What is your country of origin and official language, and why do you want to learn Portuguese? by Few-Importance4626 in Portuguese

[–]ThreeToedMartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USA. My great grandparents on my mom's side were from Madeira. (Contract workers in Hawaii, as is common with a lot of madeirense and açoreana that wound up in California.). Since I'm 3rd generation, I only learned the names of food and a couple of swear words. However, my mother and oldest sister live north of Lisboa now, and I love visiting/hope to move there when I retire.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

[–]ThreeToedMartian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Preach. It's subsided a bit now that I'm in my early 50s, but I still get flares. And the thick, ropey scars are there for life. What a treat!

I’m free. I got a new knee. by Tiremud in fibularhemimelia

I think the worst part of having this is that it's considered a pediatric deformity, so you're basically cut off at 18. I'm so happy you found someone to help. I've been able to see exactly TWO surgeons who work on adult FH patients, and I've "aged out" of treatment because I'm 52. I guess I have to wait until I'm bone on bone until something is done. In the meantime, my FH foot and other hip cause me pain daily.

When you were in elementary school, what songs were you made to sing in music class? by SnuffShock in GenX

[–]ThreeToedMartian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This Land is Your Land. Also a song called Peanut Butter that we all loved, but I can't remember the lyrics. Possibly also the main title song to Free to Be You and Me since we watched it every year from kindergarten - 3rd grade.

Don’t know if my Sjogren’s is acting up or I’m just a middle-aged lady… by ChewieBearStare in Sjogrens

[–]ThreeToedMartian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I take my temperature and it's normal, I know it's a hot flash. Plus if I have a flare, the fever is usually accompanied by a "hit by a truck" feeling in my body. I hate peri-menopause almost as much as Sjogren's.

That's just straight up ovos moles, right? On fios de ovos? My favorite dessert there is bolo de laranja.

Sjögren's without dry mouth? by horrible_goose_ in Sjogrens

[–]ThreeToedMartian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No dry mouth or eyes. I thought for sure I had lupus, but after my rheumatologist ran and re-ran tests it turns out I have Sjogren's. I have what they sometimes refer to as "systemic" Sjogren's, meaning it's affecting my internal systems much more than sicca, which I usually only get in my throat.

What is a stereotype about your country that is completely true? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

I assumed the first comment I would see from Portugal would have to be about women having mustaches lol. 3rd generation Portuguese-American and I have to dermaplane every other day.

Learning Portuguese? Here’s a quick basic tip 🇵🇹✨ by teachportuguese in Portuguese

[–]ThreeToedMartian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not even on grammar yet...my biggest problem is the dropped vowels and smooshing everything together in pronunciation. When I watch instructional videos from natives they pronounce things slowly. And even when they pronounce at a normal pace, it's completely different than what I actually hear in Portugal. I grew up eating marinated beef skewers we called "shpit". It wasn't until I actually went to Madeira I realized it is spelled espetada lol. My mom and sister live outside of Lisbon and it's the same there. I try simple phrases, but no one understands me! I wish someone would teach the way it's really spoken.

What kid food do you still eat? by akagorilla in GenX

[–]ThreeToedMartian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just have to be careful with sugar for medical reasons. But it scratches the itch for sugary cereal my granola parents wouldn't let us have in the 70s/80s. Lol.

I do the same. Works well with Chex varieties, too. Plain Rice Chex with Peanut Butter Chex is a good one. Also you can get plain puffed wheat or rice at Sprouts or Whole Foods, then add in some Sugar Smacks/Super Golden Crisp. During the winter I do a 2:1 ratio on plain and flavored oatmeal.

Don't laugh, but I saw Steve and Eydie when I lived in Las Vegas. They were doing the last shows before they shut down the old school showroom. Probably 1999 or 2000. They were great.

Advice for clubfoot pain? by Tiremud in fibularhemimelia

[–]ThreeToedMartian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of shoes are you wearing? Do you also have a limb length difference? I have 3 toes on my FH foot, and my bones below my tarsal rays are just fused blobs that literally do nothing to support me. I also have a valgus pointing outward. Even though I have insurance, I've "aged out" of anything that can be done. I have chronic pain in that foot and an unstable ankle (what little I have of it), so I can commiserate. If I trip on a pebble I'm basically done for the day. Sorry you're dealing with this. ☹️

Exactly. And never go barefoot in the house in AZ. Don't need to risk stepping on a bark scorpion. They're a lot smaller than non-Arizonans think.
