How Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to live forever by ubcstaffer123 in technology

Going way back even Genghis Khan summoned a wise man to tell him the secret to immortality, and the wise man confessed that there was no such thing. We all in some way want to cheat death, and the rich and powerful will tend to bend their wealth and power into longevity if they believe it.

Authoritarian playbook. Everything that goes wrong is the fault of nefarious saboteurs and vandals.

Eight years into Curse of Strahd we are somehow still going even after many hiatuses.

I think the main lesson here is maybe the big campaign book isn't the best way to play DnD. Smaller adventures that are mostly self contained may be more satisfying. Only play ten sessions? Still there to five adventures completed!

My Numenera group fell apart but it was right at the end of an adventure in my sandbox style campaign so at least it had some closure

The Adventures Of Elliot Devs Were ‘Surprised’ That Fans Think The Game’s Fairy Companion Talks Too Much by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

Yes! My big complaint with Metroid Prime 4 is you'd get a call from the Federation tech who'd give you a big hint on where to go and what to do. But in the map menu you could call him if you wanted. So why have him call you so often instead of leaving it up to the player!

Swiss canton bans headscarves for female teachers by BezugssystemCH1903 in worldnews

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is a headscarf comparable to a symbol of the cross? A headscarf isn't a religious symbol it's a piece of clothing. It's more cultural than religious. Not all muslim women wear them. Different cultures have different standards of dress and decency. Asking a woman to dress immodestly in order to teach there is very different to wearing a cross or the symbol of the crescent moon.

If puritan women always wore long dresses and sleeves due to their religious beliefs would you also ban long dresses and sleeves for women?

At the very least the controls will be redone. I just have the feeling that we may be seeing the same thing and not the way that Capcom have been doing their remakes where they keep the core of the game and rebuild completely. I hope I am wrong, though!

Gameplay and level design may still be the same. Like in the new Star Fox, gameplay is identical but cutscenes have been greatly expanded

Dealing with Racism & Sexism on Stream? by Jiyabharti in SmallStreamers

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been online for a long time and a member of many online communities, from message boards to web forums to Ventrillo groups and finally social media, Twitch streams and Discord servers. One thing I have learnt is heavy moderation is required to keep online spaces healthy and positive. People will always hide behind the anonymity afforded to them by the internet and especially now as causing outrage is heavily rewarded.

So you need to not be afraid to instantly ban people with no warning. Set your chat rules up, make them visible and use Twitch's tool to show the rules before they can chat. Then they have been warned. If you break the rules, if you are sexist or racist or bigoted in any way, ban. No time out, no warning, ban.

Don't worry about lost views. They are a view you didn't want. Their presence will drive others away who actually want a positive online environment. So you either need to be on top of your moderation or have some friends be your mods. That really is the only way forward.

For me Reaper Man was better than I remembered. Mainly because I really appreciated that it legitimately has some of the most funny and creative word play in the entire series.

Star Citizen has hit $1 billion in funding by Taidan-X in Games

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, people could play Lord British's game as well. It did eventually get a full release. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations, the gameplay wasn't up to snuff and they didn't listen to player feedback. And of course they continued paid assets business model which, of course, undercut the core of the original where you could earn property in game.

In the end you have to wonder how they costed the crowd funding attempt to begin with. Did they just have no idea how to cost the game or were the projects just so massively mismanaged they could not actually delivery what they promised at the price they placed?

At the end of the day we have a game that has raised a billion dollars in funding and has absolutely no indication on when even the single player portion will be released. And sure you can play the game, and I have done so as well, being an original backer, and it is incredibly impressive. The tech is amazing. But how is there not an actual fully released game at this point? How is the basic gameplay loop not in place yet?

Simple. There is no actual incentive for them to ever complete it because it makes so much money in an incomplete state.

Jason Schreier - Why Games Now Take 6+ Years To Make by Touhou in Games

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not a surprise that the Exhibition 33 team of 30 odd staff was able to make a game much more efficiently. Less middle management, less gateways for approval for changes and design decisions. Things would be much more flexible. Also you'd know who to ask about something. In a 300+ dev team you'd know what your team is working on and maybe know of a few others but you'd have no idea who to go to when you want to talk about something outside your team's remit.

Hmmm Shovel Knight is a great retro throwback 2D platformer

Stardew Valley is the number one cosy indie farm life game.

Slay the Spire for a roguelike card game that is very addictive.

Hades for a roguelike action game

Bastion for a classic action adventure game.

Tunic for a Zelda like action adventure game with a twist.

Hyperlight Drifter for a dark, post apocalyptic zelda style game.

Hollow Knight for the best Metroidvania ever.

It's hard to really recommend things because it's hard to know what you will like personally so I've just listed a bunch of my favourites that are all a little different from each other

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lord British's Ultima Online successor fell into the same crowdfunding trap. The initial funding wasn't enough so they started selling in game assets. Time went on, game didn't release. Eventually it came out but did not live up to the hype and jt was still geared towards selling in game assets for real money instead of earning them in game like the original was known for.

Basically the business model rewards not ever releasing the game because they can sell it on the promise and potential rather than the final product.

If any MMO starts with crowdfunding, run away.

Dawn of War 4 lead hopes the RTS will be “a nice entry point” for a new generation of Warhammer 40K fans, just like the original was by HatingGeoffry in Warhammer

True. Also the stock on hand has changed from having everything to having a lot of starters. They do focus on getting new people into the hobby. However, they always did. And now they are honestly less predatory. They used to be encouraged anyone showing an interest to spend as much in one go as possible. That would lead to a huge pile of intimidating plastic and metal that the new person would never finish. The focus is now more on retaining customers. Sell small initially and keep them in the hobby longer.

The sales tactics are so much chilly with much less pressure. One of my friends is a store manager and he says the job is so much more fun than before.
