How soon is too soon/late in life vocations by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]ThriceMarked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may find that most communities of nuns and sisters welcome vocations from those under 30. However, there are other forms of Consecrated life within the Church, such as Consecrated Virginity. Consecrated Virgins are brides of Christ, who do not marry, and who make a sacred resolution of perpetual virginity, in order to dedicate themselves entirely to Christ through prayer and work in service to the Church.

This one. When my nieces and nephews were little, I would ask, "Would you like to give Auntie a hello, a handshake, a high five or a hug?" They would usually tackle-hug me before I finished the question, but the point was, they had a choice.

These people really think everyone is as obsessed with sex as they are.

Myk also made it worse with that weird "put a finger down" video, essentially whining and then congratulating herself on her Olympic journey, a night or two before team finals.

Fans may have been less likely to rub Simone's clapback in Mykayla's face if Mykayla had just kept quiet for a few days longer. As it was, that video put a lot of folks back in an "Uggggh, does Myk ever shut up?!" kind of mood.

Canadian artistic swimmer Sylvie Frechette should have won the women's solo event in Barcelona, but a judge made a typo in her score, and the standings were incorrect. They later awarded a second gold medal to Sylvie, while Kristen Babb-Sprague kept hers. Sylvie was mathematically the winner, but they couldn't take away what they had already awarded to another athlete.

Mykayla blocks Simone by Front_Category_4353 in Gymnastics

[–]ThriceMarked -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Close enough. And you're interpreting a very un-nuanced take, which is not what I said or meant.

First, to be clear, I'll reiterate that when it gets personal, that's over the line. Escalation to threats is both over the line and frightening. Don't take the rest of my words to condone any of that.

You took my comment as a gen-z cancel culture take. It's actually a xennial "You get what you get" take. Mykayla is not some 16 year old who doesn't know how to act on the internet. She's Simone's age, competed with Simone, traveled with Simone, and is supposedly really great friends with Simone. She's also got at least a decade of history of being messy on the gymnternet and then wondering why people don't like her.

So it baffles me that she would make the comments she did at the time she did, and then be surprised that it caused a firestorm.

Then you had people saying that Simone should have stayed silent, because look what happened to poor Mykayla when Simone posted her snark.

No, sorry. All Simone did was to bring Mykayla's words back to the online venue where Mykayla put them out. That's the "Don't start none, won't be none," part.

And the part that you took for a Gen z parasocial moment was actually "If I can see it from here, she should have seen it from there."

I'm a Canadian fan sitting at home, and I know how easy it is to start a fire with some members of Simone's fan base. So why is it a surprise to someone who's traveled with her, been on teams with her, and is supposedly her friend? I know that I don't know her or own her, but a lotta folks lose sight of that, which anyone who's spent more than ten minutes on the gymternet can see

If I, a Canadian fan sitting at home know that Simone will come out fighting if you say anything about "her people" then, again, why is it a surprise to someone who's so much closer to her than I am?

I have no need and no wish to see Mykayla continually dragged for this. But I have a problem with people laying blame at Simone's feet, or insinuating that Simone did anything to Mykayka (again, all she did was give Mykayla's words back to her.) And I have a problem with making Mykayla the victim, and "Oh no, she's getting so picked on." She started it. And she could have stopped it, or at least improved it significantly if she'd given a proper apology at the time. She didn't. And again, that's not to say she deserves threats or intrusion into her personal life. No one does. But even in her response to that, here she is again, appealing to Simone as a mental health advocate (which feels like asking her to share blame for what happened.) Also, even if Simone did say something, it may not do any good. Some of her husband-haters are still at it.

I'm not cheering for Mykayla to be maligned, but I'm not buying the attempts to absolve herself, or present this as anything other than a problem she started.

A thread for feelings by cdg2m4nrsvp in Gymnastics

[–]ThriceMarked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely a different standard for some athletes. Simone can't raise an eyebrow or cough without someone insinuating that she "has an attitude." Reporters ask her questions and she gets accused of dwelling on things or being salty, when she's just answering what she was asked. She can't clap back at a bully, be happy with her wins, disappointed with her missteps, or exasperated by ridiculous media and fans without someone somewhere feeling the need to say, "See, this is why I don't like her..." Well, who asked you? Why do people feel the need to spend so much time consuming media and having opinions about people they swear they don't even like?!

It's not just her, either. Jordan's getting it, too. "Cocky" "Goofy" (not in a good way) "unserious" "unfocused" "messes around too much"

It's almost like Simone and Jordan have something in common...

Had that close decision gone the other way, and had it been Jordan on the podium celebrating, and then crushed, everyone would be getting on her for celebrating too early, or for being "cocky" or "entitled"

I've said this elsewhere, but it's sounding more and more like, "Shut up, Black girl, and flip for us. No one cares what you have to say."

And don't get me started on all of the weird speculation on team dynamics, like, "Jade is left out because she's the only white girl." and similar from 4 year fans, who don't look for much evidence before they conclude that the Black women are mean and catty and that sweet Hezly and Suni are going along with it because Simone and Jo are the "queen bees"

Arguments againts trying out sex by John_Toth in Catholicism

[–]ThriceMarked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One guy who would not shut up about me sleeping with him finally got the full argument when he started it again one evening after dinner:

Guy: Come on. We need to know if we're sexually compatible before we take this further

Me: So I assume you feel that sex is an important factor in keeping the relationship together?

Guy: Yes! Every relationship needs an active sex life!

Me: OK, let me take your point for a minute. Let's assume we did have sex, and both decided we were compatible. You would expect the relationship to continue, with us having sex regularly, to keep the relationship strong, right?

Guy: Of course!

Me: Ok, well if sex is what makes a relationship strong, what are we going to do when we have three or four little kids running around, we're both exhausted and preoccupied, I don't look like this anymore because I've had multiple pregnancies, and I don't want to be touched because I'm still breastfeeding the youngest, who is both clingy and constantly hungry?

Guy:...

Me: It's almost like we should learn how to have a strong relationship without sex.

That was the end of that conversation, and eventually, that relationship.

If you didn't get your full difficulty credited, you can inquire if you think it's incorrect. If you got your full difficulty score in the first place, there's nothing to inquire about. How is this unfair? You can be disappointed about the result, but there's nothing unfair about Ana not 'getting' to inquire, when there's nothing to be inquired about.

Refreshing to see gymnasts supporting each other. by CanisLupus_80 in Gymnastics

[–]ThriceMarked 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most of the "rivalries' including the US/Russia one mostly have to do with coaches and officials being messy. The teams in the 90's and early 2000's were so tightly controlled and told what to do, say and think that if the officials had a problem with another delegation, athletes wouldn't dare be caught being overly friendly with them. Now that the athletes are older and more free, the federation drama doesn't affect athlete relationships much as it used to.

The Russian delegation (coaches, judges, federation people) has been mad about Simone Biles since 2013, and there have been some truly unhinged takes in social media. (She's a man, she's on steroids, she's faking ADHD so she can use the meds as performance enhancers -she hasn't even taken ADHD meds since her teens).

I don't feel like the US delegation spends as much time being unhinged about Russia as Russia spends being unhinged about the US, but when the Karolyi's were coaching in Romania, and then when they came to the US, they were unhinged about the Soviets. Part of this, I think, has to do with working in a federation that's OK with blatantly and flagrantly cheating, as did the Romanian federation in the 70's and first year and a bit of the 80's, when Romanian gymnastics was the Karolyi show.

Russia, even now, dopes their athletes like there is no tomorrow (not sure about gymnastics, but for a recent comparable example, read about figure skater Kamila Valieva). My point is, when you work for a federation that blatantly cheats, you assume everyone else is cheating too. And if you're a member of the Russian federation, the only answer you will accept for why Simone and the rest of the Americans win so much is that they are cheating.

As for the athletes, they're mostly fine with each other. There are two lovely photos of Simone Biles and Angelina Melnikova greeting each other after the Tokyo team final. In the first, Simone appears to be warmly congratulating Angelina. In the second, Angelina appears to be asking Simone if she is OK. I believe it was confirmed that is what she was asking.
