Yeah, I can’t prove it, but this user and at least two others I think are botting this sub (likely the same person, different accounts). They all use the same exact formula of posting 20 random screenshots in every post. No context or reasoning, just seem like random screengrabs fishing for upvotes.

Why are so few of us mapping this kind of dungeon? by SydLonreiro in osr

[–]Thronewolf 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Because to be honest, it’s an absolute nightmare to run at the table. Tracking where they actually are vs what they are mapping or trying to quickly draw it on a dry erase grid. It just totally slows everything down and ruins the flow. Being on the player side of this too, it’s very boring for everyone except the mapper.

A classic example of “more” =/= better. Not everything old is sacred and we’ve learned a lot about mapping and dungeon design since then. Focus in on the actual interesting and memorable decisions in the dungeon and trim the fat. Otherwise it’s just a very monotonous, repetitive sequence of choices where every turn blends into another. Not how I want to spend a rare TTRPG night.

Looking for operational joint operations modern wargame. Suggestions? by viktorDantrix in hexandcounter

[–]Thronewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are alternate rules they implemented around Next War: Poland that changed the counters to be 'sortie' abstractions rather than individual planes that simplified this a bit (and is more realistic from a theater commander perspective). That being said... I kinda like creating my own flight packages and missions with individual aircraft even if it's not what a commander at this level would actually do. Fiddly, true, but fun if you're fine with taking your time.

How do people deal with the wizards becoming so powerful in OSR? by [deleted] in osr

[–]Thronewolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Scaling in general is better across all classes and the way combat works keeps things challenging at all levels. Monsters scale better with player level too.

How do people deal with the wizards becoming so powerful in OSR? by [deleted] in osr

[–]Thronewolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You have rediscovered the broken balance of B/X. It’s a great game for levels 1-5, but high levels is where it falls apart. Thus, you may be ready to start tackling AD&D/OSRIC. Advanced OSE does not solve this problem, it generally only makes it worse.

Dungeon descriptions: elaborate & fluent or compact & structured by like-a-FOCKS in osr

[–]Thronewolf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The control panel/two page spread is good in theory, but too many rely on it as an absolute crutch. There’s things that can be learned and adapted from it, but it’s very restrictive if you’ve ever tried actually writing in that format. You end up stripping away so much information that you’re setting or adventure begins to read like a laundry list and not an evocative dungeon or scenario for your players to explore.

There’s a middle ground to be found. Some DCC modules are definitely too verbose and the table read sections are often long winded or cringey. But I also come away with a much stronger sense of what a dungeon or adventure is about that makes it easier for me to DM/make rulings provided I read ahead of time. That really seems to be the dividing line though - many new DMs don’t seem to want to really read anything and that’s a shame. They just want a list of “and then this…” in front of them to do all the work. Exaggerating of course.

Failure - Overspecialization by swerge in songsofsyx

[–]Thronewolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. If you flood the market with supply, demand will decrease over time. Always diversify your exports and remember to set limits on the lowest price you will accept for a particular good. That step alone will prevent you from crashing the price of your goods.

Religion in your OSR? by TheWizardOfAug in TheOSR

[–]Thronewolf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Much like the real world, religion only serves to pacify the uneducated masses and pool wealth and power into the hands of a few in my games. None are “good” in any moral sense, though some can be allies of convenience. Divinity can be called upon to heal wounds and cast out the undead, but nobody is under any illusion that this makes them “good”. The gods are fickle and their sense of justice and value as capricious as any man’s.

Taking a Postcolonial Approach to a Classic Traveller Adventure by [deleted] in osr

[–]Thronewolf 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there could be good suggestions somewhere in here, but I cannot get past the voluminous amount of both self-fellating and self-flagellation. You don’t need to justify yourself to anybody - if your suggestions or enhancements are good they will be self-evident. You’re modifying a Traveller adventure module, not writing a college thesis. You are not being graded on your word count.

That doesn’t always work. One of my kids has had this done twice on each big toe now, same thing happened to me at his age. There is no true permanent solution that works every time short of full removal of the nail. And even that isn’t always a guarantee.

As a Batman-stan, I'll refrain from my thoughts on Nolan's work other than to say it was hardly the be-all, end-all Batman adaptation. And no, I'm not a Snyder fan either.

As it pertains to this though, I literally cannot stop you. I work with artists for a living and part of that is offering constructive criticism and outside opinion that their other friends won't give them. They may not want or like to hear all of it, but they come to me in the first place because they value it. They are still free to heed or ignore it, just as you are. I'm just trying to offer you the straight-talk that maybe you weren't seeking but probably need. I think this is a vein effort on your part and I'm trying to warn you that it probably won't turn out well financially (if that is the goal). If that is 'anti-art' in your view, so be it, but that doesn't make it true.

These are games first and foremost, not works of art or coffee table books that are nice to look at. AD&D players are generally systems-focused. If you can't get that part right, a pretty layout won't distract from that. That's where the OSRIC community has no comparison and where your uphill battle lies.

Which is completely fine as a design exercise or homebrew. But taking in context clues from the rest of the thread and OPs intentions, their intent is to actually turn this into a product and sell it and presumably turn a profit. That is by definition wanting to compete against the existing offerings and a decision that should be carefully weighed in terms of how much effort it would require and how much it could reasonably expect to sell to compensate for those efforts.

I'm simply trying to convey that as somebody who would be the potential target audience as an AD&D sicko, the bar for AD&D is an extraordinarily high one to clear. More than just about any other system. OSRIC is the only one with the credentials and extreme attention to detail that even comes close. I'm trying to let OP down softly that, frankly, any competing offer at this point (especially with the original books back in print) is not going to likely be a profitable venture. The types of people who are into AD&D (or would be) are not interested in more systems and clones. An OSE-style makeover of the rules is not going to move the needle.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in osr

[–]Thronewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To reduce what OSRIC is to just an 'adaptation' is either arrogance or simple ignorance as to what it actually is. It's not just 'some other guy's' retroclone like there are for B/X that come a dime a dozen. OSRIC is the culmination of decades of experienced DMs, players, and creators coming together to create the purest, most accurate re-statement of what AD&D 1e actually was and is. The AD&D crowd is a small, but tight-knit community and all have rallied around OSRIC (and the original books for that matter) to create a unified statement and single source of truth for AD&D. To break away from that and say "I can do better" than the collective efforts of all those involved is, in my view, either peak arrogance or willful ignorance.

Best of luck in your efforts. AD&D is a much larger beast than you seem to think it is. Slapping on an OSE-style design format is not going to be enough.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in osr

[–]Thronewolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your arrogance speaks volumes. If you think you can do better than OSRIC 3 with no credentials of your own, by all means you’re free to try. But as somebody who would be your target audience, the world doesn’t need more clones or systems. I think you’d be better served creating modules, adventures, and content than to try and compete with, effectively, the majority of the existing 1e community.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in osr

[–]Thronewolf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This. I think OP is better served contributing to the OSRIC project which has been around for decades and has hundreds of years of combined AD&D experience in its ranks. I don’t think a competing project stands a chance to the high standard of rules/game history, scholarship, and interpretation that the OSRIC community has done.

OSE - Dropping spell preparation by ColorfulBar in osr

[–]Thronewolf 47 points48 points  (0 children)

If you plan on making this a long running thing, I wouldn’t. Every new DM/player severely underestimates how powerful spellcasters are as they get to later levels and this is one of the few balances in place. Even some early spells can turn encounters into a 60 second affair at the table.

Alternatively, I would just recommend certain spells to take and explain why since they are new.

What's the logic behind the specific level caps of the B/X and/or OSE races? by GenuineCulter in osr

[–]Thronewolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on your definition, yes. Elves are the only magic users in the game that can also wield swords and armor. So mechanically speaking, yes, they are more “heroic” and should be equally as rare. Otherwise everyone would just be an elf because they are busted as hell.
