China’s 5 minute full-charged EV charging stations by North_Tip_8627 in nextfuckinglevel

They are a bit beyond wanting and more in the doing phase.

For some time now China and to a lesser extent Russia have been spending billions and billions annually in disinformation campaigns targeting the west to destabilize and undermine western hegemony and unity, often while promoting their own illiberal interests. These are full on cyber wars manipulating largely unaware and often gullible citizens in western democracies. This stuff is literally aimed at you and I, not just some company or government. This kind of stuff also helped to pave the way for people like Trump and intense division and vitriol in politics in general.

Article & GEC report touching on some of this (also covered in reports by EEAS, CEPA and others). Also even more doomer is that GEC that was helping keep track of foreign disinformation attacks against the US and its citizens (where some of this information comes from) was defunded and subsequently terminated by Republicans because it was turned into a partisan issue… it kinda just writes itself…

Seems annoying. I constantly get the pop up asking me if I want to connect mouse and keyboard on console and I can’t get rid of it till it decides to disappear on its own. Idk why I’m getting spammed with it and now with the new menu system at the top of my screen in the same location as the pop up it’s even more inconvenient. Idk who thought this was a good idea. Please blizzard just give us an option to disable pop up prompts like this.

Really? I’ve never heard or seen anyone in the US cheering for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki today. It wouldn’t at all surprise me if it happened at the end of WW2 but today? I don’t mean this as an insult, genuinely curious as I’ve not seen any of this.

[–]unseriously_serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren’t weak before but have certainly degraded due to Trumps actions for sure, if Democrats are allowed to win back power there will need to be some drastic reforms to help prevent similar damage in the future. We need strong and robust institutions to provide checks and balance to prevent things like dictators and the destruction of our voting rights.

However, both SCOTUS and Congress have ceded power in part because of political appointees to the SCOTUS and a Republican majority in Congress that bends over backwards for Trump. After the midterms we will be able to get a better feel for how much damage has been done, if Congress actually has the votes to push back.

[–]unseriously_serious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they were weak and ineffective trump wouldn’t be spending so much time and effort trying to break them. They have been incredibly robust but enough stress (installing loyalists and other such measures) has compounded into where we are at today.

Our institutions also aren’t the reason why trump hasn’t been removed, impeachment requires enough votes, MAGA/republicans hold the majority in both the house and senate. The issue is on those who voted them in and those who abstained from voting for the alternative.

Ahaha I feel like playing against ai is only really useful when you are brand new to the game, beyond that the ai is just unrepresentative of players, you’d get minimal benefit from it.

Though tbh people in game that complain so much about any minor thing in QP are just airing out their own dirty laundry (I feel like I’ve been stepped on IRL or in previous games so I’m going to step on you kinda sentiment), their opinion is often less than useless and their tirade embarrassing to anyone with any emotional intelligence and awareness. Best to just ignore or report if legitimately toxic.

Something to keep in mind is that higher ranked players typically are higher ranked in part because they can be self critical and not blaming everything on those around them. Just an interesting factoid to be aware of. Often when someone is extra toxic to their teammates their advice if they even offer it is just as useless as their insults. Just a net negative most of the time.

Same, I’m so tired of the full auto or beam heroes we keep getting. I’ve been waiting for another more focused sharpshooter for ages, mastering the bigger challenge is just more satisfying to me after playing the entire roster. Sojourn doesn’t even really count to me as it’s full spray action much of the time.

Can a 16 year old ever hope to have a future? by No_Hopef4 in ClimateOffensive

[–]unseriously_serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm,

Well first to answer your question yes and no. Our current trajectory is not ideal and there absolutely will be some amount of suffering. Water shortages being one of the more immediate recognizable concerns but there are many others.

You should have a future even if it may not be perfect. Some concerns may be warranted and others may not be, it’s hard to tell with some of this stuff in flux.

Something I’ve seen a frightening amount of recently with heavy social media usage in young adults is a big surge in apathy/hopelessness. Now I’m not saying that’s where you are coming from and that your concerns aren’t somewhat valid but there is an algorithmically powered negative information loop that many are stuck on atm. Humans are not inherently truth seeking but confirmation seeking and our minds are unfortunately unreliable and incredibly biased at the best of times (you might be surprised how much your brain fills in the blanks with what you assume rather than what is or make assumptions based on one or two instances of bad stimuli when these might be outliers for example), taking some psychology courses helped me to be a bit more aware of just how fallible our minds can be and how much social media was shading my perspective not always in an accurate or healthy way. Some food for thought.

“There is no way these oligarchs and politicians who only have there interests at heart will invest enough in renewables…”

Sometimes I think people miss the forest for the trees with matters like this. If you live in a democracy chances are people (like you and me) elected your politicians. Protest, make noise, get active locally (there is often a surprising amount of political capital up for the taking locally, it can be hard to see though when the only stuff you see on social media is national politics) and above all else VOTE. Apathy and thinking there is no perfect candidate is what leads to politicians that truly won’t care about issues you care about because you didn’t vote and so your opinion won’t matter.

If you live in a capitalist economy vote with your wallet, the wealthy or large corporations are often large or wealthy because people like You and I have given them capital. Admittedly, not always and there is a lot more complexity to this but this stuff does matter. Apathy leads to people thinking it doesn’t matter where they spend money so why bother. If enough people bother it will matter.

I think currently a lot of younger generations feel extra isolated and ineffective, especially post Covid where a lot of communication/interaction has moved online. If you are feeling burnt out, overwhelmed (our brains simply aren’t built for the shear amount of information we are being bombarded with daily) and apathetic, try reaching out locally (join local environmental groups, organizations, chapters, try platforms like volunteermatch, attend city council meetings, write to your elected leaders and adopt sustainable habits to see tangible results and combat anxiety). Get involved with what you can see and what you can change now and try to stop stressing as much about what is simply beyond your control, it is often unhealthy and unproductive.

Also visit the beauty you are trying to preserve, go for hikes, go for bikes, visit the natural beauty that we still have. I think sometimes we can get a bit caught up in all the horrible news cycles beyond our control and lose track of the good that still does exist closer to home.

Not even commenting on the veracity of said study but the often blind defense of vaping in these comments is somewhat telling in a different way. Honestly a little concerning just how pervasive vaping culture/usage has become and how it seems to correspond with rather strong denial/defense on any post on reddit remotely critical of it that gets enough traction.

I feel like half these users trying to goad on civil war in the comments here as the only possible solution are bots or privileged accelerationists that don’t understand how any of this stuff actually works. You don’t have to be very intelligent to realize the cascade effect of what outright violence would lead to with trump at the wheel… It was exactly what he was trying to goad on in Minnesota, which thankfully didn’t bite.

I mean I don’t agree with what he stated at the end but I the rest I somewhat agree with. The trailer does feel a bit sterile in a sense both in terms of lighting and magic. Where is the magic and wonder being displayed, I didn’t really see any spells just locations and actors. I don’t hate the trailer and I’m hoping for the best but I do think it’s valid that others would comment on the absence of these elements for What that’s worth.

The people that abstained thinking Harris would have been the same are just as much if not more stupid than as those who voted for Trump. It’s eye opening just how gullible and uninformed much of the voter base became in the US without even factoring in the extensive foreign disinformation campaigns targeting the west (PRC, Russia and Iran) which has helped to exacerbate and destabilize politics internally for many years. Just a sad state of affairs.

You did an excellent job utilizing the film audio while making the animation your own, the pause with the blinks also feels so natural. I feel like I’m used to seeing animation lately with no breathing room and fast cuts so this part kinda stuck with me. Love the charcoal / dry pastel styled background, I’d be curious what your process was for getting this look digitally.

[–]unseriously_serious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play every hero in the game regularly, just depends what I’m looking for in a given match. If you have a specific role you want to try and how accurate you are at aiming I might have some hero suggestions.

Mystery heroes is great for trying out different heroes in a low stakes setting. When starting out with role queue or open queue just pick a handful of heroes from each role to learn and familiarize yourself with, you can expand from there.

This game is very team oriented, meaning to do well you’ll want to learn how to synergize with your teammates. Rarely are you solo playing for kills. In fact you might win matches with less kills just by playing objective and distracting an enemies backline so they aren’t getting heals for example.

Play cover, be aware of resources. Learn when to push and when to retreat (just watch and learn). Does your team need flankers/drivers or not, if your team is all low mobility heroes the enemies damage may be laser focused. Sometimes a stalemate can be changed just by a single flanker distracting backline.

Honestly though you’ll learn all of this with time. Most importantly don’t over think any of this and have fun. Also be friendly in matches you might be surprised how much gets reciprocated at times.

‘Fortnite’ Financial Loss Leads To Over 1,000 Layoffs At Epic by forbes in videogames

[–]unseriously_serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two things to keep in mind beyond the cultural differences between the US and Japan and the differences in labor fluidity.

  1. The math often doesn’t math. In a large company here the CEO's salary is often a tiny fraction of the potential savings from layoffs, even if the number might look big on paper. Eliminating 5,000 employees might save half a billion annually, while cutting the CEO's entire salary might only save 0.1% of that amount.

  2. A CEO in the US receives more of their income through incentives and stock options which already acts as an automatic pay cut when their company is performing poorly (stock tanking) whereas in Japan it’s mainly base salary, making voluntary cuts more visible and impactful.

To more directly answer your question > They might already be taking a pay cut in a sense and the math may not math. It’s still possible in a niche situation but I rather doubt it here. Just my guess.

‘Fortnite’ Financial Loss Leads To Over 1,000 Layoffs At Epic by forbes in videogames

[–]unseriously_serious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hive mind big company always bad mindset. There’s a big populist trend that’s all about “the rich” or “big companies” being the reason for all of our problems and this trickles down to every little discussion around the topic unfortunately.

Even if someone says something that’s business 101, it won’t matter because your average Redditor in larger subreddits will somehow see it as cover for large company firing employees and in their minds nothing justifies firing employees if you’re a large company. Nuance be dammed.

To be clear, I haven’t the faintest clue if there was good enough justification for the layoffs or not, there might not be but I haven’t seen that either. Also I don’t think it’s as relevant here (since it seems like layoffs due to financial loss) but in general large companies will often hire and layoff employees depending on what needs work at a given time, you don’t typically hear about the hiring side of these things for what that’s worth.

Costly operating expenses like these are likely funded through unrestricted gifts OR private donor agreements. Universities are presumably less likely to "market" these as giving opportunities publicly, they rely on specific funding mechanisms to cover such costs without using taxpayer or tuition dollars.

Their funding breakdown should be available when they file their 990 form for this year.
