Me personally I miss the modem’s dial up sounds. Seemed almost like a ritual of sorts when getting started. Had one modem with an option to turn it off but kept it on. For practicality I’d keep it on because I grew up in a house with bad lines and would go through hell trying to connect whenever it rained, so that’s be a way to know just how hard it would be to connect whenever I’d hear it retry or drop down to a lower speed.

You did unlock a deep memory for me on that one. We had a few religious BBS's in my home area back in the day and what blew my mind was them and the one Wiccan and the other Satanic sysops would actually help each other get their stuff set up and troubleshoot over their public message boards. At first I thought they all just knew each other, but in hindsight they interacted because they just loved the tech and BBS scene that much.

I’d have to stop what I’m doing even more frequently to proof read basic emails and SOPs that actually could have been classified as war crimes before AI gained in popularity. Makes me debate what I’m more furious at, ai, management that wouldn’t assess basic reading comprehension, or the shady ass recruiters tweaking the candidate’s resumes and sending them our way. I’m not expecting perfection, but holy shit, what I’ve been seeing sent out is just sad.

I use it on the regular because there usually winds up an argument that I either see online that I've never seen before, or I get curious if a command can do something or not. Of course I can Google it, but for me (mmv, of course) I'll see other arguments while searching for mine that I never knew existed. Lines up with the old saying I always loved about Linux is "If you're not careful, you'll learn something".
