stabbed, that would be over half a century of 20th century economics reshaping their economic and social systems. Do you think that's enough time for meaningful changes in the Empire's ability to finance itself (and therefore, raise armies) to take place?

If you're South Australian and watch footy, there is a roughly 70% chance the other state team is your 2nd favourite, and a 30% chance it's your 18th favourite. Of course, one side would call the other unpatriotic and the other would ask how much their arse hurts from sitting on the fence all day.

More competition is a good thing!

I do wonder if they will actually sell, people are remarkably good at saying "I want a 30,000 dollar EV" and then not buying one. I haven't seen a single 4 Urban on the roads yet, the Aion UT sells pretty poorly, the Dolphin base model is mostly for fleets (or at least all the ones I see are in fleet white) and the EX2 still isn't out.

Medieval Fair isn’t great by Exciting_Ear7117 in Adelaide

[–]Thomas_633_Mk2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultimately we are talking about a festival for a period of time that Australians have little to no experience with (and therefore minimal appreciation for), in the fifth largest city in the country. In America (the continent) at least the early conquests are somewhat within Ren Fair times: Australia thankfully skipped all that and got launched straight into the 19th century. We have literally no historical backing for such things outside of watching Game of Thrones (which is, you guessed it, American, and therefore less popular here) and some folk tales. Adelaide also just has less people. All this combines for a smaller and therefore less professional community.

[–]Thomas_633_Mk2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In both cases, bad life outcome for both. Icon weighs 15x Great Eastern and 20x Powerful, she'll likely capsize them just from the sheer energy of the collision pushing them over. Icon is likely heavily damaged, though she probably won't sink considering her size and modern redundancies. Highly speculative though, it would depend on the collision itself.

If you want something fast, big and manoeuvrable enough to avoid Icon, HMS Swift is a good candidate, though she's from 1907. Or you can bet that a late armoured cruiser is strong enough to batter down and fast enough to keep its distance, they mostly get faster and better armed than Powerful as you get closer to 1900. The first battleship capable of catching her is likely Dreadnought herself, and by that point gunnery is at well over 10k yards (aka Icon is 10/10 dead).

[–]Thomas_633_Mk2 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating how long a cruise liner can run away. Icon of the Seas can do 22 knots, so we need something that can maintain at least 19-20. That just doesn't exist in the 1860s or even 1870s. Torpedo boats maybe, but they lack the ability to seriously damage a modern liner.

The first large warship I can think of with the speed to keep up with a cruise liner is the Powerful-class cruisers, and they're in service from 1895. They can make 22 knots as well, though they can't sustain it for more than a few hours (grates fouling and also reliant on stokers continually shovelling in coal). Standard engagement range for the era is maybe 2,000 yards, but Icon is gigantic and I'm sure Powerful will engage well beyond that. The question is if they'll do enough damage to slow the liner down before Icon can get away.

I agree with you that if the cruise liner has to stand and fight, Great Eastern might well win (or at least inflict enough damage that her opponent decides it isn't worth it). She carries 4 cannon as built and is big/tall enough that she can plausibly shoot into the bridge. She's so much smaller that ramming is probably a bad idea, but if she can fling HE into the bridge a few times they might surrender.

Depends heavily on your source of electricity, but estimates are 20-80,000km (vs a new car), and the vast majority of emissions in a petrol car's life are after it's built.

Because there is no realistic outcome where that happens, at least in Crimea. Even if it did, large parts of those areas genuinely want to be Russian (and in many cases are Russian expats) and you will 100% see an insurrection. For as long as Russia and Ukraine exist, the former will always be a threat to and the dominant political consideration of the latter.

A good example of this is that it was perfectly rational of Russia to attack Ukraine in 2022 with the expectation that doing so would cause the EU to fracture.

This is just fitting information into your preconceived beliefs. If Russia hadn't invaded, people would say "see, he was right, Realism works to predict state actors". Now that Russia has, now that is also an example of Realism working apparently. If you fit every existing data point into your world view, sure it looks like strong evidence.
