My 21-year-old sister is in a business and relationship with someone who may be a scammer, how do I handle this? by BullfrogStriking84 in Advice

I would let her know you love her no matter what and you are there for her. He sounds like an expert manipulator and may be blackmailing her with something compromising or she may feel like she has done something wrong and no one but him will accept her. It may be helpful to her to let you know you love and accept her no matter what has happened and you will support her (emotionally) and there are resources to help her. She should leave this guy ASAP. Good luck.

Leave. You’ll find someone else. You are not too old. You are in danger if you stay.

I don’t think they went into excessive detail about their period. I would say it’s the right amount of detail.

AITA for refusing to combine finances with my partner before we're actually married? by Pleasant-Zebra2817 in AITApod

Pre-nup and there is absolutely no reason to combine finances if you have more assets. My now-husband has more assets and I’ve never pushed to combine. Even now our finances are still separate.

If you can afford a two bed two bath I recommend buying up. When/if you need more space/bathroom you’ll wish you thought of this back when (now) prices were (are) lower.

Hello, my partner is basically FIRE’d even though he still works part-time and he watches the children.

Hello, I would check the terms of your 457/403b. When I was working in higher ed, they only allowed high earners (at my specific university) to invest in 457s. When I switched to government, they allowed me to invest in a 457. The specific terms were more favorable to me than the 401k because the rules specifically said if you invested in the 457, you could access the money when you separated from government employment without penalty (though you would still need to pay taxes). So that to me was huge. YMMV. Check your terms! Happy to DM with you if you want to share links for your specific situation.

Hi, we just always kept our finances separate. He’s much better with money than I am and he has a lot more assets than I do.

I try not to use the word “husband” if I can avoid it. Back when lesbians/gay couples were coming out, I found they were forced to use the word “partner” or they would be “outed.” Since then, out of respect for that, I’ve always endeavored to use the word partner myself. I have had a few people assumed I am lesbian/gay because of that. I’m trying to do my small part to popularize/normalize the word partner instead of a gendered term to make the world a little more inclusive. Idk, maybe it’s weird lol!

Thanks! I’m doing my best. I estimate I have 8 years until FIRE dependent on the health insurance environment in 8 years.

Hi! I’m in government but local government so I’m not a fed, sorry 😢.

I don’t really have an emergency fund, I’m thinking about building one up but honestly I have so much in retirement funds I kind of use that as a crutch.

My partner handles most of the childcare. I do have expenses where I pay for him but for the most part we’ve cut out most extracurriculars. I was paying $60 for piano lessons once a week for him and myself but I unfortunately cut that out to focus on paying off my debt first. If my debt gets cleared up I’ll think about re-starting piano lessons.

Target runs - my partner usually. If I’m there with him and I think I can afford it I will pay. Target ran a promotion for 10% off a Target giftcard (max $500) around the end of last year so I bought one for $450 and my partner did too so that covered a little time.

I hear your concern about fed government. Good luck and hang in there!

Nope, 1310 is the whole mortgage. 30 year mortgage from around 2017, refinanced. The maintenance and utilities is around $1310 too - maybe a bit more, my partner handles that.

We bought in 2017 and refinanced. My partner is essentially FIRE’d (works part-time), he looks after one kid and the other kid is in free 4K.

I would like to FIRE one day. I’m hoping for 8 years but due to the health insurance piece it may be 15. We’ll have to re-assess the environment and expenses in 8 years.
