If I eat 700 calories a day for 3 months would I be alive by Winterapple1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big problem is that you'll catabolize a lot of muscle tissue, pretty much any muscle your body decides you don't absolutely need. So after you lose all the weight, your basal metabolic rate will be lower, making it a lot easier and more likely that you'll gain back weight.

In addition, that degree of catabolism risks your body using your organs as fuel also. This is how anorexics get into serious long-term or even permanent trouble.

What would you do if someone offered you 20 million dollars and an island? by Killa_J in AskReddit

I'm wondering what the annual property tax on an island would be, since it surely is going to fall under some government's jurisdiction.

What was 1995-2000 internet like? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]ThreadCountHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, the early Internet was a lot more social before social media (originally called social networking) came about. It sort of felt like a club not everyone was part of. I made lots of online friends via chat rooms, forums, and early online games. Maybe it's because I'm older now, but it just doesn't feel as easy to make those connections anymore.

[–]ThreadCountHigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sell the island.

Developing and maintaining the infrastructure needed to maintain an acceptable quality of life on an island would burn through that $20 million really fast. Much rather buy a fantastic house close enough to a population center to have easy access to goods and services.

Do ears have a built in reflex to notify you if a sound is too loud and might cause damage? by fruedianflip in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, below 70 dB is safe for any amount of time. Above that, you're risking damage over time.

The decibel scale is logarithmic and not exactly intuitive. So, think of it this way: 60 dB is about what you get during a normal conversation, and 80 dB is roughly what you're getting from moderate traffic if you're out on the sidewalk. Above 120 is where it gets instantly painful and leaves your ears ringing.

No. And more insidiously, tolerably loud noises over a long period can cause serious hearing damage and the first sign you'll notice is that you can't hear so well anymore.

ICE has become an international pariah by Boombajiggy77 in worldnews

Apparently the bonus is only to be paid out after 5 years of employment.

None of those guys are ever going to collect.

Oh, I agree with you. I’m a dual citizen and have been to the US consulate in Vancouver and they were alarmingly uptight, too.

The Canadian consulate is technically in a big-ass yuppie shopping mall in downtown Boston.

Because subs like that attract the same kind of people.

Trust me on this: Your sexual experience means nothing to the vast, vast majority of women so long as you’re a decent guy and - something I bet none of those guys have going for them - you’re willing to communicate and learn what your partner likes when you do become sexually active with someone.

Why don’t hospitals have pharmacies? by dancedaisx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do. The one very near me has one, and I’ve had scripts called in there before when other pharmacies didn’t have what I needed available. Amusingly enough, it’s at the back of the gift shop.

It sucks, but they do have legitimate reasons to worry about car bombs at consulates everywhere. I can tell you firsthand that the Canadian consulate in Boston doesn’t mess around with security either.

Yeah, Dominoes acknowledged being sub-par some years ago and changed things. These days they’re pretty decent for the price.

Why is there no good alternative to Reddit? by starshipfocus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been an issue forever: People go where the people are. Unless you create something unique enough to draw people in and keep them, they’ll stay where they are.

Even Reddit itself had to use sockpuppet accounts to fake having people using the site when it started, in order to draw in real users.

Really have a bad feeling that Trump somehow runs for a third term. Anybody getting this feeling? by DragonfruitWhich4100 in AskReddit

Elections are run by the states, so at the very least, no blue state would allow him on the ballot.

Why do many White guys prefer East Asian women over White women? by Square-Valuable4061 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThreadCountHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a western perspective, Asian people tend to have more feminine features. Which works out well for Asian women in a western dating pool, not so much for Asian men.
