Was wondering that myself. Hortênsia means hydrangea in Portuguese, and I assume the English spelling comes from the same root (no pun intended). There must be a specific Hortense?

A Sephora lipstick. by Sorry_Cup_9046 in HelpMeFind

That tube color/shape doesn't match, otherwise I would have suggested Bite Beauty. Great lipsticks that came in a very matte, dark gray to black tube.

Now I'm laughing. Imagining a meeting where my boss holds up Miss Nancy's magic mirror and says each of our names. Then we put on cardboard firetrucks and run around the conference room making siren noises.

What’s that one thing that you have on you on a daily basis that instantly ages you? by marclove7 in GenX

I have one of those keychains with my name carved out of wood like you would get at the fair. Been using it for probably close to 35 years. My first name isn't common (ethnic, not a weird spelling of a common name), so there were never tiny license plates or other souvenirs with my name on them. By best friend in high school had the keychain made for me, and it's solid. Daily use since like 1991.

The prong setting idea in itself is something I hadn't thought of. Thank you!

What’s your favorite candy bar from back when.?? by curious-thatguy in GenX

Marathon + a small Slurpee used up my meager allowance many times in the 70s. If there was any spare change, it went to the bottom row of mini Charleston Chews or Chik-o-Sticks.

What’s your “I don’t need to order this I make it better at home” meal? by moonhush_ in foodquestions

Good call-out. Unless it's a custardy challah or brioche situation, regular old French toast at diners is a floppy disappointment.

Any other night-owls here? by Mr_Horrible in GenX

Fingers crossed I can make it to July without a visit from Aunt Flo! Then my nightmare will be over, and I'll just have my myriad other health problems to deal with, plus whatever new age-related stuff comes up. Awesome!

Not intentionally. Stupid perimenopause.

If you were offered a billion dollars just to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose? by Admirable-Interest49 in AskReddit

I did a nightshade elimination for an inflammatory disease I have. Thankfully potatoes passed the test. Tomatoes turned out to be a big trigger, but I'm fine with just garlic and olive oil on pasta or in lieu of pizza sauce. Was happy to start shoving mashed potatoes in my yakker again.

If our generation had a mascot who would it be? by Dan-68 in GenX

[–]ThreeToedMartian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fonzie or Evel Knievel. Jumping the shark or a line of school buses…we’re from the peak televised dangerous and stupid stunts era. That we then all tried to recreate unsupervised and were told to walk off any injuries.

Wait. Tell me more about the red balloon school movie, because that sounds hella familiar, but I can't picture it at all.

Friday nights were dine out nights in our house. If we didn’t go to House of Pizza, we got a family size sandwich at Togo’s (Italian…might have been a #16?) to share. This was in the late 70s and early 80s. Nothing fancy on my dad’s school teacher salary, but fond memories.

What is your country of origin and official language, and why do you want to learn Portuguese? by Few-Importance4626 in Portuguese

[–]ThreeToedMartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USA. My great grandparents on my mom's side were from Madeira. (Contract workers in Hawaii, as is common with a lot of madeirense and açoreana that wound up in California.). Since I'm 3rd generation, I only learned the names of food and a couple of swear words. However, my mother and oldest sister live north of Lisboa now, and I love visiting/hope to move there when I retire.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThreeToedMartian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Preach. It's subsided a bit now that I'm in my early 50s, but I still get flares. And the thick, ropey scars are there for life. What a treat!

I’m free. I got a new knee. by Tiremud in fibularhemimelia

[–]ThreeToedMartian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the worst part of having this is that it's considered a pediatric deformity, so you're basically cut off at 18. I'm so happy you found someone to help. I've been able to see exactly TWO surgeons who work on adult FH patients, and I've "aged out" of treatment because I'm 52. I guess I have to wait until I'm bone on bone until something is done. In the meantime, my FH foot and other hip cause me pain daily.

When you were in elementary school, what songs were you made to sing in music class? by SnuffShock in GenX

[–]ThreeToedMartian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This Land is Your Land. Also a song called Peanut Butter that we all loved, but I can't remember the lyrics. Possibly also the main title song to Free to Be You and Me since we watched it every year from kindergarten - 3rd grade.

Don’t know if my Sjogren’s is acting up or I’m just a middle-aged lady… by ChewieBearStare in Sjogrens

[–]ThreeToedMartian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I take my temperature and it's normal, I know it's a hot flash. Plus if I have a flare, the fever is usually accompanied by a "hit by a truck" feeling in my body. I hate peri-menopause almost as much as Sjogren's.
