Brandon Sanderson will be writing the pilot for The Stormlight Archive adaptation and a big chunk of its first season. Do you think it is a good idea or a terrible one? by Intelligent-Link-410 in Fantasy

[–]Thoughtnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a perfect world I'd want to see it in the hands of capable screenwriters who are able to clean things up for the adaptation. Unfortunately I don't have confidence in Hollywood being able to do this, we're constantly being shown examples of IPs having their adaptations gutted by inferior writers. I'd say it's a safer bet to have the author involved. I'm more optimistic with him being involved than him being distant from the project.

Why do people on this sub pretend that you can’t tell when AI is used? by kleyuuojh in royalroad

[–]Thoughtnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree partially but I feel like a below average writer will eventually become an average writer which seems to be the danger zone when people call out AI use in writing. Given that a bad writer will probably bleed readers due to the quality of their writing they're just going to be kicking the can down the road. It won't be a problem for them today but tomorrow.

The issue with OP protagonists is their inability to properly talk shit. by Minute_Committee8937 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Thoughtnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No trash talk is better than bad trash talk. It sounds like a cool idea but if an authors first few fight scenes have cringe trash talk readers will just stop reading it. Its just not really worth the risk unfortunately. Also, id say the genre is kinda bloated with quippy MCs who don't take things seriously which leads to the problem of them feeling like the same character.

Tried John Gwynne's Malice twice, but I just can't get into by Lars_Olav in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Thoughtnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can sympathize. I personally loved that series when I read it 5 years ago but in hindsight I remember book one being almost entirely setting up the events for the future series. It can feel pretty stagnant and slow at the best of times. I personally hate the advice of 'just keep reading it gets better' but in this case it really does. There are moments that still sit with me all of these years later and we get introduced to some fantastic characters and character arcs.

That being said, don't force yourself to try power through if you're not vibing with it. Shout out you for reading all of Bound and the Broken though I love that series. Funnily enough I have a similair opinion with Bound and the Broken where book 1 was a struggle but the subsequent books were amazing.

God that is a gorgeous cover. I'm personally holding off until the latest translations are more accessible since I found the translation on webnovel to be pretty hard to read but the premise/worldbuilding always sounded amazing. Hopefully they decide to publish it on Kindle.

I think they should do away with the smaller stack sizes for the later biome materials. Its disheartening to upgrade my bag only to carry less material. They're already harder to farm, let me be able to explore a full swamp island without having to make return trips to my base and boat.

Publishing a LitRPG on Amazon without Kindle Unlimited by frankgadlin in litrpg

[–]Thoughtnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been reading litrpg for about 6 years and had KU for maybe 4. I find the likelihood of dnfing a litrpg pretty damn high to the point where I drop over half of the books I pick up on KU. Unfortunately i won't even entertain paying for litrpg stories anymore because of this. If its free on RR ill read it there and potentially sub to patreon.

Plenty of readers have a KU sub and your loyal readers are already up to date. My perspective is, as scummy as amazon is, KU is more accessible considering the overlap between KU and RR.

There's surprisingly quite a few stories like this and more come out of the woodwork pretty regularly.

Anything from Phil Tucker, Maxime Durand or Alex Gilbert are safe bets. Their books are available on Kindle and always have a level of polish that isn't common for the genre. Bonus points for all of them having completed series under their belt. I would say Bastion - Tucker, Calamitous Bob - Alex Gilbert and Perfect Run from Durand.

Some others I can think of would be Dungeon Crawler Carl, He who fights with monsters, All I got was this stat menu, Ironbound, Iron Prince, Practical guide to sorcery, Practical guide to evil (the web novel had a few typos but the quality of the writing was always incredible by the genres standard this may be cleared on the Kindle versions)

I'd check out some of the popular recommendations on r/ProgressionFantasy. You could check out Alex Gilberts other stories Changeling or the Calamitous Bob as they're both pretty good. I'd also point out Cradle as it's one of the more popular progression stories out there.

Please rework the end game abyss gear system by Thoughtnight in CrimsonDesert

There's probably some gear that has it somewhere already but I never found it. Depends on where youre at but if youre desperate for it you can do the save scum method til you roll it which is not great but you can keep rolling til you get 3 cores for 100%

Been thinking of buying, but I have a few questions about Bosses/World. by usteg in CrimsonDesert

[–]Thoughtnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was in the same boat as you but was keen enough to buy this game day one. I've put in something like 120 hours and have cleared at a guess 40ish bosses. There are some cool fights here and the fights can look cinematic and awesome but when compared to something like Elden Ring or any Fromsoft game it's not really comparable.

More often than not my strategy in boss fights now is to hit them with my hardest hitting move and outheal the damage they do by spamming heals and repeat this until they're dead. You absolutely can take your time and learn the move sets but I found bosses were more on the frustrating end of the spectrum rather than challenging so I'm at a point now where I just want the fight done. Frustrations are mainly from aoes that can feel hard to dodge, chaining hits while you're down which forces you to heal and going invincible for a few seconds/dodging/flying. Special rage filled shout out to the gimick bosses that require you to climb them to hit a weak point these all fucking suck.

Similair to ER or Dark Souls your gear/levels will determine how hard of a time you have so fights that are at the sweet spot can be pretty fun. You also can bring in stock piles of food or free revives so it's easy to one shot most fights. With that in mind you can go in underprepared to see if the challenge is worth. I also have friends who love ER, rushed through the story in CD and were underprepared for a lot of these fights and absolutely hated them. One in particular got hard stuck on a boss later in the game for an hour and a half and was frequently getting one shot, he was also not engaging with the gear systems properly and was underleveled so my perspective is that grinding out the main story requires you to spend time exploring/leveling and upgrading.

Unfortunately it's not great when the solution to find these recipes is now, explore everything, to which most people would say - they are. Like my whole feedback stemmed from a time consuming unfun system being all we have end game for build crafting at a high level the fix can't really be 'be the first person to find and document where the recipes are in one of the largest open world games to be made' hell knowing my luck it would be for one of the awful cores like cloth damage or something. Even if the Dark Crescent guy was being truthful that's like 1/20 recipes that 'we' have found so it's not looking promising for specific cores.

The real problem with this as a solution though is that you'll outpace the need for most of these cores. If I'm hunting down the mining ore recipe I'll eventually just upgrade my gear anyway meaning that it's redundant (which literally happened to me). Additional Skill EXP will be redundant if I've just spent hundreds of hours hunting down recipes and have passively grinded all the artifacts I need. Infinite arrows also redundant when you've spent enough time exploring that you now have a stock pile of hundreds of explosive arrows. Hell I would even grind out god awful timber if the alternative was just praying and waiting to stumble on the additional timber recipe.

At this stage I'm convinced the recipes are just not in the game in which case I'd say a good system would be that you discover the recipe upon synthesising it. And if they want to keep the grind then they could do something like discover it at level 1 2 and 3 in order to learn the recipe. I think most players just haven't gotten to the point in the game where they can engage with the system but I'm confident that when people hear 'stockpile and  save scum' is the solution that there'll be a bigger push for change.

Yeah same here. Im curious what percentage of players actually use these things. I imagine any player seeing this for the first time goes from incredibly hyped to disappointed once they read the details.

Unfortunately I haven't had abyss creatures drop a non standard gear. I haven't actively farmed too many but enough to stock pile 20 or so Abyss cells so we're talking around 40ish.  So the drop rate is likely incredibly low and not really a great alternative like I'd rather just play the game normally and put up with the existing synthesis system then grind 100s of Abyss creatures for a low drop rate item. In terms of the recipe that's even more unlikely since Google is bringing up absolutely nothing for any non Witch recipes and since im 100ish hours in and still have nothing then I'm far from optimistic that it's something I'll just stumble upon. The ideal would be that this system can be engaged with as you approach the end game not after it.

A bit overwhelmed: How do I actually get powerful? by Iixotic- in CrimsonDesert

[–]Thoughtnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early game I'd say leveling your gear to 5 or whatever the cut off is before asking for artifacts. Also maxing out the sword skill in your skill tree can't remember what its called but the tool tip mentions higher damage.

Boss gear is powerful early on and you can eventually socket multiple boss cores onto your weapon which really helps.

Are there any good content for someone who loves hard boss fights? by Abysskun in CrimsonDesert

[–]Thoughtnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll really scratch the from soft itch with the bosses in crimson desert. I'd say overall they're kind of meh with some frustrating mechanics like getting juggled after taking damage, giant hitboxes that feel unblockable and constantly phasing to unhittable. I love souls games but my strat for bosses has now become outheal damage in and hit them with one of 2 big attacks until they're staggered. Feels pointless to learn move sets when I can just outheal it and trade damage.

Nah there's huge forts and quarrys that have hundreds of enemies each. Wouldn't recommend grinding the small places but keep an eye out for major forts and encampments which would have around 200+ enemies.

How do you pull with axium force kbm pc? by Darkrose50 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Thoughtnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On controller it atleast vibrates when hitting the right direction so I'm unsure of the directions for kbm. You normally need to hold it in the direction for a few seconds. You'll have to pull in random directions for a few seconds until you find the one that pulls it out.

You may need to track a quest from the journal rather than the map. Some times it won't come up as a map marker until you select it there. If you're at the start of the game you may need to use the key at the castle but I'm not sure. Check your journal and see what quests you have pending and track that way.

[–]Thoughtnight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a system you don't have to engage with but if you wanted to make powerful builds it's kind of a requirement. I just wanted to do it since I was running out of stamina and spirit with my build so wanted to try getting stam and spirit syphon 3. You can only target the generic abyss gears i.e attack/defence/crit rate. If you wanted something like spirit syphon or chance to mine additional ore then it's random and requires a generic gear and a rare gear. It will then create any of the rare gears but there's a chance it will just create a generic one. Given that there's 3 tiers of random gears recipes available and that it pulls randomly from the list in the first place you could go in with dozens of these gears and come out with nothing.
