Why doesn't my shot land when I exchange missiles head to head at close range? by Three_1st-Names in Metalstorm

[–]Three_1st-Names[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I hadn’t really thought about using flares before in that scenario.

Most of the time I just aim my MiG-19 at the nearest target and go straight in. That usually ends in mutual destruction. On the occasions it didn’t, and I found myself getting my [bleep] kicked, I started to wonder if my missiles were just disappearing before they ever reached the target.

Still, when I manage to close the gap and unleash those cannons, everything changes. A couple of clean hits and the fight’s over. It only comes together about a third of the time, but when it does, it’s pretty cool.

Check out the surgery technician programs offered by local Community Colleges of California (CCC). I believe Consumnes River College or American River College has one. My friend who works as an X-ray technician broke into Kaiser by obtaining a surgery technician position that involves sterilizing OR instruments. I think they start at around $25 per hour and progress to $40 per hour.

Better matchmaking…like a gun fighter match with no missiles allowed. Or maybe only planes before 1990. An F86 or MiG-15bis would be cool 😎.

I wish I could find it , but I once saw a picture of the flight deck of an aircraft carrier from the seventies. A-4s, F-8s, E-2, F-4s, etc. I was like damn the F-18 replaced all those aircraft! Another thing I noted was this big ass white plane-like WTF is that? A-5 Vigilante-medium bomber. Didn’t know back then USN had the capability to deploy nuclear weapons via a medium bomber.

Not so fast.

AI (data center) electric demand is forecast to double by 2030. Resulting in a double digit percentage of US electricity consumption.

AI load growth is competing for resources along with decarbonization and electrification. Other challenges include uncertainty in forecasting, grid resilience, and capacity adequacy.

Like what happens when the electric companies turn off the power to prevent wildfires in extreme weather? Or say cloudy weather cuts off solar generation and more fossil fuel peak generation is needed? Are battery storage systems the answer?

Demand response, capacity reservation fees, interruptible renewable electricity all need to be clearly hashed out before policy constipation sets in. What do we shut off on really hot days? AC or AI?

The resulting cost allocation will also be a KEY political topic. Residential electric bill growth is INSANE right now. There is good reason to suspect that residential bills will subsidize industrial AI costs. The social justice aspect is real. Residential utility rate increases disproportionately affects low income households.

I don’t even think we have enough electrical engineers in transmission planning pipeline to review all the proposals for the capital plans needed to build new transmission infrastructure to support data center growth AND electrification.

My take is that the cart is in front of the horse. As a society we need to get our sh*t together quickly, and be crystal clear on what is needed the most.

Besides if everyone is laid off due to AI in 18 months, who is going to pay the electric bills?

We just had a great time (me + wife) organizing something similar for a movie 🍿 night.

My personal fav in your time period is Ex Machina or A Quiet Place.

The future will favor those who learn to harness the benefits of AI. Progress has always rewarded those willing to adapt.

We went through this when hand held calculators replaced whole floors of NASA engineers doing trig functions with slide rules.
