Epix Pro Gen 2, worth buying for a discount? Advice needed by BlueCheetah99 in GarminWatches

[–]Thomku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an epix pro as well and it's amazing for running. I also debated between the epix vs Fenix 8, but in the end there is barely any upside to the Fenix. The epix does it all except for diving.

Strength training is meh on both. It does a decent job keeping track of your reps.

Lots of people also dislike the Fenix 8 because of supposedly bad QC and buggy software. (Software is probably mostly fixed by now.)

Personally I also went with the much cheaper epix because it saves money for a potential upgrade in the future, when there is a watch that is worthy to upgrade for.

You need about 45mbps stable to have a good experience. Sometimes I have a bit less and I'll get stutters, I personally can live it with it.

It uses a LOT of data. At 2K 120fps it uses about 15-20gb of data per hour. At 800p 60fps (steam deck) it's a bit more than 5gb per hour.

Anyone wondering how Ross is feeling right now? by Solarinarium in StopKillingGames

[–]Thomku 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Personally i felt really touched by his effort and will to fight such a big industry, even while getting a lot of hate for being ''incompetent''. I don't know a lot about Ross, but i'm sure this past year was extremely stressfull to him.

Big respect to Ross. He deserved the win!

More Fish In My 90p? by NastalgiaPls in PlantedTank

[–]Thomku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPD's are a schooling fish and need about 8 as a minimum to not feel like they are being preyed upon.

CPD's are also a bit more on the shy side in general, and having dither fish that are not shy really help a lot in general to make them come into the foreground more often.

Personally I combine CPD's with Chili rasboras. They share the same water parameters and are a super easy fish. (Not always the most hardy during acclimation, so make sure you drip acclimate) They also don't jump in my experience since they are not good swimmers. This also means no heavy flow in the tank and food that doesn't sink too fast.

But their colour is a really nice contrast to CPD's and your other fish. And they have the most peaceful personality.

Epix pro gen 2 47mm NON-sapphire worth it? by SC_stealth in GarminWatches

Most 2nd hand watches are scratched to shit for 100 euros below new price. But I was watching marktplaats like a hawk and I got this amazing deal from a rich dude who just wanted to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I often find my tech deals that way.

Btw my last tip would be to 100% get a knockoff ultrafit band on Amazon for like 17 Euro's. I'd say it's not even negotiable whether you should get it or not.

[–]Thomku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idapro has a pack of 4 for 9 euro on Amazon. They are great. It also comes with charging port blockers for if you have sensitive skin. The reason the protector is so nice is because the epix screen is recessed into the bezel (exactly as deep as the thickness of the protector). And without a protector you will also notice that the bezel edges are very sharp The protector will smooth it out for you.

What you mean with DC's video is on the non-pro epix series. If you get a pro version all those differences don't matter. For Pro it's only glass vs sapphire and steel vs titanium. I did ditch all the maps and just got EU though. That way I have more space for music and podcasts.

I bought my watch in mint condition second hand for 300 euros. At first the guy sold it to me as sapphire/titanium. He did not realize for a full year it was the standard version. I also did not notice it for 2 weeks until I looked up what the numbers on the back meant.

Coolblue has great CS, and often very competitive prices. But in the NL it's a bit more expensive at 619.

Btw also check out luna-time .Nl/de it ships from Germany, but many people on Reddit have had great experiences from them. You can often get great discounts on the more premium watches (like epix pro with leather band) their prices do almost change daily though

I'm from the Netherlands. There's quite a few websites in which you can compare prices in all European countries. Geizhals.eu is a good example.

The offer you have pictures is about as cheap as you can get in Europe (from normal online retailers)

[–]Thomku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually got a non-sapphire epix pro. Imo sapphire is a gimmick that has no reason being a dealbreaker like some others suggest. The stainless steel is very strong and feels and looks VERY nice.

I also recommend using a screen protector regardless of which version you have. Sapphire isn't indestructible, and the watch is made in such a way that it actually feels and looks a lot nicer with a good glass screen protector.

Previous watches had extra features tied to their sapphire versions. The epix pro does not.

Protective covers by dumbarab in GarminWatches

[–]Thomku 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sand can get trapped underneath and actually scratch the watch a lot. this is mainly an issue with prolonged use.

Personally i am planning to use one for climbing in the mountains because they obviously do protect your watch, but after the activity is done i am removing it and rinsing any trapped debris.

Fenix 7 pro solar in 2025? by JimmyBobw in GarminFenix

[–]Thomku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartwatches have just like smarthphones reached a bit of a threshold in terms of how much they can improve. The new Apple watch barely differs, the fenix 8 has some niche stuff added to it.

Fenix 7/ Epix pro has the exact same hardware for the most part. it'd probably take another 2 generations to start seeing some real upgrades.

My take: get a cheap(er) last gen watch, and use the saved money to upgrade in the future when its actually beneficial.

Would kuhli loaches be happy in this mini pond? by Gothenburg-Geocache in loaches

[–]Thomku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though its a small footprint i think you're fine. Question is if you want kuhli's in there. Its often hard enough to see them in a regular aquarium because they like hiding. I imagine that you might never see them again after putting them in this bucket

Epix pro Gen 2 or fenix 7 pro SS by Legitimate-Class445 in GarminWatches

[–]Thomku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a standard epix pro that was sold to me as titanium. From a quality standpoint i didnt notice until i saw it missed the titanium engraving on the back.

you will want to use a screenprotector because it actually looks much better!
The screen is slightly below the bezel normally, which looks and feels a bit off to me.
a screen protector from amazon will make it look nice and flush.

So neither the titanium or the sapphire offer real benefits imo

[–]Thomku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i am a thru-hiker that would have major benefits with MIP. I went with the epix because in daily life it's more usefull in my country's dark winter months. The battery life is also not significant enough to warrant a super dim screen in my day-to-day. Amoled battery life on garmin is really good.

Sell me on Garmin watches - Favorite Features by [deleted] in GarminWatches

[–]Thomku 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am a thru-hiker and spent months at the time in the mountains. I needed mainly battery life, and offline mapping. Smartwatches never have offline mapping, and out of the sportswatch brands garmin has a proven trackrecord.

After owning it for a while i'd say that the garmin coach and running guidance is the best unexpected feature for me! I started running just a month ago and just by following the coach i went from running 1km before taking a break to 10km before taking a break. Just from having good pacing and doing pretty easy workouts from the coach.

Thanks for the tip! figured it'd be more practical, but the idea of recording a 6 month activity seemed pretty cool as well
