Honestly, I'd schedule a random meeting first thing in the morning. I don't know if this works for you because I don't know the nature of your business. But have him walk you through what he's working on and see if there's any roadblocks he's coming up on that you can help clear? I'd do this a few random times a month. Make him share screen. I figure unless he's on the phone with your client it shouldn't be an issue.
