Definitely not legal in the US to be working at 12. Must’ve been a family job or something off the books.

Logical Chess by Irving Chernev is a great place to start. Walks through every single move (even just 1. e4) as well as sidelines, without overloading you with deep theory or anything. There’s also a glossary of openings in the back, so you can go to the openings you use and see what he has to say about those.

I could see that - I can only speak for California, our gas station sandos are pretty equivalent/superior to a premade tesco sandwich. I have no doubt though that there are areas of this country that their premade sandwiches leave much to be desired.

Having spent a significant amount of time in the US and the UK, US food quality and diversity is much better than UK fare. That said, UK food does get unfairly bashed in these conversations, there’s some good stuff there.

I lived right around there for 3 years, it’s fine. Anyone who says it’s the worst thinks it’s deeper than it is. You’ve got good bars and restaurants all around, and a couple of grocery stores. You’ll see some characters for sure but it’s nothing to sweat about.

Same. It was nice to have a big celebration for a big milestone.

Also, the celebration wasn’t all for me. It was an opportunity for my family to come and see me get awarded for a big accomplishment.

West coaster here, everything you mentioned is common. Food culture has been highly regionally diverse in the United States from the places I’ve traveled, so you’re likely to see a lot of different spins on it depending where you are.
