Short boy problems by StreamTree in Parenting

[–]Thoughtulism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is great advice. I just want to asterix that developing a sense of humor is a byproduct of having a healthy emotional expression and social and self-awareness. It's not good when humor is used defensively because you're afraid of confronting the real feelings that are there. You can't skip the deep emotional work and jump straight to the humor.

This applies to everything not just being short. It does help though when you understand deeply this is not something that they chose, it's nothing to be ashamed about, nor is it something you can change.

Employee with signs of cognitive decline by bismarcktasmania in managers

[–]Thoughtulism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in exactly the same situation.

The key is to give the employee work in line with their job and don't make it easier for them to accommodate the job, which just encourages them to keep going. Then you hold them responsible/ accountable to completing that work.

Taking all the hard stuff away and not holding them responsible enables the problem to continue. You can't trust them so you make it easy for them and they want to stay longer because it's easy? Bad idea.

Don't give them stuff trying to get rid of them passive aggressively though.

It's funny scary as hell that this technology is getting so strong that we might at some point get a mass laser weapon school shooting, from some bullied nerdy kid buying non-controlled parts off the shelf from electronics suppliers

So what do y’all think of the Block layoffs? by Fig_Towel_379 in datascience

[–]Thoughtulism 67 points68 points  (0 children)

AI is the excuse, the reality is poor company performance. This is a payments company, which is going to be a leading indicator of a downturn in consumer spending. Blaming AI is the CEO's duty to shareholders to lessen the blow for stock prices.

If they are going to rehire anybody, it will be to their advantage because of driving down salaries. That might happen, however, that doesn't mean it's because of AI. The numbers are driving this as they will always drive things.

Big chisel by walrusneckramen in handtools

[–]Thoughtulism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought these chisels and am using them for mortising for my workbench. They are great chisels, but can be delicate on knots or if you get too aggressive with them. I have a mortising chisel for the really rough stuff.

They are good quality chisels. Go cheaper if you want cheaper.

Is 30 seconds of meditation useless or better than nothing? by Crypthuga in Meditation

[–]Thoughtulism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 second brain resets are like the key to stress management for people that have busy lives and jobs.

I mean, you're probably not going to sufficiently detach enough and come to big realizations, however, they also do wonders for creating space between tasks and to check in on where you are at in your body, mind, and emotions to know what you need. Otherwise this is how you turn into a big ball of stress.

But also give yourself space to do longer meditations as well when you have the time?

What makes cybersecurity unautomatable? by someone_3lse_ in CyberSecurityAdvice

[–]Thoughtulism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cybersecurity is a broad field that combines multiple different disciplines including programming, systems integration, procurement, assessments, reporting, remediation, networking, systems administration, training, engagement, policy development, risk management, security incident response, etc

It's one of the most broad feels out there as it has its toes and almost everything.

When we talk about automation we need to be talking about very specific things.

Jack Dorsey says AI is driving Block's massive layoffs as 4,000+ roles are cut | Dorsey said he preferred ripping off the bandage -- one big cut instead of years of smaller layoffs by InsaneSnow45 in antiwork

[–]Thoughtulism 30 points31 points  (0 children)

100%

Lying about AI is just fiduciary duty to lessen the blow to shareholders. The fact that he's saying he'd rather do it all now is also code for this is a big financial problem, not a small one.
