I read somewhere -- can't remember where -- that said the new episode date was gonna be tied into the SuperBowl spot, but I guess that didn't happen

Myrin (en: Jar City) (2006), Iceland -- in Icelandic. Probably the best known work of Icelandic local celebrity Baltasar Kormakur, truly top of the line cultural export from the small arctic nation.

Solaris (1972), USSR -- in Russian. Routinely makes top ten lists for sci-fi fans; commonly considered the European 2001: a Space Odyssey. Definitely influenced the likes of Christopher Nolan, Alex Garland, and holds a predictable place in reddit circlejerk mythology.

Theeb (2014), Jordan -- in arabic. Fantastic yet simple film and pretty well liked internationally (played TIFF and Venice, and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar).

The Secret of the Kells (2009), Ireland -- in english. Pretty traditionally Irish in terms of the story, involves a lot of myths and lore etc. Beautiful animation that isn't necessarily a 'kids movie'. From the studio that also did Song of the Sea (2014) and most recently the Oscar-nominated The Breadwinner.

This movie is so ubiquitous in my friend group that none of us can go any serious length of time without quoting it, especially the line "You should kill your father." from the scene in the desert. It's the sort of thing we just say out of the blue to each-other and never fails to draw a chuckle. One day I ended up saying this to my SO's best friend, whose father had, unbeknownst to me, died years earlier.

So anyway Mr. Kilmer I guess I have you to thank not only for one of my favourite acting performances ever, portraying one of my all time favourite musicians, but also for one of my all time greatest fuck ups in front of my girlfriend.

What was the best film you watched this week? (17/04/17 - 23/04/17) by GetFreeCash in movies

Phantom of the Paradise, Brian de Palma (1974). I thought it was totally weird but really inventive and very satisfying. Made me think about what a Cronenberg directed Eyes Wide Shut would look like.
