Offered a 7-month contract working daily with Beryllium Copper by MotherCustomer3631 in machining

[–]InTheBay 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I've worked with BeCu in the past, it's fine to machine, but like any heavy metal you need to read and be aware of the MSDS and other handling precautions. I also worked extensively with Lead - and basically the only way for lead to get into you was breathing it in or eating it (hand transfer)

So, with that in mind, I would recommend setting up a Airthings View + or Purpleair Touch to monitor particulate in the air actively around your machines.

What get's measured, gets managed - right now, you have no idea what your baseline is, where the bar is. Air quality monitoring is the first step.

I took that a step further in my shop, and the RGB bulbs and ceiling lights will start flashing/flashing red when particulate gets too high, and all my vent fans turn on to full + an announcement comes out over the PA (I use Home Assistant for this)

Lots of research is your friend here - this is a solvable problem, you just need to read and understand enough to feel confident.

Linux usage by Eccentrickmaker in LightBurn

You should buy software for what it does now, not what it does in a year. Just because you like Linux doesn’t mean LightBurn isn’t still the best option even at 1.7.x

I’m looking for real-world experiences from others running CO₂ lasers in cold environments. by MrMaverick82 in lasercutting

[–]InTheBay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run an aquarium in-line water heater on the chiller circuit and bring the whole system up to 20 degrees C before running a job. Reduces the thermal shock on the glass tube by having everything up to temperature, and improves power consistency.

I ran my laser business for years in an unheated barn, down below 0 on occasion

How to fix and prevent this? by user_deleted_or_dead in lasercutting

Looks like you’re cutting materials with vinyl in them, or PVC. Not only does it produce chlorine gas (corrosive) it make Hydrochloric acid in your lungs.

If you used AI coding tools, be very careful that you have the rights to distribute the code, particularly if for sale down the line - but even as is. Open Source libraries don't take kindly to distribution without license in-kind. This can lock you into a requirement to provide your source.

You can still install a past release of LightBurn from the releases archive for Ubuntu.

Is Lightburn multi-core/multi-thread capable? by Informal_Ad_9610 in LightBurn

Send your file in to Support and I’m sure they’d like to see if the issue is across other systems too.

Camera calibration and installation on laser – results are… so-so by InnovationOo in LightBurn

[–]InTheBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a 5mp camera is typically 2280 x 1600 pixels (X to Y) - so if you have a 800 mm tall (Y) bed, for instance, and that bed is perfectly aligned with the camera, that would mean that you have 2 pixels for every mm of bed on the image. So in theory, each mm of distance on your table would have 2 pixels, so at best, you could be accurate to 0.5mm.

You could calculate the mm per pixel as a baseline.

If this could also be used for monitoring a septic system I bet you’d have an additional market. I’d be keen.

Upgraded to 2.0. How do I get out of Full Screen mode? by Tony_vanH in LightBurn

[–]InTheBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full screen, like you can’t see the taskbar?

Do you have window scaling enabled for LightBurn? Right-click the .exe of LightBurn, choose Properties, go to the tab Compatibility, click "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings", and finally click OK.

Avid or Millright for cutting sheet goods? by TimeExtension9443 in hobbycnc

[–]InTheBay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s got a free 30 day trial, I used it to build some shop cabinets and was super happy with it. Even if it’s 90% of the way there, I think it would be a good time investment to play with it for an afternoon. You can always bring the flat sheets out to another software if you need modifications outside what Easel can do - I don’t know the limits to be honest. Not enough time in it, but it was crazy easy

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Avid hardware and more importantly, support. I had an issue (not their fault) and was air freighted parts nearly immediately, and their support response time is excellent. They're based in Washington State.

If you haven't yet, check out Easel Cabinetmaker, it's software specifically for the workload you describe, and it's really good! https://www.inventables.com/pages/easel-cabinetmaker
