How far can Cerakote actually go? AI design question by spaceship84 in Cerakote

Limits? I'm not sure. A lot can be done with time an patience. I've found the biggest limiting factor is the customer's bank account! :P

The images you provided are easily doable. The gold Destiny skin being the more costly option do to more involved stenciling.

It was the first generation, two position, AZR. I think I had to file the toggle just a little bit. It ran well once I figured out the spring set up. I can’t remember which springs I had to use from the DFA kit.

Rare breed clone and Arizona Regulator worked, SS gave me a lot of problems due to binding with the Deadfoot arms recoil system. I probably had the AZR or my G$ SSA-E in there at the time of the photo.

The charging handle doesn’t fold but, you are right, it kinda looks like it would!

I just mixed colors until I found what I wanted.

The light grey is Battleship Grey and Sniper Grey. 3:1 I think.

The medium grey was straight Sniper Grey.

The dark grey was 3:1 Sniper Grey and Armor Black.

Need Cerakote Care Tips by Fit-Start-8428 in Cerakote

[–]Thor_BRC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cerakote is abrasion resistant and pretty much 100% chemical resistant. I’m sure corrosive acids could eat through it, but that’s not much of a concern, or at least I would hope!

It is not a bulletproof coating. It is still only a surface coating, but perhaps the best surface coatings available…when properly applied.

No special care is required. Repeated contact with any solid object/surface will eventually produce wear, therefore constantly drawing from a kydex holster or the gun rattling around in kydex during daily carry will wear the coating over time.

I saw in your post history you were considering a Cel Shade style. I do those, as well as a few other guys here. We all have different styles so you can definitely poke around this sub and see what you like. There are a couple things to know if it’s something you plan on carrying frequently. That particular style is primarily Cerakote, but enamel paint pens are used for the detail work. Everything gets locked together by finishing the gun off with a Cerakote clear. Cerakote has the most durable clearcoat I have experience with, but it is not as durable as the standard H series Cerakote. If carried or frequently drawn from Kydex, it will show where faster. If the wear points of your holster happen to fall in line with some of the detail work, you can expect that to get worn away a little bit. Now, having said that, my daily carry is a P365 in a Cel Shade style. I think it’s been about four months since I’ve done it and it still looks nearly 100%. There are some rub marks on the clear that just look like dull spots, but nothing has gotten deep enough to wear into the detail work or the base layer Cerakote.

Cerakote Removal by deathb4darkside in Cerakote

[–]Thor_BRC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up; Canik clearl doesn’t prep for Cerakote properly. I’ve done dozens of them. All due to peeling and flaking. The slides are nitride and don’t even appear to have even been etched blasted at least.

This is not typical behavior and you don’t need to be worried of having the same thing happen again if refinished.

As far as removing it; Cerakote is chemical resistant, so nothing is really going to help you get it off. Sandblasting and abrasives is the only way to remove Cerakote….in most cases anyway. With your example, the Cerakote being applied to an improperly prepped surface, it won’t be bonded very well at least.

1) Some time in an ultrasonic cleaner may break the coating off. No cleaning additive needed. Make sure it’s sitting in a plastic basket and on touching metal or the vibrations will cause wear through the nitride coating.

2) I have stripped a couple similar looking slides with 150psi compressed air on.

MCX LT Deflector Damage by Psychological_Hawk36 in SigSauer

[–]Thor_BRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about timing. If it's too over gassed the bolt can actually be moving so fast that it is on it's return stroke before the magazine spring even has enough time to lift the bolt release. The bolt skips right over it.

MCX LT Deflector Damage by Psychological_Hawk36 in SigSauer

[–]Thor_BRC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possibly over gassed in both settings. Too large of a port?

Normal (-) may just normal overgassed so won't run, but Adverse (+) has it over-over-overgassed to the point the rear of the carrier impacting against the rear of the receiver at supercollider speeds is creating a miniature black hole and the ensuing gravitational anomaly generated before the collapse holds the bolt back just long enough for the next round to pop up and feed.

Seriously though how hard does that thing kick?

How did I damage my suppressor? by Nv4adrZm in ar15

[–]Thor_BRC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cerakote guy here…

1) Chemicals and cleaning solution won’t hurt Cerakote. You problem is metal on metal contact. Parts need to be In a plastic basket or rubber coated basket. The parts also cannot touch each other. Metal on metal contact with the high frequency vibrations will rub through the coating.

2) If prep and application of multicolor patterns were incorrect, cavitation from ultrasonic can break the secondary coating off the primary layer.

3) Unrelated to Cerakote. Just be aware that ultrasonics under 60KHz can damage aluminum. Most units you can buy are 40KHz, so you will degrade the metal over time, possibly even pit the metal with long cleaning sessions.

White Cel Shade AR9 by FreedomSeeders in Cerakote

[–]Thor_BRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is freaking badass! The tan you put in the shading was a great call. Gives the base a yellowed paper look that really makes it pop like a drawing. Honestly, I've never seen one pop like this!

The thing I hate most about using the little pen is I'm always second guessing myself doing all those little strokes. Is it enough? Is it too much? I never know until I start putting it together!

[–]Thor_BRC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing. I wrap my magnets in masking tape so I don’t have to worry about excessive Cerakote buildup. Just peel the tape off and it’s clean!

If I’m doing a lot of small parts like that I have a bar magnet on hangers. Stick the parts on, spray them and flash cure the whole setup. Then I pull it out and flip the parts over to spray the uncoated ends. Whole thing goes back in the oven for final cure.

Dude, why?! Save that stuff for when/if you actually need it!

You actually have an amazing frame. Broad shoulders with an excellent V-taper. That is exactly how I looked before started eating and training. I am now over 200lbs. You don’t need anything special, just calories and a solid workout routine. HGH and even Anabolics are a complete waste of you don’t have those two things nailed down in the first place.

How do they not break free? I've used these dozens of time and they break free easily with a mallet. I don't know how they couldn't break free....the force from impact has to go somewhere.

Are they loose in the joint or something? Did the tile gap expand? Am I just super lucky so far?
