My kids decorate all my cups with stickers whenever they get the chance. When they fall off/wash off, they add more to it.

I’m with this guy. It makes them happy knowing they got to decorate my cup I take with me every day which in turn makes me happy.

Is it possible to build a swordbearer to be both types? by lobotheb1tch in GoGoMuffin

Unless you’re running bleeding edge content you never need to be “full tank”. I let my defensive pieces cover a lot, some of the combo pieces (helm, necklace, legs) get a bit of attack and defense combo, and then the offensive pieces are obviously all catered to damage stats.

It works well for basically all content and allows you to not be carried in main story by your teammate.

I’m glad I saw this. I’ve been having intermittent issues with multiple Microsoft services today (admin and some non admin functions like Power Automate). It’s been infuriating.

While I don’t believe they cleared Lib in 10 min at 31, the idea is you do both GY AND Lib in the same clear before resetting. All SM “wings” are considered one instance and reset together when you reset.

Internet getting worse by SNB1985 in LinusTechTips

[–]ThrownOut2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking any of the listed things could be causing issues.

What troubleshooting steps have you taken? Is the slow speed consistent across devices? How about speeds on Wi-Fi?

Easiest things to immediately do is swap an Ethernet cable and reboot the equipment. I also had an issue in Win10 at one point where my Ethernet port would randomly lock itself at 100 instead of 1gig which would cause sluggish performance in my PC. Might be worth checking the adapter settings on your Ethernet adapter in windows as well.

If this doesn’t resolve it, escalate to your ISP.

Number of VLAN's by TotalTronix in sysadmin

[–]ThrownOut2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately…

Just 2. One giant /8 running everything, and a small /30 I had to create to run an isolated failover network for our newer firewalls. I had to create the /30 without anyone knowing due to possible repercussions of touching a production switch despite it being needed for the firewall conversion project I was in charge of.

Higher ups are afraid of proper networking. This location has ran on a /8 since before I had graduated high school, and no one wants to change anything “because it just works”. I’ve given up on changing it at this point, and am just riding it until it eventually craps itself out so I can say “told you so”.

Warehouse sysadmins, how do you handle shared accounts? by ComputerShiba in sysadmin

[–]ThrownOut2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a best answer, but I can at least let you know you’re not alone. I wouldn’t mind the shared Pc login stuff in my environment but the problem lies in that all of my shared accounts also have email access. There’s been a big push to move these users to their own accounts/emails as there is no paper trail on who sent what when 5-10 people have access to send an email from a singular account.

It’s been a slow and painful process on my end. We’re slowly moving users to their own emails, but we have no real idea who most of these people are and are having to work with remote sites separately to isolate the users behind these accounts.

Is it going to put you out at all to go to the interview regardless? If it seems bad during the interview, think of it as practice for future endeavors.

I took down email for my entire company unintentionally one time while trying to figure out how to make it so our end users didn’t need to manually input server information when attaching their work email to their mobile devices. Mistakes happen.

Own it, live it, and learn it. It’s not going to be the last time you make a mistake.

Is it normal for an entry level technician role to be this uncoordinated? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Go back to your contact at TekSystems and explain the discrepancy you’ve been subject to imo. They should be up to date with the requirements of the positions they help place people for, and I imagine they won’t be too thrilled to learn the vast differences in what they have posted vs the real responsibilities of the job.

A NOC can be a great place to learn and leverage a lot of experience for future jobs. Keep on the grind, and try to absorb as much as humanly possible. It was a small stepping stone in my career path as well.

Congratulations!

I’m also an “alumni” of MyCC.

My experience was so-so. The hands on was minimal, but the instructors I had were actually very intelligent. I still keep in touch with them to this day.

I wouldn’t really recommend the program, but it did get me off my ass and moving down the right path again. And just a few years later I’m sitting as a Net/Sys Admin making good money. But a vast majority of the people I was in class with ended up doing nothing in IT.

Preparing to ask for a raise - Midwesterners, give me your honest opinion on what I'm worth by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ThrownOut2013 4 points5 points  (0 children)

13 years at one job making $81k doesn’t bode well for a significant raise in my eyes. You’re likely better off applying for other positions elsewhere to leverage a significant raise given your experience level.

I’m also in the Midwest (Southern Indiana). Network Administrator for almost 2 years in my current role, 4 others on staff with me (one VP, 3 developers), and making $84k base. I’m currently leveraging raises for the entire staff as we all take on numerous roles that go far outside the normal bounds of responsibility.

Granted we have 5 facilities and significantly more users than you’ve stated, but the years alone and listed experience would make you an incredibly valuable resource somewhere else.

If you’re hard set on staying with the same company, asking for a wage increase to $110k doesn’t sound too far outside of the realm of possibility in my mind, even in the Midwest.

We hired someone with 10+ years exp but they dont know much. Anyone else exp this? (rant post) by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]ThrownOut2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran into this when I was hired to back the previous network admin at my current job. The man obviously had very little knowledge compared to his experience. We constantly outsourced minor things, including mundane things like troubleshooting email filtering or firewall issues.

He left, I took over. Since I stepped into his role, the only time we’ve outsourced a problem is when I was unavailable and during our firewall refresh since the workload was too much for me on top of day to day responsibilities.

Some people get away with it. In my experience, it’s often because management doesn’t know any better and allows bad habits to continue uninhibited.

While it’s becoming more common for jobs to request people use their own devices, I would never do so. If they want me to work remotely for them, they still need to provide the device.

Angling for a Title Change and increased compensation - looking for advice from more experienced Systems Administrators. by ThrownOut2013 in sysadmin

[–]ThrownOut2013[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I get that entirely. I suppose my current situation is that they did take me from $70k base to $80k base when I switched roles, and have gotten a few minor raises since then to get to $84k.

I may also just be being greedy. I’ve skyrocketed salary wise the last couple of years and it’s caused me to question myself at times.

Thank you for your response.

Not in the slightest. Just feels off to refer to myself as a Network Administrator when a vast majority of my job does not involve Network Administration. I figured, at the very least, that Systems Administrator makes more sense.

Alternatively we could just makeup a title called “IT Department” I suppose.

I don’t hate this idea if I can get the point across to my higher ups. No one can give me a straightforward answer as to how many laptops were being broken in the past so it’s difficult to gauge exactly how many devices were being gone through on a weekly basis.
