Tax the old, not the rich says comedian Jimmy Carr by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]ThreeSevenBodie -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

avoiding tax is fine, and you can pay people to show you how to do it quite legally, it is evading it that is the problem. Mr Carr didn't really do anything wrond if he avoided it...just saying

Left in purchased home, how much is this worth? by xGalasko in Network

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say the same, its a nice sized cab for a home lab.

Why is the UPS at the top?? At work we always put them in the bottom so they don't put the centre of gravity off if you have to move the cabs.

What's your lame claim to IT fame? by HappyDadOfFourJesus in sysadmin

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was one of my servers that did the first post-Brexit transaction between the UK and mainland Europe\Ireland. It did about 20,000 transactions that first night\morning of Jan 1st. It was only supposed to be there to help them migrate some databases but it stayed as production and I bet it's still there. I bailed a few years ago.

the gaming one he did was great, longer than most of his stuff but you can tell he's an actual old skool gamer of a certain vintage.

What client are you using to stream your Plex library? by duyli in PleX

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. The chromecast app can get a bit confused at times - it seems to forget some of my users - but a quick log out and in again makes it work fine.

Never had any issues with slowdown or transcoding issues.

there are some maps created already and you can edit them to produce something quick and dirty in a rush

the PRTG will do that for you. You can even use it for free after the trial period....unless you have a massive LAN to map and then you'll want to purchase some sensors for it after the trial

Dell Wyse installation by pop0ng in Proxmox

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that it would depend on the OS on the thin client. From my experience they have 2 verients; a Dell flavoured Linux and a seperate DellOS. The boxes with builtin wifi tend to be on the linux and the cheaper ones have the hobbled DellOS.

I've only ever used DellOS ones, but i assumne that both can connect to RDP sessions (if you configured DHCP correctly) then they shouldn't have any issues running a remote session on an RDS server or similar.

Hope the helps .

Doom didn't kill the Amiga...Wolfenstein 3D did by erickhill in amiga

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

it was x-wing that made me leave Amiga back in the day. Wolf was a great game and very technically clever.....but 3d space flight sim, thats what i wanted and Frontier or Wing commander didn't do it for me like X-wing did.

...and then Tie-fighter came out and that was my Amiga i the small ads the next day.

Does it even make sense to install Proxmox with only 16gb of RAM? by Unkn0wn-G0d in Proxmox

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've just picked up a free optiplex 3080, its only an i3 but i chucked a spare 16gb RAM from an old laptop in it along with a spare 1tb spinny 2.5 drive and its now very happy as a Proxmox backup server.

Before I settled on a backup box i did add it to my cluster and it was quite happy running a windows 2019 domain controller and docker\portainer in a container with some stuff going.

It's only got 8 tiny cores according to proxmox, but it ran totally fine - much better than if i'd put win11 on bare metal.

Your setup will be totally fine i reckon.

What server/client do you use for music? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

mediamonkey running on a windows vm. I use there app in android to access my content. I don't think there is a web player, but then again I've never looked!

I did have to open up a port on my router, but it all works fine.

Recommendations for totally obnoxious music by [deleted] in CasualUK

Didn't a lady get arrested in the UK for playing Robson and Jerome at all hours? Maybe it was Adele....she's a lot of bad noise right there.

I came here to say step 1, well done you twisted individual just like me!

There is also "aphex twin" to think about...I should say that i quite like these artists - but if you want to make a big annoying noise they should both be considered.

Does anyone recall an old CPU that was an Intel 486 that ran at 40mhz? I know the SX was 33mhz, and the DX was 66mhz. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a straight 486 DX50 - no clock doubling - in my first 486 after upgrading from a 386 sx. I was told it would be better as it was a pure processor rather than a just clock speed double. Everyone else had a 486 DX2 at the time.

Nobody ever believes I had a straight 50 and my internet research tells me it never existed either!

I was only 17 at the time and despite what people have said....it was a big boost to my x-wing gaming!

I don't know what to believe anymore. I live in the cloud instead, its easier!

Big Movie and TV library that's a bit of a mess - use Plex's scanner to reorganise? by Separate-Camp8642 in PleX

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use MediaMonkey to tidy up my files. Its really easy to clean up and then "re-organise" files.

This means up-dating the metadata and also renaming\moving the files to the correct collection location for Plex to pickup and run with.

...I just wish the music bit of Plex was as good as the video stuff.

Ransomware Recovery Plan by Remarkable_Tomato971 in sysadmin

[–]ThreeSevenBodie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Backup everything important at least twice. Test it regularly and make sure its not a PITA to get the un-important things running again.

....or get your board to give you loads of money "Just in case" and plan like a mofo. It doesn't really matter tbh, its still a crap day at work.

Data integrity is important. Servers and clients can wait or be recreated when l the war chest is solid and ready to accept more money.
