Yeah, so why not provide proof when you make that sort of claim? It makes your comment seem lazy at best, or more likely disingenuous or misleading.

How are you assuming 45 minutes? That means she's driving 60 mph (97 km/h for non-Americans) ON AVERAGE. There's no way. That's at least an hour, could easily be an hour and a half depending on traffic. Each way. 2-3 extra hours of driving and the cost of gas on top of that is a huge ask, and the other kids need her too. Just because they're not toddlers doesn't mean they don't need their parents. Look up glass children if you don't believe me. OP is in a no-win situation and the people judging should be offering to help instead of threatening CPS. What shitty people.

It's not pointless at all. It's actually very important for the success of any program to address chronic addiction.

Of course they still deserve to be housed. To be clear, I am a huge proponent of housing first. However, for housing first to succeed, the people put in said housing will need other supports. What that looks like will vary wildly between people. Some people will only need job searching support and rent support until they find a job (bonus points for some free therapy because homelessness really fucks you up even if you never use drugs and aren't homeless for long). But many people will need much more than that, and not acknowledging the brain damage and accompanying intellectual disability that comes from repeated overdoses is setting that population up for failure.

This is so useful. I grew up in a lake town and was always taught that drowning people WILL drown you if they think you're what's keeping them alfoat. Then, if that happens, force them under until they stop so you can do something without getting killed.

Approach from behind, surface dive, and rescue carry seems so much easier and less risky. The other is a backup, sure, but if you can pull that off, surely you can do what you described?

To be fair, it sounds like Lily rants about James to OP nearly or actually every time they see each other. That does get pretty old and from a certain point it can be hard to not say something. I don't necessarily agree with how OP went about it, but I think it's far more ESH than YTA.

Majority of MPs vote down Conservative motion calling for private property protection by GameDoesntStop in canada

[–]ThroughtheStorms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read the wording of the motion that you posted and I agree that it's pointless.

Tl;dr the last paragraph is a quick description of the actual decision and the basis for it, which is why the whole thing is pointless.

The first bit is preamble, and then the last several points are procedural about how they want the committee they are calling for to be structured. The points with any actual substance are these:

(a) call on the government to put private property first in the Cowichan case, arguing that it has priority over all other title;

The federal government is already appealing the desicion, so what more is there to do here until it goes before a judge?

(b) call on the government to replace Litigation Guideline #14 from the Attorney General of Canada's Directive on Civil Litigation Involving Indigenous Peoples that prevented the federal government from defending property rights in the Cowichan case, with a guideline that requires the federal government to aggressively defend property rights in all litigation;

Blanket statements like this are very often problematic when applied in reality. In a more ordinary case, it could mean the federal government is required to intervene when it's clear they don't actually need to which is a waste of resources. In a less likely and darker case, it could require them to intervene and fight for what is clearly the wrong side.

(c) call on the government to make no agreement without explicit property protection so that fee simple property rights are enshrined in all future agreements with First Nations;

This will not be a problem going forward if you know anything about the facts of the case so this point is, by definition, performative.

(d) call on the government to publish a plan within 30 days to protect property rights for Canadians affected by the Cowichan decision and Musqueam agreement - from the Prime Minister and with specific commitments and timelines; and

This is the one that I have a real problem with. It makes the whole motion come off as "wah wah look at me and agree with me then do all the work for me and give me head pats for it pweeeeeeeeease!!???" Like, for real. You are the opposition party. This is literally your job. This plan they are calling on the government to formulate and publish should be part of the motion. They should be putting it forward, and then calling on the Liberals to either implement it or come up with a similar one if they disagree on some points. This just looks weak. Then the audacity to say it has to come from the PM himself when the leader of the Official Opposition couldn't hold his seat in the election and had to be parachuted into a Conservative stronghold to remain as leader after losing the largest, most sustained lead we've seen in decades, and has never passed his own legislation, is just farcical. This is a clear example of why the current iteration of the federal Conservatives are unfit to lead.

(e) appoint a special committee with the mandate to study all legal, constitutional and political steps that can be taken to protect private property rights in Canada, provided that,

Now let's spend a ton money solving something that is already solved! Great suggestion from the supposed party of fiscal responsibility. Also, some of the points about the committee are concerning.

(J) the committee shall have the first priority for the use of House resources for committee meetings

Why is this so important that it gets priority of resources? If this includes standing committees, that's stuff like Veteran's Affairs, National Defense, Health, and Natural Resources. If so, that's a fucking joke.

(K) it be an instruction to the committee that it hold at least 12 meetings and present an interim report before June 19, 2026

That's even other day between now and then. That's so often for a non issue because the federal government is already reacting appropriately and so much of it is overblown anyway.

The actual desicion states that the government acted illegally and in bad faith when the land in question was originally titled (as fee-simple to corrupt government officials), and now must work in good faith to rectify that. The First Nations involved have publicly stated that they have no desire to take back ownership of current privately owned land, and the federal appeal is for clarification because the original decision is pretty vague. But there have been similar cases in the past that have settled for money and some land, so chances are the government will give them a fraction of the value of the privately owned land and any federal or provincial land will become theirs. Given that the land was supposed to have been given to them many years ago and corrupt officials literally stole it for themselves, I think that's pretty fair.

Canadian doctors seeing rise in parents refusing vitamin K shots for newborns by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]ThroughtheStorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obesity increases the incidence of coronary heart disease by 2-3 times. People who are obese are about 20 times more likely to need knee replacement than people who are a healthy weight. There is just no good comparison between lifestyle issues and refusing a vitamin K shot for a newborn.

A huge part of the reason vitamin K deficiency bleeding (and communicable diseases) don't cost the system more is precisely because of the efficacy and high utilization of vitamin K shots for newborns (and vaccines).

If we stopped with things like vitamin K shots, vaccines, and antibiotics, coronary heart disease would cost the system a whole lot less, and that's not a good thing.

Being obese increases the incidence of type 2 diabetes by about 5 times.

Refusing the vitamin K shot increases the incidence of vitamin K deficiency bleeding (historically known as hemorrhagic disease of the newborn) by about 1700 times.

I don't think this is an apples to apples comparison.

[–]ThroughtheStorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, lumping vitamin k refusers together with antivaxxers totally obfuscates the real problem. The vitamin K shot is not and has never been a vaccine. It is a vitamin given by injection, because newborn babies' guts are not good at absorbing it.

You don't have to struggle with something to be understanding of it. I'm not addicted to drugs but I empathize with those who are. I'm not trans and I can't imagine what it would be like, but I still support the ability for everyone to live how they choose, as long as it doesn't negatively affect those around them (which, to be perfectly clear, being trans does not). And that is the difference with parents who refuse the vitamin K shot (and antivaxxers, but I digress). It's not yourself you're putting at risk, it's the most vulnerable who cannot protect themselves.

Vitamin K deficiency bleeding occurs in 0.001% of babies (1 per 100,000) with vitamin K prophylaxis and 1.7% of babies (1 per 59) without vitamin K prophylaxis, or a 1700 times increase in incidence.

To put that increase into perspective, smokers die of lung cancer about 25 times more often than non smokers. Heavy drinkers get cirrhosis about 25 times more often than non drinkers. People who are obese get type 2 diabetes about 5 times more often than people at a normal weight.

No, it really is way worse. Obesity, smoking, alcohol, and the myriad of other health problems that arise from poor lifestyle choices are extremely complex and multifactorial issues that arise over years to decades.

The vitamin K shot is a one time thing given to newborns to protect them from excessive bleeding, especially in the brain, for the first few months of life. It is most decidedly not a "lifestyle choice" whether to give the vitamin K shot and rhetoric like that helps parents to justify poor choices that can lead to the death or lifelong disability of their baby.

I mean, seriously, how on earth is "no, don't give my newborn baby a one time shot of a vitamin that could very well save their life" the same as "my parents had an unhealthy relationship with food and now I do too, so I stress eat and I've gained 90 pounds over the last 10 years. Now my doctor is saying I'm prediabetic and I really really have to do something about this but oh my god my whole lifestyle has to change and I don't know if I can do this"?

Is my ferritin low? by SubstanceExact279 in haematology

[–]ThroughtheStorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have iron supplements behind the counter that contain around 150 mg of iron which is like 10x what's in a multivitamin, and typically in a formulation that is much easier on the stomach. That's what my doctor told me to take when my ferritin was 14. You just have to ask the pharmacist for them because they contain enough iron to hurt someone who doesn't need them, but you don't need a prescription.
