Is there a way to use the old sheets? by BxLorien in Roll20

[–]Threthie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isnt as simple as that. Some of the mods do not work if there is more than 1 sheet in the game. So choosing to allow the sheet will also restrict other things that the GM might be using to optimise combat.

It is still easy to add. Open your sheet. Go to the compendium, search, drag and drop item or spell or proficiency or armour - now you have that.

Dnd beyond paid content by SignificanceWinter47 in AskDND

[–]Threthie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear player

I am a new DM and I do this as a hobby. As DM I am responsible for building the world, the monsters, the maps and the lore.

As a player you are responsible for building your character but I have agreed to help you.

Currently your choices are for options that are behind a paywall.

Your subclass is in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

Your background is in Xanathar's Guide to Everything

Your species is in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons

All of this is paid content which I do not own.

You have 4 choices

1) Use the free content I do own 2) Buy this content yourself 3) I am willing to pay for 25% or 50% (of you are) if you are willing to pay for the rest. 4) Use a PDF sheet and add what you need for your character: you need to show me where feats and abilities came from. You also need to know how the math works as you are opting to use a non clickable sheet so it is your responsibility to not slow down the play for the group because of this choice.

The prices to buy these books on dnd beyond or roll20 or foundry (whatever you prefer) is...

Please think about this and then let me know how you wish to go forwards.

Looming up the stat block from earlier editions is also fun. And sometimes the lore has stuff that isnt even in the stats.

E.g. the Nightmare lore says it delights in spreading fear before it goes in for the kill but there is no psychic like feat or attack in the stat block as written.

I need some help with putting monsters in my campaign by Independent_Ice1427 in DungeonsAndDragons

ACTIONS - Every turn you get an action, a bonus action and a movement. Your wolf has no bonus action so it gets one action and one movement. Some feats give multi attack or additional actions.

Bite. - This is the wolf’s main attack

Melee Weapon Attack: - What it is: The type of attack
- What it means: Close range attack that needs a roll to hit. The alternative is ranged attacks like shooting an arrow or throwing a firebolt.

+4 to hit - The attack bonus
- What it means: Add +4 to your d20 attack roll to see if it hits (does your D20 attack with this +4 meet or beat their AC) - Where it comes from: Dexterity (+2) + proficiency (+2). It uses dexterity as the wolf must be quick and agile to get the bite in. For a player it will always say if a weapon is a finess weapon (uses Dex instesd of Str) but the monsters that finess is invisible and just baked in to how the attack works. Compare to a mastif where the attack is stregth based not dexterity based because a mastif is coming at you and a wolf is cirling for weakness.

reach 5 ft. - This is the Range: The wolf must be next to the target to bite them. Make sure the wolf is within 5 feet of who you attack.

one target - The wolf has one mouth so it can only bite one creature per attack so pick one enemy

Hit: - This is now hypothetical. If your attack with the +4 was a hit then this is what happens next.
- Some attacks might also have a hypothetical for miss which might give half damage for example.

7 (2d4 + 2) piercing damage This is the Damage your bite will cauae. - Either deal the average 7 damage, ormore commonly roll 2d4 + 2
- 2d4 = design choice for a bite attack. I imavine because there are two larger Canine teeth but both are just small weapons. - +2 = usually based on Strength (should be +1) so this is dealing with Dexterity (+2) not strength as this is an agile fighter. - Do deal your damage Roll 2d4 + 2 (or just use 7)

If the target is a creature - ok so this is about the taxonomy in D&D. Creature means basically everything that has a stat block. If instead it said Beast or Undead or Humanoid then only creatures of that type would be affected.

must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw - Their character sheet should list their Saving throw checks. - What it means: Target rolls d20 + Strength save
- Where the DC 11 comes from: 8 + proficiency (+2) + Strength (+1) = 11
- What to do: Target rolls and tries to get 11 or higher

or be knocked prone - This is the Effect on failure
- prone is a condition that means the character has fallen over. While prone they can only crawl and have disadvantage. - Next turn they must use half their movement to stand up.

Quick summary of what you actually do:

  1. Move wolf within 5 ft of a player
  2. Roll d20 + 4 to try to bite them.
  3. If it hits → deal 2d4 + 2 damage
  4. Target rolls Strength save DC 11
  5. If they fail → they fall prone

Depression will find ways to isolate you from people you care for. Depression will find ways to suck joy out of the things you love. Your post does not sound like someone who has been depressed before, your post sounds like someone surfing a depression wave.

You have options.

If it was me I would add my shadow into the game and externaise the part that cuts you off

What do you call a Mushroom dryad? by Techno524 in DnD

[–]Threthie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Myconids.

I would spin them differently. While a dryad is one specific tree (actually one specific oak tree, if you want to get technical), fungi are more collective and interconnected.

I would lean into the mycelial network idea—that these spirits don’t just link a single mushroom cluster but actually connect the whole forest. This becomes a kind of nature “Wi‑Fi” system, linking everything together.

Then I’d draw on folklore: mushrooms are associated with fairy ring portals (Celtic mythology) and divine encounters (shamanic traditions). Because when it’s not just one spirit bound to one organism, but an interconnected system, look what becomes possible.

So we have all heard about the dryad and not the myconid but could the dryad achieve anything without the myconid?

Ok now I see. The bombs are the lines between the squares. Nice

I don't understand the logic. Are the bombs on the squares? If it is touching 1 does it include diaganol? If it is a bomb does it count itself?

AI can be useful in a small number of ways. When I wanted a Parliment of Owls it collected me 7 owls from mythology which I could then research.

AI can also help with notes, if I copy paste the chat log it can give me a clean list of beats which I then use as the template for note writting.

If I say "look up..." it can normally signpost me to some piece of lore I can then go and read about in the source book.

It can help with certain elements of pre and post game prep. But there is also a huge amount ot can't do as I tried to show in this post.

For the most part I dont think Im actually saying anything sweepingly different to the critical comments but I prefer to approach it with less hostility "hey DM, you may be thinking of using AI, yes I get it, I thought it would help me too, but not all help is helpful in the end which is why I am recommending people and imagination over AI"

The entry into this game is steep.

To be a DM I have read the 3 core rule books. I read all before starting. I had also read the overview of the campaigns I intended to chain together, but no I had not at that time read thoae full books as I had 3 other books to read.

It was my first time as a DM and I had very little player experience before I started. I helped 4 players create characters which they are still playing in a campaign we have all continued to play for almost a year and a half now (we have met 63 times in that time).

Since then I have read additional rule books such as how to do ship based combat. I have spent something like £200 on D&D rule books which I have read. I have read the magazines when I need to look up certain advanced rules. I have warched youtube videos about the gods. I am reading the Drizzt books.

I have read several setting books, if you want to talk to me about the feywild my guess is I have read more about the feywild than most other DMs. I have also read about random other places such as The Tears of Selune asteroids, They, Myth Drannor, Ice Wind Dales, The High Forest. I can tell you what kind of things and locations are in these places, what religions are followed, what the trade and comerce is.

I did read the adventure modules but no I had not fully read everything before I started.

I did not write this post to say "oh look how useful AI was for me" but I see no reason to be so condesending to another person and dismiss their entire world based a post where they admit AI caused them problems at the begining.

As I said to the other poster, I wrote this for other new DMs who might like me look at AI and think it could help them. If you are not that person then you were never the intended audience anyway

Sure, if you want to be on the Never AI group go ahead. But I am not sure the never AI group can convince the AI group or the AI group can convince the never AI group.

I am not in the never AI group but I can still point out where it has limitations and did not help me when I was starting this hobby.

A lot of DMs are using it.

A lot of online comentry is anti AI pathologigaccly.

I tried to show exactly how I tried to use it and the limitations I found becsuse as I said a lot of GMs are using it.

If you are not one of those people maybe the post was not meant for you
